COMMISSIONED REPORT Summary Seagrass (Zostera) beds in Orkney Commissioned Report No. 765 Project No: 848 Contractors: Emma Jackson (The Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom) and Malcolm Thomson (Sula Diving) Year of publication: 2014 Keywords Seagrass; Zostera marina; Orkney; predictive model; survey. Background Seagrasses (Zostera spp) are marine flowering plants that develop on sands and muds in sheltered intertidal and shallow subtidal areas. Seagrass beds are important marine habitats but are vulnerable to a range of human induced pressures. Their vulnerability and importance to habitat creation and ecological functioning is recognised in their inclusion on the recommended Priority Marine Features list for Scotland’s seas. Prior to this study, there were few confirmed records of Zostera in Orkney waters. This study combined a predictive modelling approach with boat-based surveys to enhance under- standing of seagrass distribution in Orkney and inform conservation management. -

The Coen types, now at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, have been examined; most of them are holotypes or lectotypes. Some lectotypes were already selected by van Aartsen, as stated in the label, therefore we have not done any further selection of types. The new pyramidellid species have been practically identified and named by Monterosato, and were all found in shell grit collected on the beach of Lido (a small island in front of Venice). ^^ FIELDIANA • ZOOLOGY 3 Published by CHICAGO NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Volume 39 October 17, 1958 No. 20 MARINE MOLLUSKS FROM BOUGAINVILLE AND FLORIDA, SOLOMON ISLANDS Alan Solem Assistant Curator, Division of Lower Invertebrates My checklist of the Solomon Island marine and fresh-water mol- lusks (Solem, 1953) was based on a large collection donated to Chicago Natural History Museum by Captain J. M. Ross and sup- plemented by a series of records in the literature. Two small collec- tions of marine shells given to the University of Michigan Museum of Zoology add to our knowledge of the fauna, and the additional data are reported below. I did not communicate with Dr. C. E. Fox, who presented the shells to Captain Ross, until after the checklist had been published. Dr. Fox then informed me that all the shells he gave to Captain Ross were found near Guadalcanal and Malaita Islands. The local- ity "Solomon Islands" cited by me (Solem, 1953) for the Fox col- lection should be restricted to "Guadalcanal and Malaita." Since September, 1952, when my manuscript (Solem, 1953) was submitted, the checklist of Kuroda and Habe (1952), the semi-pop- ular book of Kira (1955), and the ecological study of Demond (1957) have brought to my attention a number of nomenclatural changes affecting the names used by me (Solem, 1953) . These changes in no way alter the taxonomic position of the genera and species—only the names applied to the units. Both below, and in a report on the New Hebridean marine fauna (Solem, in press), a number of nomen- clatural changes are recorded. -

Review known spawning areas for pelagic and invertebrate species, with the aim of evaluating these sites as candidate spawning refugia. 2. Evaluate each of the project’s habitat demonstration sites as potential juvenile/pre-recruit refugia for significant demersal species. Rationale for the Two-Track Approach to the Identification of Fisheries Refugia The two main life history events for fished species are reproduction and recruitment. It was noted by the RSTC that both of these events involve movement between areas, and some species, often pelagic fishes, migrate to particular spawning areas. It was also noted that many species also utilise specific coastal habitats such as coral reefs, seagrass, and mangroves as nursery areas. In terms of the effects of fishing, most populations of fished species are particularly vulnerable to the impacts of high levels of fishing effort in areas and at times where there are high abundances of (a) stock in spawning condition, (b) juveniles and pre-recruits, or (c) pre-recruits migrating to fishing grounds. -

Spixiana 38 (1): 3-10. 14 species of the genus Turbo are known from the Western Indian Ocean. These species are assigned to 5 subgenera. A new species of the subgenus Aspilaturbo Williams, 2008 was found on the remote islands of Saint Brandon (Cargados Cara- jos Islands). This species is described here as new and compared to the similar- looking species Turbo radiatus Gmelin, 1791 and Turbo tuberculosus Quoy & Gaimard, 1834 and to the two other species of the subgenus, Turbo jonathani Dekker, Moolenbeek & Dance, 1992 and Turbo marisrubri Kreipl & Alf, 2001. To predict the potential responses of a broadcast-spawning life history such as that of M. arenaria,I surveyed the literature on a variety of bivalve species. By incorporating information on growth, survival, and reproduction into matrix population models I could evaluate the relative contributions of these factors to fitness. For broadcast- spawners, long life is an important factor enabling them to gamble on rare, large recruitment events.
