˾ THE MULHOUSE AREA August 2017 The Hartmannswillerkopf war museum

A strategic position at an altitude of 956 m, the Hartmannswillerkopf was the scene of furious battles which raged from 26 December 1914 to 9 January 1916. As one of the four national monuments to the Great War, the Crypt has undergone major restoration work and the battlefield can today be discovered thanks to the displays. The first Franco-German war museum for the Great War will be opening on 3 August 2017, with the first stones being laid on 3 August 2014 by the French and German presidents.

5<< Featuring a highly original design with an almond or leaf shape, the building currently under construction blends in seamlessly with the natural forest environment. A symbol of peace and reconciliation, this future war museum or "Historial" has a moving message for us all and will be a multifaceted facility fulfilling several roles including those of a historical, memorial and educational nature. It will provide an explanation of the Great War in the auditorium in addition to presenting maps and information about the belligerents worldwide and the regional flashpoints, the mountain war, the life experienced by a typical soldier, civilian life behind the front, an "archaeological trench" including objects from the site, ending with a visit to a memo- rial area featuring the theme of "From confrontation to cooperation", where a memorial tree will be located, on which visitors’ messages can be placed.

The commentary in French, German and English will be adapted to each audience, taking account of the different perceptions of the French and German visitors.

OPENING The Batorama shop > STRASBOURG

The Batorama concept was launched in 1937 with the acquisition of a Parisian "Bateau-Mouche" (riverboat) although the business was only launched in 1947 due to the war. Batorama manages all narrated tours of Strasbourg by boat on the river Ill. The route makes it possible to discover Strasbourg all year round via two circuits, "Grande Ile" and "20 siècles d’histoire" (20 years of history). This activity is Alsace’s leading paid attraction and France's 10th leading attraction overall.

A sales outlet recently opened in the centre of Stras- bourg, in Place de la Cathédrale. This offers three acti- vities: the reservations centre for travellers, the sale of tickets to private individuals and the sale of souvenirs. Automatic terminals available 24 hours a day enable you to buy your tickets, modify them and collect them if you have reserved them online.

OPENING July The Parlamentarium > STRASBOURG 2017

The construction work began in the Louise-Weiss building. Strasbourg is now getting a facility comparable to that available in Brussels since 2011 and situated close to the European Parliament in a different building, spanning 5,300 m², being admission-free, and open seven days a week. Strasbourg opted for the same name and the same 360° screen simulating a session, putting the visitor in the place of an MEP. This room will have a capacity of 50 places. The plans also include an area devoted to role-playing, an exhibition with touch screens and a wall featuring pictures of the MEPs. The complete visit will include the Parlamentarium, the hemicycle (in the visitors’ gallery) and the panoramic terrace. The aim is to increase visitor numbers from 170,000 to 300,000. This new facility will admirably complement tutions. Work will be carried out to landscape the Parc the permanent exhibition located just opposite, at the du Kaysersguet in which it is based. Between 1870 and 1945, the Alsatians and the Mosellans (the people born in the region) changed nationality four times, with the border region emerging as a source of tension and rivalry between France and Germany. The Alsace-Moselle memorial enables visitors to discover the history of the region from 1870 to the present day, experiencing all the atmosphere of life in a fortress on the Maginot Line. The memorial also offers an overview of the total destruction wrought by the Second World War, through to Franco-German re- conciliation and the reconstruction of Europe. This new phase in the work will examine the European aspect in greater depth, making a visit to this site the ideal complement to a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg (with train connections running between Mémorial de l’Alsace-Moselle Strasbourg and Schirmeck). The memorial will be Lieu-dit du Chauffour - 67130 SCHIRMECK closed from December 2016 onwards and off-site www.memorial-alsace-moselle.com events are planned for the duration of the work. >>8 ᕢ New facilities

˾ ACCOMMODATION & QUALITY RESTAURANTS(continued) James Boutique Hôtel > COLMAR

A warm and elegant family establishment just a two-minute walk from the historical town centre of Colmar, ideal for that perfect stay as a couple, as a family or for business. An emerging concept in the 80s in New York, the niche market for Boutique Hotels en- joyed a full-scale boom in the 90s. This is a very subjective concept, with no predefined plan or specifications. For the Americans, the notion of the "boutique" (a French word) stands in contrast to their huge "malls". In their eyes, a boutique is a small and attractive outlet proposing a personalised service in which the client becomes known and recognised during frequent visits. Hence the notion of a "boutique hotel", which has now found its place in the hotel world. Located in the centre of Colmar, the capital of the Alsatian wine trade, the hotel proposes a unique inter- active experience thanks to its 30 bedrooms & junior suites, designed with an eye for detail, to ensure maximum comfort for its guests.

New humanist library > SELESTAT

The well-known international architect Rudy Ricciotti (MuCEM of Marseille) was appointed for this project combining non-religious written heritage and avant- garde technology in a bright yet sober facility housed in the former 19th-century corn exchange. This library includes extraordinary antique books, including some 550 incunabula dating from the 15th century. The corn exchange will retain its impressive neo-Romanesque architecture but will be gaining brand new basements, a new plaza and a contemporary pink sandstone exten- sion to house the Café des Lettres. On the eastern and southern facades, a series of columns will make the most of the natural light and transparency effects. The reopening is planned for the spring of 2018. This project will involve the upgrading of the areas around the library, with the churches of Saint-Georges and Sainte-Foy, the Hôtel des Prélats d’ and the Maison du Pain.

Conversion of the former synagogue into archives >

Alsace is home to the highest density of Jewish heritage sites in Europe with no fewer than 200 sites, including synagogues, cemeteries, mikveh or museums and it is in Alsace that the European Days of Jewish Culture were launched and developed. This focus on Jewish heritage dates from the 1980s and today several restoration and conversion projects are underway at deconsecrated sites including among others the signature of the agreement between the Consistoire israélite du Bas-Rhin (the Jewish Consistory of the Lower Rhine) and the Fondation du Patrimoine (Heritage Foundation). Work is already underway in Wissembourg and includes the restoration of a synagogue and a 600 m² extension to house the town's AEA architectes archives and the storerooms for the Westercamp Heritage Museum. The synagogue will house offices and a consultation area. Opening is scheduled for 2018.
