Brentnall Introduction Augustine of Hippo (354-430), the great ‘Church Father’ from whose writings Luther and Calvin contributed so much to the Reformation, “never wrote what could be called a treatise on prayer.” (Thomas Hand) His nearest approach to an extended treatment of the subject - a letter to a wealthy noble widow who had sought his advice - merely delineates the kind of people we must be in order to pray acceptably, and develops a few valuable suggestions on prayer that are useful for the Christian’s journey towards the full enjoyment of God. His Expositions on the Psalms, though not specifically a study of prayer, throw much light on how Christ and His Church express their union and communion through prayer, and how believers may make the psalmists’ prayers their own. The Confessions weave in and out of prayer so much that they may be justly regarded as one prolonged prayer; yet they offer no direct teaching on the subject. For their part, the Sermons, Soliloquies, Treatises, Letters and Retractations cast up many valuable thoughts on prayer, not to mention some priceless gems in the form of particular prayers offered to God by Augustine himself; but they too offer no systematic treatment. In view of this absence, perhaps the most we can distill from the vast and varied array of available material is “not a system or method” of prayer, but “a general orientation with recurrent themes and characteristic emphases.” (Rebecca Weaver) What we can distill, however, may well revolutionize our whole view and practice of prayer. -

R. Orage has said "Faith, Hope and Love are the growing ends of essence."1 I am interesting in knowing Faith, Love, and Hope. The mathematician Herman Weyl said: The astonishing thing is not that there exist natural laws, but that the further the analysis proceeds, the finer the details, the finer the elements to which the phenomena are reduced, the simpler—and not the more complicated, as one would originally expect—the fundamental relations become and the more exactly do they describe the actual occurrences. - Hermann Weyl, The Open World, Three Lectures on the Metaphysical Implications of Science, 1932, pp. 40-42. Taking the lead from Weyl, I resist temptation to complicate instead of simplifying, my aim, to "know so that not even a thought comes between [me] and what [I] know" of Faith, Love, and Hope. So I will not discuss with others or with myself the various rich connections between this topic, and the topic of the three centers. -

Doctrine and Beliefs: Trinity: God eternally exists as three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. The three distinct persons of the Trinity are all fully God; all of God’s attributes are true of each person and together they are one God. While the word “trinity” never appears in Scripture, it is an accepted doctrine based on the Bible’s teachings as a whole. We see throughout Scripture, evidence of the Trinity (Matthew 3:16-17, Matthew 28:19, John 1:1-5, John 13:20, 1 Corinthians 12:4-6, 2 Corinthians 13:14, Ephesians 2:18, 1 Peter 1:2). Additional Supportive Scripture: John 1:14, John 10:30, John 14 16-17, John 14:26, John 15:26, 1 Corinthians 8:6, Ephesians 4:4-6, Philippians 2:5-8, Colossians 1:15-17, Colossians 2:9-10, 1 John 5:7-8 God the Father: The first member of the Trinity is God the Father. He is the Creator and Sustainer of all things (Genesis 1:1, Colossians 1:16, Acts 4:24, Hebrews 1:3, Revelation 4:11). God is sovereign and infinite, meaning He has no limitations. God the Father can be intimately known but because of His infiniteness, He can never be fully known (Psalm 145:3, Jeremiah 9:23-24, Romans 11:33). God the Father can only be known through Jesus (Matthew 11:27, John 14:6). Jesus Christ: Jesus is the second member of the Trinity and the Son of God. He is God incarnate as man, and He is both fully God and fully human (Luke 24:39, John 1:1, John 1:18, Romans 9:5, Colossians 1:19, Colossians 2:9). -

Voices of Eternal Spring: A study of the Hingcun diau Song Family and Other Folk Songs of the Hingcun Area, Taiwan Submitted for PhD By Chien Shang-Jen Department of Music University of Sheffield January 2009 Chapter Four The Developmental Process and Historical Background of Hingcun Diau and Its Song Family Introduction The previous three chapters of this thesis detailed the three major systems of Taiwanese folksongs - Aboriginal, Holo and Hakka. Concentrating on the area of Hingcun, one of the primary cradles of Holo folksongs, these three chapters also explored how the geographical conditions, natural landscape, and historical and cultural background of the area influence local folksongs and what the mutual relations between these factors and the local folksongs are. Furthermore, the three chapters studied in depth not only the background, characteristics and cultural influences of each of the Hingcun folk songs but also local prominent folksong figures, major accompanying musical instruments, musical activities and so on. Chapter Four narrows the focus specifically to Hingcun diau and its song family. In this chapter, on the one hand, I examine carefully the changes in Hingcun diau and its song family activated from within a culture; on the other hand, I also pay attention to the changes in these songs caused by their contact with other cultures.1 In other words, in addition to a careful study of the origin, developmental process and historical background of Hingcun diau and its song family, I shall also dissect how the interaction of different ethnic groups, languages used in the area, political and economic factors, and various local cultures influence Hingcun diau and its song family, and what the mutual relations between the former factors and Hingcun diau and its song family are. -

Sermon for Sunday, October 4, 2020 - “Hope and Humility’ Eighteenth Sunday after Pentecost Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Decorah, Iowa Rev. Amy Zalk Larson Click here to read scripture passages for the day. Beloved of God grace to you and peace in the name of Jesus. This week, my husband Matt and I got to have a physically distanced gathering with some friends from Oregon who have a family home in Decorah. Since they were coming to our porch, I brought out some wine to serve them; but it was nowhere near as good as the amazing wine from Oregon they brought over. The gift of good friends, good wine and good conversation was so nurturing to me this week. That time and our readings today also got me thinking about what brings about good grapes and good wine both literally and metaphorically. Both our first reading and our Gospel reading today consider that question and bring us into vineyards. In Isaiah we hear God’s people described as a vineyard. God plants and tends and nurtures and provides for the vineyard. God expects it to bear good fruit, the good grapes of justice and righteousness. Yet, instead of an abundant and pleasant harvest, God sees the wild grapes of violence, arrogance and bloodshed. Jesus tells a parable about tenants in God’s vineyard. They begin to think that they are entitled to all that the vineyard pro- duces, that they can do whatever they want with it. They become greedy, arrogant, violent. These readings hit awfully close to home these days. -

Psalm 139:13–16 indicates that our very genetic structure is in the hands of God. Each of us must accept himself and be himself.”1 1. The Power Of Jesus v. 7 a. The demand for His power v. 7a “‘Earthen’ or ‘clay’ jars, as opposed to bronze ones, were readily discarded; because clay was always available, such containers were cheap and disposable if they were broken or incurred ceremonial impurity—an odd container for a rich treasure.”2 “Such vessels were regarded as fragile and as expendable because they were cheap and often unattractive.”3 “We are but earthen jars used of God for his purposes (Rom. 9:20ff.) and so fragile.”4 “The idea of light in earthen vessels is, however, best illustrated in the story of the lamps and pitchers of Gideon, Judges 7:16. Jesus, Divine Light 2 Corinthians 4:3-6 by Michael G. Lilienthal Enlightened souls, Have you ever wondered, “Why the Gospel?” Why do we preach it? Why use God’s Word? Paul says, before our text today, “We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God’s Word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone’s conscience in the sight of God” (2 Cor. 4:2). But why? There are certainly easier ways to convince people to join our church. Sometimes the Bible is just complicated. And then, there are times, too, when the Gospel just doesn’t seem to cut it. There are problems in the world! They’re not being fixed by the church! Can’t we leave the Gospel behind for a moment, and go give motivational speeches to convince people in the world just to love one another? If we focused our efforts, couldn’t we accomplish a change? Why don’t we give the Gospel a break—because we all know that we’re saved already—and actually do something? Today is the feast of the Transfiguration. As our Gospel records for us, Jesus stood on a mountaintop with three of his disciples, and there “the appearance of his face was altered, and his clothing became dazzling white” (Luke 9:29). This light shining from him came with purpose, for God there announced what he intended to do with Jesus, saying, “This is my Son, my Chosen One; listen to him!” (9:35). Learn today, I urge you, about Jesus, the divine light of knowledge and life, who is given into the hands of men. -

Accepting God’s Grace • Lesson 11 Bible Point If we believe in Jesus, we’ll receive eternal life. Bible Verse “For God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Growing Closer to Jesus Students will n experience what it’s like to receive grace—unmerited kindness; n discover how it feels to be helpless to save themselves; n learn that God’s gift of salvation is offered to everyone; and n discover that Jesus offers something to them—eternal life—that they could never win on their own. Teacher Enrichment Bible Basis n Accepting God’s Grace This passage is one of the most remarkable explanations of God’s plan of Romans salvation found anywhere in the Bible. It’s easy to begin to think that God 5:6-9 sent Jesus to die for the good people who have accepted him. But this passage makes it clear that Jesus died for the ungodly—people who are living their lives in blatant sin. People who are like we were before we became Christians—and worse! Every once in a while you hear of someone intentionally giving his or her own life to save someone else. Usually it’s a mother dying to save a baby or a brother dying to save a sister. But you seldom hear of people intentionally giving up their lives for someone they don’t know—or for someone known to be evil.
