'Grey's Anatomy' Star Talks About Black Representation in Media As Well As His Provocative Acceptance Speech at the 2016 BET Awards
Philip Martin Gallery At the opening of photographer Kwame Brathwaite's new show "Celebrity and the Everyday," the 'Grey's Anatomy' star talks about black representation in media as well as his provocative acceptance speech at the 2016 BET Awards Fans of Grey’s Anatomy grew concerned last month when the dashing Dr. Jackson Avery, played by Jesse Williams, vanished from the popular TV show for a few weeks, fueling speculation until his recent return. "I was off shooting a movie called Random Acts of Violence, and I'm back. Crisis of conscience, lost his child, lost his ex-wife, lost a patient, so ventured out into the woods and find himself, which I think men need to do more often. Let's call it a mental health angle," Williams said of 2712 S. La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90034 philipmartingallery.com 310 559 0100 Philip Martin Gallery his disappearance when The Hollywood Reporter caught up with him at Philip Martin Gallery in Culver City where he introduced a new show, "Celebrity and the Everyday" (through Dec. 22), a collection of photos by 80-year-old photographer Kwame S. Brathwaite, co-curated by Williams and the artist's son, Kwame Jr. For more than 50 years Brathwaite has trained his lens on African-American subjects: Muhammad Ali in the Congo, seated alone in profile on a bench on a gray day by the water; a furrow-browed Bob Marley, guitar in hand, lost in thought during a sound check; or model Ethel Parks, a member of Grandassa Agency, featuring only African-American women and founded by Brathwaite and his brother, Elombe Brath, to challenge white beauty standards. -

The series is comprised of eight human stories of what inequality looks like in people’s everyday lives. More than just looking at the way this crisis affects us all, the film also looks at the solutions that can help end inequality and unite us as a country. AMERICA DIVIDED is an excellent tool for community outreach and education and addresses the following issues: • Housing Affordability • Labor • Housing Discrimination • Minimum Wage • Racism • Addiction • Implicit Bias • Voting Rights • Criminal Justice • Education • Community & Police Relationships • Local Policy • Education • Environmental Justice • School segregation • Public Works & Safety • Immigration • School-to-Prison Pipeline • Citizenship • Money in Politics 3 A LETTER FROM THE CREATORS AND EXECUTIVE PRODUCERS Dear Viewer, Thank you so much for watching AMERICA DIVIDED. Our team wanted to explore the inequality crisis, expose the damage it inflicts on the most vulnerable Americans, reveal systemic bias, and celebrate real-world heroes fighting for solutions. We were hoping our voices, our investigative journalism, and our platforms could help effect some change. We’ve started to accomplish our goals through this docu-series and our talented correspondents who went into the field to do some important reporting about the issues that matter: inequality in education, housing, health, labor, mass incarceration and criminal justice, immigration, and the influence of money on our political system. -

Calling out Culture Vultures: Nonwhite Interpretations of Cultural Appropriation in the Era of Colorblindness
Calling Out Culture Vultures: Nonwhite Interpretations of Cultural Appropriation in the Era of Colorblindness A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School at the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in the Department of Sociology of the College of Arts and Sciences by Aaryn L. Green B.A., University of Cincinnati, 2009 M.A. University of Cincinnati, 2012 Dissertation Chair: Erynn Casanova Committee Members: Jennifer Malat Annulla Linders June 2018 Abstract Colorblind theory argues that racism has not subsided but has taken on a new form which appears nonracial and is hard to detect. Music videos are one form of popular culture that utilizes cross-racial or cultural images which appear to be racially inclusive, but when closely analyzed are firmly rooted in traditional stereotypes and take cultural expressions out of their proper sociohistorical contexts. This process is called cultural appropriation. Too often, researchers have determined what modes of appropriation are or are not harmful to various groups without any input from those groups. In this study I provide a space for racial groups whose creations or expressions are habitually appropriated to tell us which modes of appropriation they consider to be harmful. I use a dual qualitative method—music video content analysis and focus group interviews with 61 participants—to investigate representations of nonwhite cultures and how audiences of color interpret the use of their cultures within popular music -

DESPINA STOKOU SHOUT! October 14 - November 13, 2016 OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, October 14, 6-8Pm
DESPINA STOKOU SHOUT! October 14 - November 13, 2016 OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, October 14, 6-8pm Derek Eller Gallery is proud to present SHOUT!, an exhibition of paintings by Despina Stokou. Shout! To many people, the word “shout” immediately acts as a call to dance, let loose and visit that wild side... It’s in the primal yells of the Isley Brothers’ famous 1959 call-and-response hit ‘Shout!’ or in their ‘Twist and Shout’ of the same year. These are just two in a long list of the hits later appropriated by a dominant white culture, often with little acknowledgement of the cultural precedents or connection to the political realities of African-Americans in the US at that time, or still, today… I don’t want to hear anymore about how far we’ve come when paid public servants can pull a drive-by on 12-year old playing alone, in the park in broad daylight, killing him on television and then going home to make a sandwich1 Shout a little bit louder now… SHOUT! continues Stokou’s exploration of popular culture and political debates as mediated (and distorted) by Despina Stokou, Shout!, 2016, marker, acrylic, chalk and collage on linen, 40 x 30 inches contemporary public forums. As an artist, curator, and writer, Stokou’s work is concerned primarily with the expression of language in its myriad forms, from blog posts and Twitter comments to press releases and drug prescriptions. Probing the depths (or shallows) of the Internet, Stokou critically examines the conflation of history with trending topics, and the effects of these shifting forms of communication in the physical world. -
