The Battles of Germantown: Public History and Preservation in America’s Most Historic Neighborhood During the Twentieth Century Dissertation Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By David W. Young 2009 Abstract This dissertation examines how public history and historic preservation have changed during the twentieth century by examining the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Founded in 1683, Germantown is one of America’s most historic neighborhoods, with resonant landmarks related to the nation’s political, military, industrial, and cultural history. Efforts to preserve the historic sites of the neighborhood have resulted in the presence of fourteen historic sites and house museums, including sites owned by the National Park Service, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the City of Philadelphia. Germantown is also a neighborhood where many of the ills that came to beset many American cities in the twentieth century are easy to spot. The 2000 census showed that one quarter of its citizens live at or below the poverty line. Germantown High School recently made national headlines when students there attacked a popular teacher, causing severe injuries. Many businesses and landmark buildings now stand shuttered in community that no longer can draw on the manufacturing or retail economy it once did. Germantown’s twentieth century has seen remarkably creative approaches to contemporary problems using historic preservation at their core. -

It focuses on four major ethnic groups: African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino Americans, and Native Americans. Within each category a distinction is made between those works with an authentic voice and those with a realistic voice. An authentic voice is an author or illustrator who is from the particular ethnic group and brings expertise and life experience to his/her writings or illustrations. A realistic voice is that of an author or illustrator whose work is from outside that experience, but with valuable observations. An asterisk notes the distinction. No distinction is drawn between juvenile literature and adult literature. The decision is left to the reader to make the choices, because some adult literature may contain selections appropriate to children. Elizabeth George Speare Elizabeth George Speare Biography Elizabeth George Speare is on the list of America’s one hundred most popular children’s authors, and she has won many awards, including two Newbery Medals, the most prestigious prize given to children’s literature. It would not be an exaggeration to say that almost every child in America will read one of her books before graduating from high school. Speare's stellar career as a writer, however, almost didn’t happen. Though she wrote a good deal as a child, she stopped for many years and focused her energy and attention on her family. Speare didn’t start writing commercially until she was in her forties and her children were in their early teens. Like her most famous work, The Witch of Blackbird Pond, many of her stories are set in New England and focus on young people who are at a critical turning point in their lives. Facts and Trivia Speare grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts. As a young child, she had a cousin who also loved to write. At family gatherings, they would read each other their latest stories. This practice continued throughout their college years. Speare’s novel Calico Captive was inspired by a journal she found written by Susanna Johnson, dated 1807. The diary told the story of the Johnson family’s kidnapping by Indians. In a famous acceptance speech for one of her Newbery Medals, she said, “I believe that all of us who are concerned with children are committed to the salvaging of love and honor and duty.” Although Speare often wrote about colonial life in America, her novel The Bronze Bow takes place during the time of Jesus. -

THE KERLAN COLLECTION Children’s Literature Research Collections FALL 2017 NEWSLETTER | CO-SPONSORED BY THE KERLAN FRIENDS AND THE CLRC Children’s Book Art: Techniques and Media Children’s Book Art: Techniques and Media is the newest digital asset from the Children’s Literature Research Collections’ digital exhibits project (see sidebar on page 4). This exhibit will showcase art from within the Kerlan Collection, and provide an invaluable resource for students and members of the public who are interested in exploring the world of illustration through the artistic techniques employed by the country’s most popular illustrators. The Kerlan Collection at the University of Minnesota Archives and Special Collections is one of the leading repositories of rare books, process art, and manuscripts of children’s literature. The collections range from rare volumes of Mother Goose from the 1800s to contemporary creators like Jane Yolen, Sharon Creech, Christopher Paul Curtis, and Melissa Sweet.
