2015/16 About CashBack for Communities

CashBack for Communities is a Scottish Government programme which takes funds recovered from the proceeds of crime and invests them into free activities and programmes for young people across Scotland. Inspiring Scotland is the delivery partner for the CashBack for Communities programme, appointed in July 2012.

. CashBack invests monies seized from criminals under the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002 back into our communities. . Since 2008 the Scottish Government has committed £92 million to CashBack / community initiatives, funding community activities and facilities largely, but not exclusively, for young people. . CashBack supports all 32 Local Authorities across Scotland. . Sporting and recreational activities / culture / mentoring and employability / community projects. . CashBack has delivered nearly 2 million activities and opportunities for young people. . Phase 3 of CashBack runs to end March 2017 and is focused on positive outcomes for young people. CashBack for Communities: Aims

CashBack activities:

. Use the proceeds of crime in a positive way to expand young people’s horizons and increase their opportunities to develop their interests and skills in an enjoyable, fulfilling and supportive way. . Are open, where possible, to all children and young people, while focusing resources in those communities suffering most from antisocial behaviour and crime. . Seek to increase levels of participation to help divert young people away from ‘at risk’ behaviour, and will aim to increase the positive long-term outcomes for those who take part.

South Ayrshire – CashBack Outcomes: Case Studies

CashBack has made a huge difference to the lives of young people. We have captured information on individual case studies for CashBack partners which demonstrate the impact delivery activities have had to those participating. These can be accessed on the CashBack website at http://www.cashbackforcommunities.org/

Troon Youth Centre is an established youth group and a focus for young people in the area and has been part funded through the CashBack Small Grants Scheme. The CashBack grant was aimed at the P7 – S4 clubs. Young people reported how they ‘looked forward to being in P7 and getting to go to the youth groups’ and parents reported ‘It is the only thing in the area for young people’. The CashBack grant was used to support training weekends for young people to develop their committee skills and confidence, and to create opportunities for recognising young people’s achievements through for example an Annual Celebration and Burns Night Supper. The groups used Youth Scotland’s – Bored Meetings resource pack and involved older young people in training the younger new committee members. As a result of the commitment to getting young people actively involved in the youth group committees, young people have gone on to represent the group at the Community Council and the local Youth Forum.

basketballscotland, through the funding received from CashBack, have been able to support Ayr Storm, the local basketball club. Eight clubs across Scotland, including Ayr Storm, were able to participate in the Club Development programme by engaging with local primary schools to establish U12 sessions for both boys and girls at the clubs. This has resulted in over 26 schools being involved with the programme and pupils joining the club to ensure sustained participation in the sport. Taster sessions have been organised which has enabled a significant number of young people to try the sport who otherwise wouldn’t have.

This involved a one hour session weekly for 6 weeks and funding also allowed the club to provide schools with balls and other essential equipment. Over 400 pupils across 8 primary schools took part in the Future Starz programme. “CashBack has given us the opportunity to hit the ground running and given us an excellent start. We are very grateful for the support basketballscotland and CashBack has given so far” – Laura Nisbet, Coach at Ayr Storm.
