INVESTORS.COM POWERED BY INVESTOR’S BUSINESS DAILY Leaders & Success Auto Racer Mario Andretti Dreamed Big And Charged Hard By SONJA CARBERRY, FOR INVESTOR'S BUSINESS DAILY Posted 01:29 PM ET 4/20/12 As a race car driver, Mario Andretti was inexhaustible. "I was never getting enough," he told IBD. "I felt there weren't enough races. If I had a weekend off, I would book something else." Talk about an adrenaline-fueled schedule. Andretti uniquely captured the trio of the Daytona 500, Indianapolis 500 and Formula One world title. AFP/Getty Images Days after finessing his Formula One car around the 2.6-mile track in Buenos Aires, Argentina, he'd duel on dirt at a sprint car race in Du Quoin, Ill. Each event offered a different spin on competition, new insights into driving and the all- important checkered flag. "I wasn't gallivanting to other disciplines just to be there," he said. "I wanted to win. Then, mission accomplished." Such hot pursuit yielded versatility. Sweep Andretti's Keys • Auto racing champion. • Overcame: Being a WWII refugee and starting from zero in America. • Lesson: Harness your drive, grab each opportunity and learn at every turn. • "I value individuals who are goal-oriented. You have to formulate something you want to achieve. Then it's all about perseverance." Andretti is the only driver to clench this trio: Daytona 500 winner (1967), Indianapolis 500 victor (1969) and Formula One world champion (1978). Add longevity — Andretti's professional career spanned 31 years — and the honors pile up: Four-time IndyCar champion ('65, '66, '69, '84).

This year will mark the Firestone brand’s 67th Indy 500 victory. Firestone has more Indy 500 wins than all other tire manufacturers combined. CAN HINCH GO FROM THE POLE TO VICTORY LANE: James Hinchcliffe wrote the latest chapter of his comeback story when he scored the pole for the 100th Indianapolis 500 last weekend. History will be on his side this weekend as the Indy 500 pole has gone on to win the race 20 times. Forty-three times, the winner has come from the front row, the last time in 2010 with Dario Franchitti. Will Hinch covert his Verizon P1 Award into the Borg-Warner Trophy? Chris Jones/IMS Photo WHAT TO WATCH FOR THIS MONTH: IT’S NOT WHERE YOU START…: The last four Indianapolis 500 winners have started outside the top 10, including Juan Pablo Montoya, who came from 15th to win in 2015. With depth throughout the 33-car field for the Indy 500, including former winners Montoya, Scott Dixon and Tony Kanaan starting from the fifth row or further back, can another star drive through the field to win the race? SECOND-GENERATION STARS HOPE TO ADD TO FAMILY LEGACY: The latest generation from two of open-wheel racing’s most familiar families comes to Indianapolis in hopes of adding to the family legacy. Marco Andretti—the grandson of 1969 winner Mario Andretti and son of Michael Andretti—has finished in the top three at Indy three times in his nine previous starts. He hopes to give his father’s team its fourth Indianapolis 500 win.

  • Than 27 Years of Helping Sick Children Through Motorsports
More than 27 Years of Helping Sick Children Through Motorsports The Program The Team Fast Facts Media Coverage Photos - Special Events www.racingforkids.org The Program Racing For Kids® is a unique national charity, which uses the popularity of motorsports to bring attention and funding to the health care needs of children and child health institutions. At the heart of the program are visits to Children’s Hospitals by the Racing For Kids drivers in the cities where they race. The drivers spend time with each sick child, sharing stories about their racing careers, signing autographs and giving out the popular Racing For Kids hats. For many hospitalized youngsters, these visits by the racers are the lone bright spot in what is often a rather gloomy experience. Attending physicians report that these visits play an important part in each child’s recovery therapy. Racing For Kids representatives have visited close to 30,000 sick children in more than 575 hospital visits in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and Australia. Another important aspect of the Racing For Kids program is the funding that has been raised for Children’s Hospitals across the country. Since its founding in Detroit in 1989, Racing For Kids has raised more than $6.5 million through donations, specific fund raising events and in-kind gifts. Major sponsors of Racing For Kids include Humana, Inc., Bridgestone Firestone Trust Fund, TranSystems, Meridian Health Plan of Michigan, Benson Ford, Jr. and Douglas E. Fregin. Toyota Motorsports and The Grand Prix Foundation of Long Beach have made Racing For Kids a major charity of The Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach.

And the quartet of Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick and Brad Keselows- ki gave it their all during the 267-lap season finale much to the delight of the sold-out grandstand and a national television audience.
