1 CHEM 30A EXPERIMENT 5: MOLAR VOLUME OF A GAS (MG + HCL) Learning Outcomes Upon completion of this lab, the student will be able to: 1) Demonstrate a single replacement reaction. 2) Calculate the molar volume of a gas at STP using experimental data. 3) Calculate the molar mass of a metal using experimental data. Introduction Metals that are above hydrogen in the activity series will displace hydrogen from an acid and produce hydrogen gas. Magnesium is an example of a metal that is more active than hydrogen in the activity series. The reaction between magnesium metal and aqueous hydrochloric acid is an example of a single replacement reaction (a type of redox reaction). The chemical equation for this reaction is shown below: Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) è MgCl2(aq) + H2(g) Equation 1 When the reaction between the metal and the acid is conducted in a eudiometer, the volume of the hydrogen gas produced can be easily determined. In the experiment described below magnesium metal will be reacted with an excess of hydrochloric acid and the volume of hydrogen gas produced at the experimental conditions will be determined. According to Avogadro’s law, the volume of one mole of any gas at Standard Temperature and Pressure (STP = 273 K and 1 atm) is 22.4 L. Two important Gas Laws are required in order to convert the experimentally determined volume of hydrogen gas to that at STP. 1. Dalton’s law of partial pressures. 2. Combined gas law. Dalton’s Law of Partial Pressures According to Dalton’s law of partial pressures in a mixture of non-reacting gases, the total pressure exerted is equal to the sum of the partial pressures of the individual gases. -

EARTH SCIENCE ACTIVITY #1 Grades 3 and Up Tsunami in a Bottle This activity is one of several in a basic curriculum designed to increase student knowledge about earthquake science and preparedness. The activities can be done at any time in the weeks leading up to the ShakeOut drill. Each activity can be used in classrooms, museums, and other educational settings. They are not sequence-bound, but when used together they provide an overview of earthquake information for children and students of various ages. All activities can be found at www.shakeout.org/schools/resources/. Please review the content background (page 3) to gain a full understanding of the material conducted in this activity. OBJECTIVE: For students to learn that tsunamis can be caused by earthquakes and to understand the effects of tsunamis on the shoreline MATERIALS/RESOURCES NEEDED: 2-liter plastic soda bottles Small gravel (fish tank gravel) Water source Empty water bottle (16 oz) Overhead projector Transparency of Tsunami Facts “What Do I See?” handout PRIOR KNOWLEDGE: In order to conduct this activity, students need to know how fault slippage can generate earthquakes. ACTIVITY: Set-Up (Time varies) Collect as many 2-liter soda bottles as possible or ask students to bring in bottles for this activity (3 students can share one bottle). Obtain an empty water bottle (about 16 oz). Remove labels from all bottles. Purchase or gather enough small gravel to fit through the mouth of the soda bottles. Students will fill up their soda bottles with gravel to create at least a 2 inch layer on the bottom of the bottle. -

Proper Use of a Bunsen Burner If using a Bunsen burner in a biological safety cabinet, see: http://research.wayne.edu/oehs/pdf/gas-in-bsc.pdf Prior to Lighting Bunsen Burner: • Know the location of the laboratory’s main gas shut off valve and fire extinguisher. • Place the Bunsen burner away from any overhead shelving, equipment, or light fixtures by at least 12 inches. • Remove all papers, notebooks, combustible materials, and excess chemicals from the area. • Tie-back any long hair, dangling jewelry, or loose clothing. • Use correct tubing (butyl rubber hose). Inspect hose for cracks, holes, pinch points, or any defect and replace if necessary. Ensure that the hose fits securely on the gas valve and the burner. • Notify others in the lab that the burner will be in use. Lighting Bunsen Burner: • Before turning on gas, have a sparker/lighter with extended nozzle to ignite burner. Never use matches. • Check connections to burner and desk outlet valve. • Close needle valve and collar. • Open gas valve fully. • Open needle valve 1/2 turn. • Use the spark/lighter to light the flame. • Adjust flame by turning the collar to regulate air flow and produce an appropriate flame for the experiment (typically a medium blue flame). During Use: • Never leave a lighted burner unattended. Drafts (including those created by a hood) may extinguish the flame, but the gas will still be on. This could result in an explosion. • Never face the vessel (test tube, beaker, etc.) being used to heat a material toward yourself or others near the burner. In some experiments, a hot plate may be used in place of the Bunsen burner. -

According to the chemical composition of calcium cored wire and the chemical property of the active calcium in it, the gas volumetric method has been established for the determination of calcium content in calcium cored wire and a set of analysis device is also designed. Sampling in the air directly, intercepting the inner filling material of samples, reacting with water for 10 min, using standard comparison method and then the accurate calcium content can be available. The recovery rate of the experimental method was 93-100 %, the standard deviation is less than 0.4 %.
