(Photo © Anna Arca) 7 JERWOOD/PHOTOWORKS AWARDS 2015 TEACHERS RESOURCE THE ARTISTS: TEREZA ZELENKOVA Tereza Zelenkova has travelled to her native Czech Republic to explore history, local legend and folklore. The eerily beautiful, black and white photographs of woodlands, stone structures and relics are described as dream- like, a coming together of subjective and subconscious associations. Whether by chance or intention, her personal relationship to the place also informs and inspires the images. Personal narrative and cultural myth are implied through the places, scenes and artefacts she photographs but the stories remain untold. I hope to create a portrayal of my home country that reflects its rich history, which I believe is imbued with elements of darkness and melancholy, occasionally seeping to the surface through dark fairytales, forgotten biographies, local histories and superstitions. There are many places and stories, which I think deserve to be documented, preserving something from their individual genius loci through photographs that not only describe and translate, but also enhance the poetics of a place. Tereza Zelenkova, Elizabeth Bathory’s Bedroom, ˆ Cachtice Castle, 2015 Tereza Zelenkova (b.1985, Czech Republic) received an MA in Photography from the RCA in 2012 and was shortlisted for Saatchi New Sensations in the same year. Tereza has several self-published books, The Absense of Myth, was selected as one of the best black and white photobooks of 2013 by The Telegraph. terezazelenkova.com photoworks.org.uk/showcase-tereza-zelenkova/ photoworks.org.uk/interview- jerwoodphotoworks-awardee-tereza-zelenkova/ 8 JERWOOD/PHOTOWORKS AWARDS 2015 TEACHERS RESOURCE THE ARTISTS: MATTHEW FINN Matthew Finn has been photographing his mother since 1987. He describes the work as an on-going collaboration. His mother actively participates in some of the portraits but at other times seems more of an observed subject, oblivious to the camera. Sometimes the images shift towards using objects as metaphor and the photographer himself occasionally appears in the image in a reflection. The psyche and perceptions of both subject and photographer are at play here, their intimate relationship key to the work. I am drawn to projects that have direct reference to my life and the people in it. I am interested in people and events that surround me, these become my visual references for projects that may take years to realise. I am drawn to people both as individuals and as types to explore and get to know through picture making. Through close visual analyses of photojournalist, press, and social documentary photographs, this Ph.D examines the visual responses to the Government’s advocation of a ‘healthy’ society and its programme of social and economic ‘waste-saving’. Drawing Imogen Tyler’s interpretation of ‘social abjection’ (the discursive mediation of subjects through exclusionary modes of ‘revolting aesthetics’) into the visual field, this Ph.D explores photography’s implication in bolstering the abject and exclusionary discourses of the era. Exploring the contexts in which photographs were created, utilised and disseminated to visually convey ‘waste’ as an expression of social abjection, this Ph.D exposes how the Right’s successful establishment of a neoliberal political economy was supported by an accelerated use and deployment of revolting photographic aesthetics.

    Fieldwork: photographs of Britain 1971-1988 by Daniel Meadows curated by Val Williams Fieldwork: photographs of Britain 1971-1988 by Daniel Meadows curated by Val Williams Daniel Meadows and Val Williams have been working together for the last two years on an exploration of the Meadows archive of negatives, prints, digital stories and papers, which is housed in Monmouth. A book resulting from the research will be published by Photoworks in 2011 and it is planned that a touring exhibition with several UK and, possibly, international venues, will launch to coincide with the publication. A series of research seminars have been held around the project, with participants including Val Williams (Photography and the Archive Research Centre, London College of Communication); Daniel Meadows (Cardiff University); Peter James (Birmingham Central Library); Paul Reas (University of Wales, Newport); Russell Roberts (University of Wales, Newport); Fotonow (Plymouth); John Myers (photographer); Birmingham Central Library Archivists, plus project interns. I mentioned the details of his book in our first Contemporary Group online newsletter which was launched in June. The E-News is a way of informing you of things which may not find their way into the Contemporary Journal, either through lack of space or because the timing is wrong. It will also be possible to promote members exhibitions, gallery exhibitions, books of interest or Regional events. Please let me know if you have anything of interest that you would like others to know about, or if you have any suggestions which may improve it. It will be sent out mid-way between the Journals and the next one should appear during the second week in September. There are proposals for a Yorkshire/North-East Group; there was considerable interest shown for this at the Contemporary Group meeting in April in Bradford.     Impact case study (REF3b Institution: UNIVERSITY OF THE ARTS LONDON Unit of Assessment: 34 Title of case study: Photography and the Archive Research Centre (PARC) at the University of the Arts London 1. Summary of the impact Researchers at the Photography and the Archive Research Centre (PARC) study the practice and products of photography in terms of both artistic importance and social relevance, recognising photography’s many roles including its presence in: the art world; reportage; autobiographical practice; and in social and political education. This case study demonstrates PARC’s impact on cultural life via the production of work and curatorial practice, bringing new insights, challenging assumptions, and raising awareness of the role of photographic practice in the public realm. 2. Underpinning research The Centre’s underpinning research is represented by work undertaken at UAL by Professors Val Williams (PARC Director) and Tom Hunter, Brigitte Lardinois (PARC Deputy Director), Jananne Al- Ani (Research Fellow), and Paul Lowe (Course Director, MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography). Shared research strands include: the history and culture of photography; photojournalism; the documentation of war and conflict; visualization of under-represented groups and issues; social and political relevance of photography; and an exploration of the boundaries between documentation and fiction. Williams’ work on the history and practice of photography in Britain has exposed previously under researched histories. Martin Parr: Photographic Works, Barbican (2002) was the first exhibition to assess Parr’s photographs as a complete body of work. It was threaded with a detailed narrative of Parr’s personal and professional history and set within the broader context of British post-1970 photography.

Exhibitions and events organised by the Print Sales, the Education Department and the Digital Programme (Wall) are included.   • Introduction
    Introduction Martin Parr is a chronicler of our age. In the face of the constantly growing flood of images released by the media, his photographs offer us the opportunity to see the world from his unique perspective. At first glance, his photographs seem exaggerated or even grotesque. The motifs he chooses are strange, the colours are garish and the perspectives are unusual. Parr's term for the overwhelming power of published images is "propaganda". He counters this propaganda with his own chosen weapons: criticism, seduction and humour. As a result, his photographs are original and entertaining, accessible and understandable. But at the same time they show us in a penetrating way that we live, how we present ourselves to others, and what we value. Leisure, consumption and communication are the concepts that this British photographer has been researching for several decades now on his worldwide travels. In the process, he examines national characteristics and international phenomena to find out how valid they are as symbols that will help future generations to understand our cultural peculiarities. Parr enables us to see things that have seemed familiar to us in a completely new way. In this way he creates his own image of society, which allows us to combine an analysis of the visible signs of globalisation with unusual visual experiences. In his photos, Parr juxtaposes specific images with universal ones without resolving the contradictions. Individual characteristics are accepted and eccentricities are treasured. The themes Parr selects and his inimitable treatment of them set him apart as a photographer whose work involves the creation of extensive series.
