11 12 Meet the Ballet Pensacola Artistic Staff

Debi Janea –Academy Director / Interim Artistic Director Debi Janea has lived in Pensacola since she was 7 years old. She grew up through the Ballet Pensacola Academy until the age of 18 when she was offered a position with the professional company. Janea became a at age 24 and has performed countless roles for the Pensacola community throughout the years including The Sugar Plum Fairy, Alice in Wonderland, and Cinderella. Also, at age 18, she began her training to formally teach ballet while also beginning to choreograph for the Pensacola Little Theatre. Over her 10 years of being a teacher and choreographer, she has worked with several ballet schools and high schools in our community. Currently, she is also the choreographer for Navarre High School’s drama department. Debi began teaching dance there in 2018 and has directed/choreographed several musicals with them such as Little Shop of Horrors, Little Mermaid, and Footloose. She has also choreographed many pieces for students within the Ballet Pensacola Academy and taught choreography for Ballet Pensacola’s stage performances for many years. Janea’s goal is to continue to train professional standard ballet technique while creating a positive and safe place for all students, and to open not only open lines of communication, but also provide new opportunities for students and patrons in the Pensacola community. “Ballet Pensacola has always been a second home to me, and I want that for each and every student as well. The potential in our community, our professional dancers, and our students is endless, and Ballet Pensacola will honor its past while moving into a bright future.”

Andrew McCrary-Montgomery – Technical Director Andrew has been active in the Pensacola theatre community for over 15 years. He has studied with local technical directors and artists Bob Gandrup, Lance Branon, Jim Culton, and Sarah Setta. He serves as a Technical Director for Navarre High School’s drama department. Andrew is in his tenth season working with Ballet Pensacola and is excited to begin his role as Technical Director. He would like to thank the production staff for all their hard work as well as his colleagues working within the company.

13 Ballet Pensacola Principal Dancers

Hannah Holtsclaw Hannah Holtsclaw is from Andover, Connecticut, where she began ballet training at Connecticut Concert Ballet. Holtsclaw is beginning her third season as a principal dancer with Ballet Pensacola, where she has performed the roles of Dream Clara, Cinderella, and . Holtsclaw graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) earning a B.F.A. degree in Dance in December 2019. During her on campus studies, Holtsclaw was selected to work with three guest choreographers, performed the principal role of Nikiya in La Bayadere, and choreographed and staged two original pieces for the CCM Concert Orchestra, and Student Choreographer’s Showcase. Holtsclaw continued to choreograph off campus and was conferred the 2019 Choreography Connection Award by Regional Dance America (RDA) for her original work staged at the 2019 National Choreography Intensive and is currently choreographing a new original work for Collin Ballet Company. Prior to attending CCM, she was a resident student of Bossov Ballet Theatre at Maine Central Institute, where she studied the Vaganova method and performed principal roles in , , The Ugly Duckling and .

Marsalis AnderSon-Clausell Marsalis Rene AnderSon-Clausell was raised in Roswell, Georgia. He trained in at Metropolitan Ballet Theatre (MBT) under the tutelage of Prima Ballerina Maniya Barredo. During his 10 seasons with MBT, he attended Orlando Ballet, Nashville Ballet, National Choreography Summer Intensives. In addition, Marsalis performed in and enjoyed time with Robert Barnett, Oliver Munoz, and the late John Magnus in original choreography for SERBA. With Ballet Pensacola, Marsalis had the privilege of performing Snow Pas; it was a dream come true. Marsalis is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics at the University of West Florida. This is his fourth season with Ballet Pensacola and his second season as a Principal Dancer.

14 Veronica Ramirez Casanova Veronica Ramirez was born in Cali, Colombia where she began dancing at the age of 10 at the Colombian Institute for Classical Ballet (INCOLBALLET). In 2007 she graduated as a professional ballet dancer and initiated her career at the Compañía Colombiana de Ballet where she danced for 10 years. During this time she has danced principal roles in Don Quixote, The Nutcracker, , Coppelia, Paquita, Carmina Burana, and many others. Ms. Ramirez has also danced modern and contemporary ballets with renowned choreographers such as Annabelle Lopez Ochoa and Jorge Amarante. Ms. Ramirez has done international tours in Mexico, El Salvador, Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Honduras. In 2017 she started working at the Compañía Colombiana de Danza Contemporánea as a ballet teacher. In 2018 she moved to Orlando, Florida where she joined Emotions Dance Company for two seasons. This is Veronica’s first season with Ballet Pensacola.

15 Ballet Pensacola Soloists

Madelynn Hampton Madelynn Hampton was born and raised in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she started her ballet training at Jefferson Ballet Theatre and studied privately with Kimberly Matulich-Beck. During her time there, she performed principal roles in Midsummer Night’s Dream, Alice in Wonderland, Coppelia, , and the Snow Queen. Ms. Hampton attended multiple summer intensives across the country, such as Theatre, International Ballet Competition, , Orlando Ballet, Kaatsbaan Ballet, , and most recently on scholarship. Upon graduation, she joined as a trainee and performed in many ballets, such as Swan Lake, ’s Moving Out, Paquita, and Les Patineurs. Madelynn also competed in the Youth American Grand Prix with Colorado Ballet, performing in the NYC finals and gala. She continued on to dance professionally with , where she performed Balanchine works and other ballets. Madelynn is also a certified Pilates instructor and is currently studying Kinesiology with a focus on exercise science.

Liz McGovern Liz McGovern hails from her native town of Columbus, OH. Training in classical ballet at Dublin Dance Centre from the age of 5, she studied under Martine Clark and Jaime Kotra-Wilson. During her time there, she attended summer intensives such as Cincinnati Ballet, Columbus City Ballet, , , and BalletMet. After graduating high school, she was accepted to the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, graduating in May 2020 summa cum laude with a BFA in Ballet. While there, she performed as the soloist in Roger Van Fleteren’s unRAVELed, the ensemble in Jose Limon’s A Choreographic Offering, the Principle Couple in Michael Tevlin’s Bridges, and the Orange Variation in Gerald Arpino’s Birthday Variations. During her senior year, she accepted a position as a trainee with Charlottesville Ballet, and finished her degree online. This is Ms. McGovern’s inaugural season with Ballet Pensacola.

16 Elizabeth Smith Elizabeth Smith was born and raised in Pensacola, Florida. She began dancing at the age of 3 and received the Ballet Pensacola’s Merit Scholarship Award for the 2018-2019 season. She has had the opportunity to perform as the “White Rabbit” in Alice and Wonderland and “Clara” in The Nutcracker. This is her debut season in Ballet Pensacola’s professional company.

Riley Engel Riley Engel has been a dancer at Ballet Pensacola for four years now and she is very excited for her fifth year in the trainee program. During her years here, she has been in many productions and some of her favorite roles have included Ballerina Doll in The Nutcracker, Baby Juliet in and Clara in The Nutcracker. This is Riley’s debut season with the professional company.

24 25 Ballet Pensacola’s Mission & Programs The Mission of Ballet Pensacola To enhance the cultural life of the community by developing an appreciation and knowledge of the art of dance through quality dance education and excellent performances.

The Gift of Dance Donations to Ballet Pensacola supports programs that bring world-class quality dance instruction and performance to the Pensacola area. Specifically, donations support the following programs and initiatives:

Ballet Pensacola’s Company Ballet Pensacola produces shows throughout the year, from traditional works like The Nutcracker to contemporary originals. The company features professional dancers recruited from around the world to live, train and perform in Pensacola. The company is supported by the top students of Ballet Pensacola’s Academy.

Discover Dance Program Ballet Pensacola transforms public elementary school gyms and cafeterias into performance space for the Discover Dance Program. These “lecture demonstrations” feature Ballet Pensacola’s professional dancers demonstrating classical ballet, modern movement.

Dance Chance Scholarships Ballet Pensacola offers over $10,000 in scholarship funding annually to deserving students in Ballet Pensacola’s Academy that would otherwise not be able to afford Academy tuition. The Academy is syllabus-driven and takes students through a graduated system of study encompassing classical ballet, contemporary movement and jazz techinque that demands further commitment and physicality as students progress.

Capstone Academy Partnership Ballet Pensacola provides dance instruction two times per week at Capstone Academy, a school serving students with developmental delays. The program has helped children make strides in their mobility and confidence. The program is offered free of charge to the school and their families.
