" I ' ' ·. BAL'LARAT MINING! DISTRICT. I

I OENTRAL DIVISION. i Mr; 11avid Cltristy, Mining Registrar. ·· I am h~ppy to report that, the 'progress. of ~ining operations dt!.l'ing the quarter just past may be regarded as highly satisfactory. The amount of gold obtained, ,although less than. that of the previous quarter, does not. show any appreciable falling o:ff in the yield :from either quartz or alluvial mining, but is due to the fact that a less quantity by 5,949 tons: of quartz passed through the batteries, and, owing to the continued drought, very many of the small companies, fossickers, and Chinamen engaged' in alluvial mining have been unable to continue their workings successfully. , ' ; . , , ·The. average yield from quartz mining for the quarter noted in my statistical returns, viz., 7 dwts. 22•10 grs. per ton is considered by: those engaged in that. branch of :iuining as satisfactory, and generally will afford reasonably fair dividends: '' " · ' The reefs on the -w;est of the Yarrowee Creek, extending north and south through the city, are assuming a very hopeful aspect and attracting attention, which it 'is unaccountable they did not do years ago. ·The reef in the New Koh-i-noor claim, about the first on which active operations were carrie9. out, has not been paying so well of late tts previously; and, in consequence, the company are fm:ther sinking their shaft with, a vie~v ,to cut it at, a deeper level, from·wllich they hope to obtain more remunerative returns. The Smith's Freehold-a small company further south on :the ~ame lode-have of late been doing remarkably well, but I am unable. to state the value ·o{ _the stone they are crushing. · · . · The Band and Albion Consols·adjoining has struck a continuation of the same lode, from which excellent returns are being obtained; and the Guiding Star· Co!itpany-still further south-is obtaining stone.whi.ch is averaging 1 oz. 7 d'\Vts. per ton. : In the· eastern portion of my ,divisio,1:! the Black Hill, Llanberris, and Victoria United companies, who are prosecuting mining operations at lower levelii"than previously, find that the quartz is improving in valu11. In alluvial mining, I may say that the Band and ltibion Consols and Winter Freehold companies maintain their ordinary average returns. · · 1 The City of Ballarat Company are pursuing their operations without intermission-the water from the mine is gradually draining, and the works underground have been' confined to reef-driving. In boring up, indications of an extensive· wash have been discovered, from which good prospects of gold have been obtained, aud it is the iuteution of the manager to put up a rise into this wash of auriferous earth, after which puddling will be· proceeded with. The quantity of water sold during the quarter was 34,054,000 gallons, at 2d. per 1,000 gallons for boilers, and !d. for mining purposes. ·· ·

GORDON SUBDIVISION. , Mr: .Tkomas po~~n, Mining S~rveyor and Registrar.

ALLUVIAL MINING. Two shafts have been sunk during the quarter to test an alluvial lead, known to exist in All Nation's Gully; one by the Egerton Lead Prospecting Association, which bottomed at a depth of 113 feet; and the o.ther by H. Morris, which bottomed at a depth of 84 feet. Prospecting drives have been constructed at these depths to a short distance, but as yet nothing of a payable nature has been met with. ·No gold has been obtained during the quarter.

QUARTZ MINING. Black Horse United Company.-During the past quarter the sinking of the No. 1 shaft has steadily been proceeded with, and has now reached a depth of 925 feet. At a depth of 920feet a drive has been put in to the south, and driven to a distance of 28 feet. It is purposed in time to connect this level with .the No. 8 by a winze and a rise. TheNos. 4, 5, and 6 levels have also bet'n extended in a large body of stone. The erection of the new battery of thirty stamp-heads and engine has been proceeded with during the quarter, and it is expected will be completed in about six weeks' time. 3,390 tons of stone were crushed during the quarter, yielding 1,380 ozs. 5 dwts. of gold, or an average of 8 dwts. 3·43 grs. to the ton, and dividends to the amount of £1,000 paid. The number of men employed is 124. . The Egerton Company have been raising stone from their "Quarry" shaft at a depth of from 450 to 780 feet, and from their ''Sister Rose" shaft at a 'depth of from 530 to 760 feet. 9,876 tons of stone were, crushed during the quarter, ·which yielded 2,951 ozs. 9 dwts. 20 grs. of gold, or an average of 5 dwts. 23•45 grs. to the ton, and dividends to the amount of £4,375 paid. The company are also erecting pumping machinery at the ''Sister Rose" shaft. The number of men employed is 191. South Learmonth and Egerton Amalgamated Company.-This company started sinking their new shaft, which is some distance to the south of their old· one, ou the 7th of January, and have been steadily at work ever since, the shaft being now a depth of 113 feet. · The number of men employed is 14. No work has been done by the All Fours Company during the quarter. The N ort.Q. Black Horse· Company during the first part of the quarter prospected their ground from the 295-foot level to within a few feet of their northern boundary, and then, not having met with anything· of a payable nature, .sank a winze to a depth of 40 feet, and put in a drive to the south, which is now a distance of 60 feet. The number of men employed is 12. · · · .Ah Jack and Co. are still washing the tailings from the Egerton Company's battery, but with only one cradle on account of the scarcity of water, and only four men have therefore been engaged. oit is stated that they obtained 16 ozs. of gold during the quarter. · · · . . Ah Ming and party of four men are engaged washing the tailings from the Black Horse United Company's battery, and have obtained.during the quarter 11 o;~s. of gold. · · · · . Two men have been engaged during the quarter in sinking a shaft on lease block 1,078, but, on the date of my inspection, I was informed that operations ceased on the 22nd March. This stoppage may, however, be temporary. : · .ll~ooraoool.-Rose, and· Shamrock Company .-This company ceased operations on the 19th of March, in consequence of the· yiel.d of gold not being sufficient to warrant them continuing longer. During the time of the quarter they were at wor.k 59 tons of stone were crushed, which yielded 34 ozs. of gold, or an average of 11 dwts. 12·61 grs .. to the ton; and 9 men were employed. , · · : , ' l]:ordon.,..Parker's United Company.-During the quarter 2,150 tons of stone have been raised and crushed, yielding·804 ozs. 5;dwts. of gold, or an average of 7 dwts. ll·55 grs. to the ton. This ·Stone was taken from the lode between the 590 and 630 foot levels. The 400-foot level is still being extended south in unsettled country, but the cross-cut to the east from this level is discontinued at present. The number of men employed is 80. The party working the quartz reef to the north of Gordon, and registered as the United Working Miners' Company, have been engaged during this quarter, and a portion of the previous one, in raising stone from the surface to a depth of 20 feet. They had a trial crushing last week of 86 tons, which yielded 78 ozs. 6 dwts. of gold, or an average of 18 dwts. 5 grs. to the ton. Three men are employed. Lal Lal Iron Company, Lal Lal.-During the quarter no ore has been smelted, the company having been engaged in boring and excavating. The furnaces have been repaired, and they intend smelting about the beginning of next month. The number Of men employed is 16. ·

STEIGLITZ SUBDIVISION. Mr. Denis Murphy, Mining Registrar. The mining in this district has fallen away greatly during the past quarter, remarkably so in the Elaine portion. At Steiglitz, however, 'tl:iere is an improvement, a private party of prospectors having found a reef at the dept~ of a few f~et .from the surface; which ! believe will prove a very rich on(). It has caused quite a· sti+ in thav port1on ~of'the distnct. , · · · · · · 25

BLACKWOOD DIVISION AND BLUE MOUNTAIN SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. John F. Hansen, Mining Registrar. QUARTZ MINING. In consequence of the extreme dry season, only about two inches and a quarter of rain having fallen during the last three months, water has been very scarce, and mining operations have, in many instances, been greatly retarded. The batteries crushing with water-power have been completely at a standstill, and several batteries crushing with steam-power have been unable to work for the same reason; this is notably the case with the North Star Company, Union Reef; and the Victoria Company, Yankee Reef. The first-named company is at present burning a kiln containing 75 tons of very promising looking quartz, and getting another kiln of 50 tons ready. Gold is plainly visible in the stone under foot at the tunnel level, and a contract to sink the main shaft lOO feet below that level has been recently let. The latter company has raised a quantity of quartz which, from all appearance, will prove highly remunerative. Both companies will start crushing operations as soon as water is available. The Sultan Company have been able to crush all the quartz raised by them ; fifteen stamp-heads having been kept going with the water pumped out of their mine. The workings are all pushed on vigorously, and at the 800-foot level it is expected to reach the shoot of gold in three or four weeks. The 600 and 700 foot levels are yielding fair stone from the stopes. The Sultan lode is opening up well at the 500-foot level at the south end of the mine. At the 400-foot level some promising looking quartz has been struck recently. A dividend of £1,125, or at the rate of I Os. per share, has been declared during the quarter. The Ida Company, "Wright's Reef, since sinking and opening out below the water-level, have good reason to assume that they are in possession of a valuable mine. Hitherto this line of reef above the water-level has been remarkable for the almost entire absence of any pyrites in the quartz, but below the water-level it seems to have undergone a complete change: the stone is of a more highly auriferous nature, but in consequence of the great quantity of mineral in the lode, and the fineness of the gold, the yield was not so good as the appearance of the stone indicated. To obviate the loss of the fine gold as much as possible, the mining manager (Mr. Bedford) has devised a plan which is likely to be highly effective. He has laid reverse-acting copper plates so as to receive the discharge from the boxes; the plates are pitched at a slight gradient; and judging from a trial it is likely to be very successful ; if so, I will try to obtain all particulars for my next report.

ALLUVIAL MINI:lfG. The yield of gold from this source of mining, namely, 870 ozs., as against 1,030 ozs. obtained in the previous quarter, is, when the scarcity of water is taken into consideration," as a whole, satisfactory. The miners working the banks and bed of the River Lerderderg have been supplied with water from the. reservoir; al1out 1,000,000 gallons per diem was left running, for which 1s. per week per man using the same was charged, giving a net income of about £3 per week to the shire council. The reservoir, however, being almost empty, it was, three weeks ago, shut down, so as to allow only about a tom stream running, for which no charge is made; The rainfall during the quarter has been as follows, namely :-January, 0•29 ; February, 0•85; March, 1'15 ; total, 2·29 inches. No miners are employed in mining for metals or minerals other than gold. No other water having been available, noue has been sold except as referred to above.

BALLAN SUBDIVISION. J.lfr. Jokn P. Hansen, }dining Registrar. No proper mining of any description has been carried on in this subdivision during the quarter.

BEECHWORTH MINING DISTRICT.

BEECHWORTH DIVISION. Mr. Alexander Alderdice, 1lfining Registrar. Very little rain has fallen during the past quarter, but the supply of water has continued to be very fair not withstanding, and the sluicers are still taking advantage of it. Some of the larger claims at the Three-mile Creek and Stanley have washed down ·with very good results for the past season ; thus showing that when the supply of water is at all favorable the auriferous ground in these localities will always give good returns for sluicing. I hope to be able next quarter to say the same about the ground at Spring Creek and the locality surrounding. Considerable progress has been made with the Rocky Mountain Company's tunnel during the past quarter. It is now in 1,945 feet, and the contractors believe they will be able to finish the remaining 400 feet within six months. If this be done the company will be in full work by the end of the year. . Quartz reefiug has been altogether confined to the four old claims which are named in my report, and they are all proving fairly remunerative. Very little prospecting is being done in the division at present. The Dublin Reef at Stony Creek has again been taken up, and a shoot of stone discovered in it which is likely to go about 2 ozs. to the ton. Paul .Brothers have also found payable stone in the Rob Roy Reef, Buffalo Creek. No crushings have taken place from either of these reefs, but the owners think that they will prove very rich. There is only one claim working at present at Eldorado. 'l'he Ovens Gold and Tin Prospecting Company became defunct about six weeks ago, although the manager still believes that payable ground exists in the company's lease. Before the Eldorado Lead can be further developed a considerable amount of capital must be expended in prospecting, and the district has become so poor lately that. this can only be done by persons outside of it. At Stony Creek the alluvial millers are still raising payable washdirt, though none has been washed, in consequence of the scarcity of water at that place. When water is available it is thought that there will be a considerable increase to the population here.

MIT1'A MITTA SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. D. H. Gilmore, Mining Registrar. There is no change in the alluvial in this subdivision. The only thing creating any stir is the quartz. New reefs, bearing gold pretty freely, are being found every few days. Claims are being pegged out and registered ; but as there is still no machinery for crushing, there is not much real work done. Mr. Spargo is busy erecting his battery at Granite Flat. Re expects to have it finished in about a month. Mr. 'l'urner has purchased a battery for this place (the Junction). It is at Wodonga, awaiting the waggons. All the practical reefers who have been here speak of this place as likely to become a very good reeling district, the country being very different to that about Bethanga.

JAMIESON SUBDIVISION. Mr. W •.H. Edtvards, A-fining Registrar. The Sailor Bill's tribute party, consisting of eight men, are working in the intermediate level; they report the stone improving in appearance, and will commence crushing as soon as water is available, having about 250 tons of stone ready. Gleeson's Lease Company.-The tributers are still breaking stone from different portions of the mine. They have four men working inN o. 3 pass, stoping out below the level of the Sailor Bill's tunnel, and have also driven 14 feet west below the level of No. 4 tunnel, eut~ing across a reef 8 feet wide, showing a few colors. They will commence crushing as soon as there is sufficient water. The Venture Company are working north and south on the Spur Reef; ,there is a little gold showing in the atone. The Perseverance contractors are steadily driving the tunnel south ; the reef has not yet been broken into.

SANDHURST MINING DISTRICT.

SANDHURST DIVISION. JJfr. N. G. Stephens, Mining Registrar. There has been a slight falling off in the quantity of quartz produced during the past quarter, and the average yield of gold therefrom is somewhat lower. . The want of rain has been severely felt in portions of the district; some claims and machines have had to cease operations in consequence. In other parts the supply of water from the Coli ban has afforded employment to a great many miners. Between Spring Gully and the White Hills numerous parties are engaged in sluicing ground that has remained unworked for many years, and I believe that most of them are doing well. One party on the Third White Hill (:McGan and Co.) employ more than thirty men, and work night and day. In the subjoined tabular statement some good yields from quartz will be found, notably the United Hustler's and Redan Companies, from a discovery made in a cross-cut. The Carlisle North Garden Gully and Pass-by United Company, on the Garden Gully Reef, are daily expecting to meet with a new reef in a cross-cut they are putting in to the west. If they succeed in finding one that is payable, it will he of great importance to the district. The quantity of water sold for mining purposes in this division during the past quarter was l04,000,00Q gallons. KILMORE DIVISION. Mr. James W. Osborn, Mining Registrar. The past quarter has seen trial crushings at the new battery erected by the Doyle's Reef Quartz Crushing Com pany at Reedy Creek, the most prominent of which have been from Doyle's Reef and Chapman's Iteef. The Crown claim adjoining Doyle's have struck a reef showing more than payable gold, and, as it is near the boundary of Doyle's, will no doubt enter that claim in about 15 or 20 feet. Some· 30 tons of stone are ready to crush, but the continued drought precludes any more crushing until rain falls. Great expectations are indulged in as to the future of the Kilmore diggings, three claims being at work; but the distance to cart stuff for crushing will necessitate a battery on the ground, the erection of which is in con templation. The Kimmerlos Company, Strath Creek, bottomed and drove 10 feet, but without profitable results. No water is sold in this division for mining purposes.

HEATHCOTE DIVISION AND W ARANGA SOUTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. E. C. Bell, )'fining Registrar. During the past quarter alluvial mining in this division has been almost at a standstill for want of water. The Alabama and Butler's Reef Company, the most important mine here, have had no crushing, but have been engaged sinking a shaft and opening out for new level. On the 18th February last, this company, at the 500-foot level, struck a reef that will, in all probability, go from 4 to 6 ozs. to the ton. The Albion Company, at Lower Costerfield, crushed 120 tons, the average yield of gold being 10 dwts. 3 grs. No crushing has been done at Red castle, owing to the want of water. The Why Not Reef, which was supposed to have run out lately, has been found again, after sinking 40 feet and driving 15 feet; six loads taken out produced 1 oz. to the ton. A large number of reefs at Redcastle were worked to a certain depth in the early days and abandoned for want of better appliances; two of them have been recently re-opened, and payable stone is now being raised. There is an excellent opening at Redcastle for capitalists to re-open reefs supposed to be worked out, and there is a considerable quantity of antimony in some of the reefs.

WARANGA NORTH SUBDIVISION. Mr. Henry Hicks, Mining Registrar. Quartz.-The long drought of the present season has had a very marked effect on the returns of g~ld obtained at the various crushing machines; the dams lJeing quite dry, scarcely any work has been done. Several paddocks of good stone await crushin£l'. Alluvial.-A like drawback has been experienced by the alluvial miners. But little change has taken place in the number of resident.miners, although many have turned their attention to other pursuits until rain comes. Metals other than gold.-Nothing has been done during quarter. ·

MARYBOROUGH MINING DISTRICT.

MARYBOROUGH DIVISION. Mr. P. Virtue, jun., llfining Registrar. No season of such excessive drought as this has been experienced in this district for a number of years. In consequence, the supply of water has been so diminished in the dams and watercourses as to have operated most injuriously to the mining interests of the district. The pyrites works at Mariner's Reef and two of the crushing machines have remained idle during nearly the whole of the quarter; while the puddlers and fossickers have been put to great straita to earn a bare living. QuARTz MrNING. This class of mining still continues to make favorable progress. Excellent returns have been obtained from the mines at Bristol Hill, Telegraph, Blucher's, and Leviathan lteefs. Messrs. Anderson Brothers are still making valuable improvements on their mine. 'l.'hey have recently accepted a contract from Conway and party for sinking the main shaft to a further depth of 120 feet, which, when complete\!, will make the total depth of the shaft 620 feet. The cost of sinking the 120 feet will be £6 10s. a foot. The reef at Bristol Hill has been found to increase in thickness and in quality as it descends, The pyrites obtained from the mine is sent by rail to Clunes for treatment, with excellent results. Before long pyrites works will be erected on the spot. The Telegraph United Company are making excellent progress. The mine is looking well, and all the appointments are in good order. About 40 tons of payable stone are at grass. The last crushing of 47 tons gave a yield of 110 ozs., or an average of 2 ozs. 6 dwts. 19 grs. per ton. Messrs. Wardley and Park are working the Leviathan Reef mine with capital results. The want of water prevents them from crushing now, but they have 140 tons of stone at grass. 1'heir last crushing of 149 tons gave a yield of 123 ozs. 14 dwts. 15 grs., or an average of 16 dwts. 13 grs. per ton. The depth of sinking is from 60 to 80 feet. The Queen Victoria Company, of Mariner's Reef, have completed the erection of their machinery, whieh has been entirely remodelled. They are now engaged in pumping the water out of the main shaft, which will probably occupy a period of five weeks, and then mining operations will be resumed. Mr. John Carlyon is prospecting his ground held under lease near the Telegraph Reef. In a shaft of 30 feet deep a reef of excellent formation has been cut, which carries gold on the surface.

ALr,uvuL MINING. At Carisbrook, the mines are still making good progress, and I believe that the most of them will soon be in a position to pay dividends. At the Alma, the Bismarck is improvmg; and the other mines there would have given much better returns but for the want of water. At Timor, t.he Duke is making good progress, but the Victoria is still idle. 30

DUNOLLY AND TARNAGULLA .DIVISIONS. Mr. W. G. Coucltman, Mining Surveyor and Registrar . ., As may be seen by 'the report of this quarter, quartz mining continues to improve. From reliable information whic~ _I have received, I venture to state that the report for the uext quarter will show mining operations to be more lucrative, owing to the Queen's Birthday mine, from its remarkable success, having been the cause of inducing enterprising speculators to start new companies. •• i •• ~·i ST. ARNAUD NORTH SUBDIVISION. ',f' Mr. W.. ,G. Couchman,)Jfining 1 S'lftr'fey~r .and Reg_istrar. There is nothing worth notice in this subdivision, but the general complaint of the want of water is severely felt by the miners. , . .

CASTLEMAINE MINING DISTRICT.

,' • ~ r. •;. t t CASTLEMAJ;NE DIVISION. " Mr. T. L. Brown, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. In alluvial mining there are no discoverie~. Numerous parties are still an~iously waiting to obtain heads of water, convinced that the large area of old workings will afford them profitable employment. An increased number of men are utilizing the tail water from sluices now in operation. Quartz mining has been very dull during the past quarter. The Chewton United machinery has been removed to the Fryer's division. The Eureka. Consols mine (the only remaining public company) has been sold, and is now in the hands of the bank, The Nuggetv Company have succeeded in draining the extensive Nuggety line of reef to 275-foot level, and will now be enabled to follow the rich runs of gold worked to water-level. The Wattle Gully Company have put in a .cross-cut at 270-foot level, 140 feet west, in fine slate country, carrying quartz leaders showing gold. The shaft sunk to recover the diamond drill is down 70·feet on the quartz leader, 2 feet wide, showing gold, which was found whilst working the drill. . . . . Several of our old reefs, or continuatious thereof, are being prospected •. ·: .-.· The Sebastopol Crushing and other companies have bee.n unable to crush during the quarter fo~ want of water. McWalter's claim continues good, 2 ozs:. 18 dwts. to the ton, but adjoining claimholders cannot as yet find the same run of stone. · · The quantity of water sold during the quarter for mining purposes was 150,300,000 gallons., at id. per 1000 gall~ms; 7op,ooo gaflons,. a~ 4d. per 1000 gallons.-Total, 101,050,000 gallons.

FRYER'S CREEK DIVISION. fir ..Mark Amos, JJHning Surveyor and Registrar~

PoPULATION. During the past ·three months there has been no perceptible change. in th'e number of miners located over the district. The uncertainty of finding better fields operates as a check on those who have established permanent homes.

Pu.DDLING AND Sr.uiCING. The returns for the past .quarter are not so satisfactory as might be desired-.not from want of energy nnd perseverance on behalf of those who engage, in .this description of mining. The great scarcity of water for sluicing purposes has had the effect. of retarding mining operations to a considerable extent. A great deal of wash dirt is now being stacked, to be in readiness when w;>ter shall be available and more abundant.· . The Loddon Company's race has ceased running for some time, and the dry weather has seriously affected the ftumiilg, which stands much in need of repair; but the company have no particular reason to ineur extra expenses, as the dividends have been very small and far between. The anticipations as to the productiveness of the old workings (deserted and abandoned by the puddlers) have not been realized in a way to satisfy the parties interested. However, the alluvial miner is now satisfied with very small returns. .

QUARTZ MINING. In this branch of mining there is nothing of special importance to t:eport. The yield of gold during the past three months in the aggregate is not much below previous quarters; the average yield per ton of quartz crushed is about 4 dwts., 9,587 tons having been crushed. The Ferron's Reef Company (New Era) are still actively engaged in sinking, having now reached a depth in their engine-shaft of 450 feet. A vast quantity of stone is still in view. Siit.feighf men and boys are employed in connection with the various works. · · · . Th? F~yer~s Company, S~a!l and Co., Blac_k H:i.wk, Rowe Brothers, and the various other companies in the ne1ghborl:iood of Fryerstowil; have been progressmg steadily, and on the whole there is no puxticular grounds for taking a gloomy view of mining 'prospects in this division as compared with other portions of the Castlemaine district. No water sold during the quarter. 32

HEPBURN DIVISION.

~lir. Thomas Hale, Minin,q Registrar. Not only have numerous sluicing and other alluvial workings been completely stopped for want of water, but even quartz claims; for the same reason, all the races in the division have been for months completely dry, and the rcturhs given in the tables are consequently very-meagre. The Rising Star Quartz Company, Frenchman's Reef, have sunk a new shaft 200 feet, and cut a chamber, drive, and cross-cut 30 feet east; but a :flow of water has been struck. 750 tons of quartz yielded 125 ozs. The Specimen Hill Company's claim and machinery have been purchased by Messrs. Macmillan and Co. ; there is little doubt but the speculation will prove_a good one. The Cornish Company's claim is being worked on tribute. The Argus Company are still erecting machinery over main shaft, and are placing 9-inch pumps and lifts to 300-foot levels. Walker's Last Chance, Keep-it-Dark Reef, gave 8! ozs. per ton for 12 tons crushed, and other claims there gave from 15 to 18 dwts. per ton; 100 tons await crushing for want of water. There are numerous reefs in this division which have been, comparatively speaking, untouched, probably due in a great measure to the want of easy access from the outer mining centres. It is hoped that the completion of the railway works now in progress may lead to the district being brou~ht more prominently under the notice of the mining public. This division is suff~ring greatly through various drawbacks, the most prominent of which is the want of outside capital to develop the goldfield. The quantity of water sold during the quarter has been very little, if any. During the past six months 7 inches and 6 points only of rain have fallen. The township old lead is again being tested. Kessell and party have sunk a shaft on Millar's property, Bridport street, to a depth of 70 feet. A crushing of the wash is being done at Freeman's battery. From the want of water in the races, puddling is generally impossible. · Some very valuable races and claims have changed hands in anticipation of a termination of the protracted drought of five months.

TARAD.ALE AND KYNETON StJBDIVISION. flfr. Stephen Dorman, Mining Registrar. There has been an increase during the quarter in the amount of gold obtained of more than 600 ozs., chiefly from alluvial-the Ironstone Hill claim contributing the large yield of 1,347 ozs. The Confluence Company's mine is being well opened out; the average yield from dirt washed is good. The ground referred to in my previous report, at Malmsbury reserve, is turning out well. Several shafts have been sunk, but the parties are unable to wash on account of want of water. The tributers of Trafalgar, Victol'ia, and Comet mines have given up; the claims are at present idle. At present, mining at Lauriston and Belltopper has· ceased for want of water.

TARRANGOWER DIVISION. Mr. Robert Nankivell, Mining Surveyor and Registrar.

ALLUVIAL MINING. In this branch of mining the yield has fallen off over 150 ozs. during the quarter, owing to the want of water. The only water to be got now is from the Eaglehawk Limited Company's mine. It has been purchased by some parties of Chinese, who have conveyed it by a race to Growler's Gully, where they are now busily engaged sluicing the gully, and to all. appearances are highly satisfied with the profits obtained.

QuARTz MINING. This branch of mining shows a decrease of 824 tons in the quantity crushed, and over 350 ozs. in the yield of gold, the cause of which in a great measure is the suspension of work in several of our principal mines, viz., the two Nelsons, the Crown claim, the Cymru, the Great Western, the Beehive, six mines on the Eaglehawk line, three mines on the Nuggety line, the Grand Junction and Welshman's Reef, and three mines on the Victoria line mH.king altogether twenty mines in which the engines are idle, and the water within from 100 to l 80 feet of the surface. All the work being done in these mines is merely fossicking in the shallow ground. About half-a-dozen energetic tribute companies (backed by tradespeople and others in the locality) have recently started, and, after considerable outlay in draining the mines and getting them in good working order, are likely to be w'ell remunerated. One of the parties, known as the Linscott's Tribute Company, has been in receipt of good dividends for the last seven months. It was the good prospect in this mine that induced the Duke Tribute Company to start in the Wellington mine, about four months ago. They have now drained the mine of over 400 feet of water, and driven over 60 feet westward, and expect to strike the reef in a few feet further. ~'he German Reef and \Velcome Tribute Companies have come upon some splendid stone within the last week. A bucket of stone sent up from the Welcome yesterday caused great excitement among the shareholders, most of whom are local men. A party of men-four brothers, 'named Locke-farmers on the Loddon, to fill up their spare time since harvest, started prospecting near Irish Billy's Reef, and this week discovered a lode, at a depth of 25 feet, 10 inches thick, a ton of stone from which produced 14 ozs. of retorted gold. Maldon only wants prospecting under good management to make It one of the best quartz mining districts in Vi.ctoria.

ST. ANDREW'S DIVISION. l Mr. Alfred Armstrong, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. The only new circumstance I l)ave to report is the registration of a prospecting claim on Bear's Creek, Upper Yarra, near the Great Britain Reef, Donovan's Creek, which was worked some years since. The alluvial workings employ about the same number of men, with about the same results, as formerly. 1'be hydraulic works at W arburton, which have been some time suspended, will, I am informed, be shortly let on tribute. 33

The quartz mines at Panton Hill are in a state of uncertainty, the lessees being unable to erush for want of water. The Progress Company have a considerable quantity of stone ready to crush as soon as the dam supplies sufficient water for the purpose. . The Unity lessees, at Hoddle's Creek, have only recently completed their plant, and have not yet started crushing. so that no returns have been had from them. 'l'he owners of dykes referred to in my last report could only commence to crush towards the end of the quarter, the crushing mill on the river being still out of repair; the returns are therefore smaller than I anticipated. At Reefton the returns are also small, in consequence of the large quantity of dead work which has been only recently completed, and the inability of the company to work the ground until a greater depth had been attained by a tunnel tapping the reef at a lower level. The district on the whole shows a slight change for the better.

BLUE MOUNTAIN NORTH SUBDIVISION. lr.lr. Graham McPherson, Mining Registrar. Mining is at present at a very low ebb in this district. In the shallow ground there is no water either for puddling or sluicing purposes, and most of the miners have recently been working on the railway in course of constructiou between Carlsruhe and Daylesford.

ARARAT MINING DISTRICT.

7 ARARAT DIVISION. Mr. Thomas Foyster, Mining Registrar. The continuous dry weather of the past quarter has caused several sluicing parties to suspend operations, and the yield of gold has consequently fallen much below the returns of the preceding three months. On the claim of the Rescue Company, on the Upper Wet Lead, a 10 horse-power engine, with an 8-inch lift of pipes, has been erected, and the further development of the mine will be at once proceeded with. The depth at which manuallabor vras beaten by the water was 63 feet; and although the company expect to bottom at 75 feet, it is intended to put down the shaft about 90 feet before opening out to test the deep ground. At the Ararat claim, on Mitchell's Reef, the present depth of·shaft is 318 feet, and recently the sinking has cut through the course of a reef with well-defined walls 2 feet apart. A drive to the west has been put in at the 265-foot level a distauce of 49 feet 4 inches to the westward, and another drive is about being started towards the east. The 'I'ry Again Company have driven in the 196-foot level a distance of lOO feet north along the course of the reef, which now shows a thiclmess of 5 inches.

PLEASANT CREEK DIVISION . .1.l1r. H. C. Bate, j].fining Surveyo1· and Registrar. There is a great falling off to be noted for the past quarter in the amount of quartz crushed and the total and' average amount of gold obtained therefrom. One splendid crushing has, however, just been completed of stone taken from the New Scotchman's Flat Reef, recently discovered in the mine of the Pleasant Creek Cross Reef Compauy-the yield averaging 6 ozs. 17 dwts. 10 grs. per ton from 102 tons. lVI ining affairs generally are very dull. The quantity of water sold during the quarter in this division for purposes was 484,000 gallons.

BARKLY DIVISION. Mr. I:l. C. Bate, .lriining Surveyor and Registrar. Mining affairs continue very dull in this division, and the yield of gold for the past quarter is much less than, usual. The long-continued dry weather will perhaps in some measure account for this.

UAGLAN DIVISION. JJ1r. C. W. Minchin, Mining Registrar. I am glad to be able to report that the mining prospects I){ this district have very much improved during the past quarter, quite a revival having taken place; some eight or ten new leases having been applied for, chiefly on the Beaufort and Waterloo Flats. At the latter, the New Victoria Company have had a very encouraging return for the quarter. The Hobart Pasha Gold :Mining Company, close by, have completed the sinkiug of their shaft (189 feet), and are about to commence driving, with good prospects. This is becoming a very important district, and it is likely to get a fai~ trial now, as a good deal of Ballarat capital is being invesled iri it. The '.relegraph Co-operative Company, whose claim is situated at the south end of the old reservoir, arc still driving, and have had a small yield of gold, expecting it to improve daily. W~ather still dry, and water rather scarce. No. 16. c 34

- GIPPSLANb 'MINING 'DiSTRICT.

OlVIEO SUBDIVISION. jlfr. J. Odell, Acting ]}fining Registrar. Mining generally is about the same as it was during the last quarter. There is an increase in the number of miners on the Sassafras and Saltpetre Ureeks, and some active prospecting is being carried on in the latter, with good indications. The track at present being cut by Mr. Surveyor Whitelaw's party will-be a great assistance in opening up this portion of the district. At Swift's Creek the crushing machinery has been lying idle, but about 51 tons of quartz have been raised and stacked, pending a good supply of water. ·

MITCHELL RIVER SUBDIVISION. Mr. John Grimes Peers, Mining Surveyor and Registrar. Mining matters generally throughout this subdivision are in the same depressed state as previously reported. ·Quartz mi.ning is at a complete standstill. The aliuvial miners on the Nicholson and Tambo Rivers appear to be earning a fair livelihood; at any rate they seem satisfied. A number of them hold selections under the 19th section of the existing Land Act. None of the galena mines at Buchan are being worked. · Gold is the only metal or mineral searched for. No water is sold in this subdivision for mining purposes .

. BOGGY CREEK SUBDIVISION. l!Ir. J. Fletcher; JJfining Registrar . . ·: The'r(ds nothing to i·eporf on .'in IDY. subdivision' during tlie ·quarter. ·water is 'vecy sc'ai·ce, but the 'diggers seem satisfied with small wages. · There are ~·few parties making good wages: ' . , . A .crushing machine is being erected _on tho Galloway Reef.

CROOKED RIVER DIVISION. Mr. James T1·avis, Mining Registrar. Quartz mining has been very slack during the present quarter. Excepting the Union, there has been no stone crushed from any of the mines in this division. A fe)v tons of tailings were crushed at the Good Hope, the return from which was so satisfactory that arrangements are in progress to put through a large quantity during the ensuing quarter. An effort is also being made to form a new .company in connection with this mine, having for its object the putting 'in of a level that will cut the reef at a depth of 1,100 feet from the surface. The eagerness with which the working miners here seek a share in the venture on the terms offered is good evidence of the confidence generally felt in its ultimately proving a remunerative speculation. · ' '£here has been a good deal of shifting about from place to place amongst 'the alluvial miners during the past three months, nevertheless a fair amount of gold has been obtained by them. There is no water sold in this division, and no mining done for metals or minerals other than gold.

JERICHO DIVISION. Mr. R. J. Donaldson, ]}fining Registrar. Quartz mining has been' entirely suspended during the quarter just erided, but work on the Loch Fyne Com pany's lease will be resumed at once, as a party of .miner~ have· taken up the ground under miners' rights, the .company's lease having been declared >oid a few days ago. · . Want of water has interfered with alluvial mining considerably, though some of the claims on the Lower .Jordan have been paying well. · . Payable ground having been discovered on one of the branches of the Upper Jordan, a number of miners have .settled down there, who arc likely to do well during the winter. No mining for other minerals or metals than gold. No water sold.

DONNELLY'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. 0. P. WMtelaw, Mining Surveyor and Registt·ar.; The only company that has dorie any crushing during the quarter is the Gippsland Consols. They redri.ceu 120 tons, yielding 37 ozs. 9 dwts., and obtained 25 ozs. from the plates. The Bismarck; Hit-or-Miss, and' Victory Companies are raising stone, but cannot reduce, owing to want of water. No metals other than gold mined .for, and no water sold. 35

STRINGER'S CREEK DIVISION. j}fr. W. M. Smith, Mining Registrar.

QUARTZ. The only dividend-paying quartz mine in this division at the present time is the Long Tunnel Company. which for permanency of lode and richness of stone has, during the quarter, fully maintained its reputation. The shareholders of the W alhalla Company, after drawing handsome dividends for so many years, do not take kindly to paying calls, which, for the first time in the history of the company, it has been found necessary recently to make; and con· sequently the development of virgin country is more or less retarded. This is the more to be ~;egretted, as the prospects in the southern portion of the claim are reported to be encouraging. I have nothing new to report of the other mines on this line of reef, all of which are at present progressive. Work, however, is being carried on in these and the one at the Happy-go-Lucky, and also at the Plutus, Yarraman's Creek, with spirit and enterprise.

ALLUVIAJ,. In this branch of mining, besides the ordinary creek and river sluieing, which continues to give a fair return for the labor and c:tpital expended, a party of miners are driving a tuuhel some 600 or 700 feet, to endeavor to prospect ~drift supposed to exist below the flow of basalt to be found on the ranges between the Thomson River and Jacoh's Creek. They had previously sunk a shaft to over lOO· feet, but were unfortunate in losing it through too great a flow of water in the upper drift. CoPPER. The W alhalla Copper Company's mine and machinery at Cooper's Creek are now in full work, turning out a good quantity and quality of copper. There are about 70 men employed in connection with the mine.

ABERFELDY SUBDIVISION. Mr. jJf. Nugimt, Mining Registrar. There has not been so much gold obtained as during last quarter, as mining operations were retarded for want 'l)f water. From 350 tons of stone obtained from the Aberfeldy claim an average of 17 dwts. 20·57 grs. per ton was got, which was very 'good, considering that. the stone was not picked, but that all the stuff that came from the claim was crushed. The reef in the mine has been proved to the depth of 175 feet, and is getting richer as it goes down; its width is about 4 feet. There has not been any crushing during the quarter by the Lily Company, but it is expected that the reef will be cut in about three weeks . .Matters are beginning to look up in the l;one Star and Thompson. The company are driving to reach the shaft, which has been sunk on a payable reef to the depth of 120 feet, parts of which went 5 ozs. to the ton. They are now about 40 feet from it, and expect to strike gold every day. As regards alluvial, some of the miners are doing very well. Some of the miners on the Thomson River made from £4 to £6 per man per week, others on the Aberfeldy River obtained £10 per week.

RUSSELL'S CREEK DIVISION. Mr. C. H. Williams, JJ1ining Registrar. Mining operations have been much the same as last quarter-very dull; the miners in the gullies scarcely able to make a living for want of water. · · The Baw Baw sluicing company are pushing on with their race, and will be able to supply a good number of men with water when they have it completed, and will open up a large tract of country known to be gold-bearing, but too poor to work save by hydraulie power. No water sold in this division.

BENDOC SUBDIVISION. j}fr. John Nicltol, Mining Registrar. Quartz mining in this subdivision still remains in the same depressed state, and nothing doing. During the quarter nothing has transpired worthy of record. As a rule, the alluvial miners seem satisfied with their earnings, which appear more profitable to them than any other employment. :Many of the Chinese have.lefe this district, and have found employment as shepherds, cooks, &c., on the side of the border. No mining for metals other than gold. No water sold in this subdivision.

TARWIN SUBDIVISION. Mr. H. M. Murphy, Mining Registrar. . Durin&' the quarter mining seems to have taken a new start in this division. The prospectors have formed a eomp~ny .agam, and are now al~ost in full _work. The Forty Thieves Company's. engine is being moved to the opposite s1de of the creek, and w11l soon he m full work. Four men are prospectmg at the Benison Cr€ek and seven at _1'u~o:t;t's qre~k, with every hope of success. ' Tm m1mng lB m the same state as on the date of my last report.

TRARALGO~ SUBDIVISION. Mr. C. Denis, Mining Registrar. Since m:y last, mining has not made much pr;>gress, ?n account of the scarcity of water ; mining operations in so_me places be1?!S: suspended, and only those parties havmg permanent water being able to carry on w01·k. 'l'he Pwneer qold Mmmg Company, on Couehman's Creek, have not yet commenced washing, being engaged in the constructiOn of a. w~ter-race and other wo;ks. required to be done before commencing OJ?erations. Coal and lignite have been found w1thm the last few days on the Morwell, near 1ts junction with the Lo. Trohe.
