Devotion to the of Jesus & the

This past Friday and Saturday, June 19 & 20, the Church celebrated the Feasts of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Im- maculate Heart of Mary.

DEVOTION to the SACRED HEART of JESUS began when Jesus’ Heart was pierced with the soldier’s lance after He died on the Cross (John’s Gospel, ch. 19). This devotion spread in the centuries that followed, and spread widely after Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary at the Visitation Convent in Paray le Monial, France in the 1670’s and re- vealed to her that He desires devotion to His Sacred Heart, which is the preeminent Symbol of His divine and human love. Jesus revealed to her that He wants reparation made to His Heart for the coldness, indifference and neglect shown toward His Heart which is present in the Holy Eucharist – acts of reparation in the form of , and reception of Holy Communion (especially on First Fridays) with the intention of making reparation to the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus.

Jesus made 12 promises to St. Margaret Mary for those who practice devotion to His Sacred Heart:

1. I will give them all the graces necessary for their state of life. 2. I will establish peace in their families. 3. I will bless every house in which the picture of My Heart shall be exposed and honored. 4. I will console them in all their difficulties. 5. I will be their refuge during life and especially at the hour of death. 6. I will shed abundant blessings upon all their undertakings. 7. Sinners shall find in My Heart a fountain and boundless ocean of mercy. 8. Tepid souls shall become fervent. 9. Fervent souls shall rise speedily to great perfection. 10. I will give to the power of touching the hardest hearts. 11. Those who propagate this devotion shall have their names written in My Heart never to be blotted out. 12. I promise thee, in the excessive mercy of My Heart, that My all powerful love will grant to all who communicate on the First Friday of the month for nine consecutive months, the grace of final penitence; they shall not die in My displeasure nor without their sacraments: My Divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in this last moment.

DEVOTION to the IMMACULATE HEART of MARY began in the early Church with St. Luke’s Gospel: “Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Lk. 2:16). Devotion to Mary’s Heart deepened and spread through- out the centuries, but was strengthened after Our Lady’s apparitions at Fatima, Portugal in 1917, when Mary asked for devotion to her Immaculate Heart to complement devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. At Fatima, Mary specifically asked for reception of Holy Communion on First Saturdays of every month in reparation for sins which offend her Im- maculate Heart (which also offend the Sacred Heart of Jesus); and she made a promise similar to that made by Jesus about receiving Holy Communion on nine First Fridays: On Dec. 10, 1925 Our Lady told Sister Lucia: “I promise to assist at the moment of death, with all the graces necessary for salvation, all those who, on the first Saturday of five consecutive months shall confess, receive Holy Communion, recite five decades of the , and keep Me com- pany for fifteen minutes while meditating on the fifteen mysteries of the Rosary, with the intention of making repa- ration to me.”

Home Enthronement of the Sacred Heart of Jesus & the Immaculate Heart of Mary Enthronement is an apostolate to establish the Social Reign of the Sacred Heart in society through the family, society’s fun- damental cell. Christ’s reign is a reign of love, of which His Heart is the preeminent Symbol. Enthronement brings Christ’s reign to the family with a ceremony that solemnly acknowledges that Jesus as King and Master of the home. This is done by placing an image of the Sacred Heart in the principal room of the home, along with an image of the Heart of Mary, for she is Queen and reigns with Him. Family members then consecrate themselves to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. If you want to have the Enthronement done in your home, just call the rectory.
