Rajiv Malhotra : Indra's Net before purchasing it in order to gage whether or not it would be worth my time, and all praised Indra's Net:

Ron GardnerI was inititially attracted to this book because I recently began working on a Buddadharma text and need to bone up on Indra's Net because of its central role in Hua Yen Buddhism. I wanted to get a nuanced Hindu perspective-- with , and not emptiness, as the noumenal foundation of the Net--and this book provided it, to a limited extent. However, because this book is essentially about "defending 's philosophical unity," it did not deeply consider the Vedic view of Indra's Net versus the Buddhist. What this book does deeply consider, however, is how modern and post-modern intellectual forces in the West are conspiring to de-legitimize Hinduism as a genuine and coherent . And according to Malhotra, the reason they do this is "to protect Western hegemony." These forces, he says, have an academic and political agenda which is best served by depicting Hinduism as a "random juxtaposition of incoherent and fragmented traditions." By undermining any idea of coherency in Indian civilization, these forces in effect champion Western supremacy. As Malhotra puts it, "In the intellectual kurukshetra of globalization, civilizations compete to gain `mindshare.'"Malhotra has little regard for the prevalent Western ethos or "mindset" that is behind the attack on a legitimate Hinduism. He views the West as representing "brute-force reduction of diversity into homogenity, where diverse living substances are transformed into uniformly lifeless ashes." The West, as he sees it, is about normative order rather than profound, variegated culture.According to Malhotra (who uses the term "neo" in a disparaging sense, as a synonym for "pseudo"), the thesis of the neo-Hinduism forces looking to subvert Hinduism can be summarized thus:1) manufactured a new religion, popularly called Hinduism, and other Indian nationalists such as Gandhi, Radhakrihnan, Rabindranath Tagore, and subsequently crystallized it.2) The was not a central text until Western Indologists made it important.3) Christian ideals of helping society and Western secular theories of social ethics inspired Indian nationalists appropriate them; was used merely as a garb to make the plagiarized ideas look Hindu.4) Hinduism is inherently oppressive of minorities such as Muslims, Christians, , and women. It forces others into its own homogeneity for gaining political control. is its latest incarnation and its goal has been to impose homogeneity.5) Hinduism is a dangerous conspiracy that is being spread worldwide by duping naiuml;ve Westerners into thinking that it is a genuine tradition of peace and equality, which it is not.Malhotra provides an in-depth counter-thesis to the neo-Hindu thesis, and anyone interested in the debate between these two diametrically opposed theses will doubtless find this book a compelling read.Who exactly are the founders and proselytizers of the neo-Hinduism thesis? Malhotra identifies them, providing about twenty names. Most of these people are academics with an agenda, and once you have their names, you can, if you're so inclined, find and read what they've written on the subject.Malhotra is a genuine scholar, and in the course of elaborating his thesis, he provides interesting material on the spiritual history of . He's clearly a big fan of Swami Vivekananda, and presents arguments to defend him against his detractors. He also has a lot to say about Shankara, which should be of interest to students of Advaita .While I found this text an interesting and educational read, I felt that it didn't identify the "disease" that is causing the "symptom" of neo-Hinduism. Although the text properly identifies the agenda and limitations of the modern Western Weltanschauung; it fails to get to the root of the problem: Progressivism, left-wing neo-Marxist fascism, an ideology coincident with America being hijacked and effectively privatized by a private, central Banking Cartel in 1913. This private Banking Cartel named itself The Federal Reserve, but it is not Federal at all, and neither is its collection agency, the Internal Revenue Service. In the twentieth century, Progressivism took over the American educational system, and 94% of all university professors now identify themselves as Progressives, or left-wing liberals. In short, it is this cancerous Progressivism, being peddled around the world as "Integral Globalism" by the likes of , which is overtly and covertly waging war on Hinduism and any ideology anathema to its hegemony. In summary, this text is provocative and worth reading, but it is also perimetric because it doesn't identify the "Heart of the Beast" seeking to de-legitimize Hinduism--Progressivism.10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Much needed Porcupine Defense and Poison PillsBy RBKIndra's Net:Defending Hinduism's Philosophical Unity is a perfect sequel to :An Indian Challenge to Western . This is a very important book for the present day and at the end gives the much needed poison pills and porcupine quills for 's self-defense.The metaphor of Indra's net is used to show the integral organic unity of Dharmic civilization(which includes Hinduism, Buddhism and other Indic traditions). The book is divided into two parts - Purva Paksha, explaining the opponents view that contemporary Hinduism is a sham and Utra Paksha which effectively rebuts that view by showing continuity from ancient to contemporary Hinduism. The Neo-Hinduism thesis which aims at illegitimizing Hinduism, unsurprisingly has it's origins from Christian missionaries which was then spearheaded by Paul Hacker. Then it travelled through Agehananda Bharati, Wilhelm Halbfass, Ursula King who is an Anglican Minister and through her to . This dangerous thesis is then picked up by Indian Marxists like Romila Thappar Meera Nanda and makes its way into Indian mainstream thus duping many innocent .A major claim of the Neo-Hinduism thesis is that Hinduism is an `invention' of Swami Vivekananda who invented it for political gains. 's teachings are used to shoot down Vivekananda as being illegitimate and Vivekananda is blamed to have taken Western Christian ethics and imported it into India as Karma Yoga and Seva(service). In fact it was the other way around. Vivekananda's ideas were appropriated by the west.Hinduism studies is probably the only field where outsiders are the so called experts. Hence there is a tendency to map and reduce Hinduism onto Judeo-Christian categories. For example, Adi Shankara's teachings are elevated to canonical commandments which cannot be extended and are final. In reality, Advaita was not Adi Shankara's teaching alone. He played a significant part but it existed before him in some form and continued to grow after him. Another reduction is that is the only ultimate aim of all Hindus like how is the ultimate aim of Christians. But not all Hindus are interested in Moksha and the 'Open Architecture' of Dharma also caters to their needs. This reduction is further used to shoot down Vivekananda who emphasized more on yoga. The book goes into a bit deeper into the Philosophies of Adi Shankara and also cites examples of continuity in tradition by examining Vijnanabhiksu whose works were the prototype of the unified hinduism resembling contemporary Hinduism.Going into the Philosophical depths is a great eye opener for lay Hindus and prepares the readers for the poison pills which are discussed at the end. Reading the book `Being Different' would help the reader understand better the reasons for choosing certain aspects of Dharma as poison pills. This, in my opinion is the most important contribution of this book. Being Different and set up the stage by doing a Poorva Paksha on the west's theology and exposing the nature threats faced by Dharma and India. This books tries to give ways to prevent the annihilation of the Dharmic civilization and it's Open Architecture.5 of 6 people found the following review helpful. For most i think if you have read Being different than it is probably a good idea to stop there but if you love everything ...By AvineshThis book is a continuation from Being Different and at times a bit tough going. Occasionally it is a repetition but still very engaging. For most i think if you have read Being different than it is probably a good idea to stop there but if you love everything Indian and Hindu and want know more than this is certainly for you.I certainly think that most people around the world for most do not have much insight into their belief systems including its history and philosophy. A lot of beliefs for most people are blind beliefs and childish. I think Rajiv has done a great job to emphasize how Hinduism is different from Christianity and in that way brings forth some interesting insights to Hinduism itself, things we take for granted but not really think about. His insights may or may not be completely accurate hence the need to have open mind and to review other materials and have discussions. Hinduism is a very big umbrella for some similar and some very different belief systems. It can be adapted to almost anything you want. Over time most things undergo a change and so has Hindu beliefs, from Vedic ritualism to Buddhist philosophy to revival of vedic beliefs and Vedanta.Even in modern times there are so many commentaries on major and religions. Each may be slightly different from one another and since not many have met and like the seven blind men, they each have their own unique point of view.Remember that religion is not an end in itself, it is a means to an end and when you find the absolute you have no further need for religion. As in the , God is one, the sages call it by many names. There are many paths to the top of the mountain.

It is fashionable among intellectuals to assert that dharma traditions lacked any semblance of unity before the British period, and that the contours of contemporary Hinduism were bequeathed to us by our colonial masters. Such arguments routinely target Swami Vivekananda, a key interlocutor who shattered many deeply rooted prejudices against Indian civilization. They accuse him of having camouflaged various alleged 'contradictions' within traditional Hinduism, and charge him with having appropriated the principles of Western religion to 'manufacture' a unified world view and a set of practices known today as Hinduism. Rajiv Malhotra offers a systematic rejoinder to such views and articulates the holographic understanding of reality that grounds Hindu dharma.
