A poem, compared with an arrayed religion, may be like a soldier’s one short marriage night to die and live by. But that is a small religion. Full religion is the large poem in loving repetition; like any poem, it must be inexhaustible and complete with turns where we ask Now why did the poet do that? You can’t pray a lie, said Huckleberry Finn; you can’t poe one either. It is the same mirror: mobile, glancing, we call it poetry, fixed centrally, we call it religion, and God is the poetry caught in any religion, caught, not imprisoned. Es ist derselbe Spiegel: beweglich, aufblitzend nennen wir es Dichtung, um eine Mitte verankert nennen wir es eine Religion, und Gott ist die Dichtung, die in jeder Religion gefangen wird, gefangen, nicht eingesperrt. Gefangen wie in einem Spiegel, den er anzog, da er in der Welt ist, wie die Poesie im Gedicht ist, ein Gesetz gegen jeden Abschluß. De samordnar vårt dagljusjag och vårt drömjag, våra känslor, instinkter, andetag och medfödda gester. till ett enda helt tänkande: poesin. Ingenting är sagt förrän det har drömts i ord och ingenting är sant som enbart klätts i ord. Jämfört med en ordnad religion är en dikt att likna vid en soldats enda kort bröllopsnatt att och leva genom. Men det är en liten religion. En hel religion är en väldig dikt som ömt upprepas; som varje annan dikt är den självklart outtömlig och full av vändningar där vi frågar Varför gör nu diktaren så här? Man inte be en lögn, sade Huckleberry Finn; man kan inte dikta den heller. Spegeln är en och densamma: rör den sig och glimmar, kallar vi den poesi, hänger den som fixpunkt kallar vi den religion, och Gud är den poesi som fångas i all religion, fångas, inte fängslas. Oktober 1938 auf einer Milchfarm in Nabaic, im Bunyah, New South Wales, Australien geboren. Bunyah ist weniger ein Dorf als ein Tal mit ein paar verstreuten Farmen und liegt etwa 250 Kilometer nördlich von Sydney in suptropischer Region. Es wurde 1870 von Murrays schottischen Vorfahren besiedelt. Als junger Mann verläßt Les Murray 1957 seine Heimat, um in Sydney zu studieren (Sprachen, u.a. Deutsch). Aufgewachsen in Gemeindestrukturen, die dem 19. Jahrhundert entstammen, erfährt das großstädtische Leben Sydneys als einen Kulturschock, der bis heute eine wichtige Rolle in seiner Poesie spielt. Nach seinem Abschluß arbeitet er einige Jahre lang als Übersetzer westeuropäischer Sprachen an der Australian National University Canberra (1963-67), reist ausgiebig und zieht dann mit seiner Frau Valerie, mit der er seit 1962 verheiratet ist, und seinen fünf Kindern wieder nach Sydney. Ab 1974 lebt Murray, der sich gern als „Headfarmer“ bezeichnet dort als freier Schriftsteller. Von 1973 bis 1979 ist Murray Herausgeber der Zeitschrift Poetry Australia und von 1976 bis 1991 Lyriklektor im Verlag Angus & Robertson. 1986 kehrt er mit seiner Frau und seinen beiden jüngsten Kindern endgültig nach Bunyah zurück, das er seit 1975 in Teilen zurückkaufen konnte. 1996 erleidet er eine Leber-Infektion, die ihn fast das Leben kostet. We are not great fans of "selected" editions of poets, rarely trusting those who cull the poems (even when that is done by the poets themselves). Murray is also among those poets whose work is less amenable to being torn apart and stuck back together again, as there is generally a design and coherence to the individual collections that gets lost when it is re-presented piecemeal: obvious examples in this selection include the missing months of "The Idyll Wheel" and many of the "Translations from a Natural World", reduced to a few here. Still, Learning Human can stand as an introduction and overview of much of Murray's work. (There is, understandably, nothing here from the two verse novel-sequences, The Boys who Stole the Funeral and Fredy Neptune .) There is a good deal here that is striking and impresses, and one gets a good sense of Murray's many talents. The variety of poems is surprising: Murray handles a number of styles, subjects, and approaches equally well. There are poems that delight in language and sound, from simple descriptions as in "Wagtail":
