The first results of a study of the circumnuclear star-forming regions in HST broad band images of the nearby galaxy NGC4314 are presented. After modeling the bulge stellar population using ellipse fitting and subtracting the resulting model from the original images, aperture photometry of the individual star-forming regions in the ring was per- formed. For a total of 75 regions detected 3a above the background, we obtained mean colors (f439-f569) == -0.72 ± 0.27, and (f569-f814) == -0.69 ± 0.35, with the NW regions being rv 0.5 mag bluer in both colors than the NE ones, an effect that may be caused by internal reddening. 1. Mpc- , D==9.7 - 13.4 Mpc depend- ing on the distance assumed to the Coma I Cloud) SBa galaxy with a LINER nucleus and a broken ring of star forming regions with radius rv 8". We have used HST /WFPC2 archival images in the F439W, F569W and F814W filters to analyze both the bulge and ring stellar content. The images have been corrected for Galactic reddening assuming E(B-V) == 0.025. -

ABSTRACT We present new central stellar velocity dispersion measurements for 428 galaxies in the Palomar spectroscopic survey of bright, northern galaxies. Of these, 142 have no previously published measurements, most being rela- −1 tively late-type systems with low velocity dispersions (∼<100kms ). We provide updates to a number of literature dispersions with large uncertainties. Our measurements are based on a direct pixel-fitting technique that can ac- commodate composite stellar populations by calculating an optimal linear combination of input stellar templates. The original Palomar survey data were taken under conditions that are not ideally suited for deriving stellar veloc- ity dispersions for galaxies with a wide range of Hubble types. We describe an effective strategy to circumvent this complication and demonstrate that we can still obtain reliable velocity dispersions for this sample of well-studied nearby galaxies. We propose to observe the mid−infrared emission of the outer disks of a carefully selected sample of nearby galaxies for which extensive ancillary data are available, including deep ultraviolet, broadband optical, and H−alpha narrow band imaging. Our observations aim at fully characterizing the nature of the recently−discovered extended ultraviolet disks, by probing the evolved stellar populations in those extreme locales. The ultraviolet−to− mid−infrared spectral energy distributions of the outer regions will provide their star formation histories and stellar masses, which we will compare with extant models of galaxy formation, including inside−out and accretion. This project provides a systematic approach to the investigation of outer disk regions, and greatly extends over previous similar programs, which have provided only a piecemeal view of such regions. -

This × population reaches a maximum 2{10 keV luminosity of 4 1040 erg s−1, ∼ × attained at the end of the star formation episode, and sustained for a pe- riod of several hundreds of Myr by succeeding populations of XRBs with lighter companion stars. An important property of these results is the min- imal dependence on poorly-constrained values of the initial mass function (IMF) and the average mass ratio between accreting and donating stars in XRBs. The peak X-ray luminosity is shown to be consistent with recent observationally-motivated correlations between the star formation rate and total hard (2{10 keV) X-ray luminosity. -

This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract We have analyzed the frequency and properties of the nuclear activity in a sample of galaxies with circumnuclear rings and spirals (CNRs), compiled from published data. From the properties of this sample a typical circumnuclear ring can be characterized as having a median radius of 0.7 kpc (mean 0.8 kpc, rms 0.4 kpc), located at a spiral Sa/Sb galaxy (75% of the hosts), with a bar (44% weak, 37% strong bars). The sample includes 73 emission line rings, 12 dust rings and 9 stellar rings. The sample was compared with a carefully matched control sample of galaxies with very similar global properties but without detected circumnuclear rings. We discuss the relevance of the results in regard to the AGN feeding processes and present the following results: 1) bright companion galaxies seem -

(1999, Rev. Mex. Astron. Astrofis., 35, 187) and representative of the population of bright LINER sources. The nuclear X-ray morphology has been classified by their nuclear compactness in the hard band (4.5– 8.0 keV) into 2 categories: active galactic nuclei (AGN) candidates (with a clearly identified unresolved nuclear source) and starburst (SB) candidates (without a clear nuclear source). Sixty percent of the total sample are classified as AGNs, with a median luminosity 40 −1 of LX(2−10 keV) = 2.5 × 10 erg s , which is an order of magnitude higher than for SB-like nuclei. The spectral fitting allows us to conclude that most of the objects need a non-negligible power-law contribution. When no spectral fitting can be performed (data with a low signal-to-noise ratio), the color–color diagrams allow us to roughly estimate physical parameters, such as column density, temperature of the thermal model, or spectral index for a power-law, and therefore to better constrain the origin of the X-ray emission. -
Soft X-Ray Properties of a Spectroscopically Selected Sample of Interacting and Isolated Seyfert Galaxies?

We present a catalogue of ROSAT detected sources in the sample of spectroscopically selected Seyfert 1 and Seyfert 2 galaxies of Rafanelli et al. (1995). The catalogue contains 102 Seyfert 1 and 36 Seyfert 2 galaxies. The identification is based on X-ray contour maps overlaid on optical images taken from the Digitized Sky Survey. We have derived the basic spectral and timing properties of the X-ray detected Seyfert galaxies. For Seyfert 1 galaxies a strong correlation between photon index and X-ray luminosity is detected. We confirm the presence of generally steeper X-ray continua in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies (NLS1s) compared to broad-line Seyfert 1 galaxies. Seyfert 2 galaxies show photon indices similar to those of NLS1s. Whereas a tendency for an increasing X-ray luminosity with increasing interaction strength is found for Seyfert 1 galaxies, such a correlation is not found for Seyfert 2 galaxies. For Seyfert 1 galaxies we found also a strong correlation for increasing far-infrared luminosity with increasing interaction strength. Both NLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies show the highest values of far-infrared luminosity compared to Seyfert 1 galaxies, suggesting that NLS1s and Seyfert 2 galaxies host strong (circumnuclear) star formation.
