Objective: To discuss the procedures for a virgin sodium hydroxide relaxer

Equipment Needed; spatula, cond.(mock relaxer),base cream (vaseline), shampoo, conditioner, bowl, applicator brush, shampoo cape, 5 towels, 4 plastic clips, 2 combs, 2 rattail combs, spray bottle,(with water) gloves, timer, mannequin head, stand

Learning motivation; To discuss how you can transform curly hair to straight and give your client a whole new and exciting look.

Activities for lesson; 1. prep. Wash hands with hot soapy water 2. analysis of hair and scalp porosity and elasticity, to check for porosity you need to run your fingers down the hair and to check for elasticity stretch the hair, it should stretch up to 50%. For a strand test take hair in the back of the neck 1/2 inch by ½ inch and apply product. 3. Complete consultation 4. Change into gown, remove glasses, jewelry 5. Drape client with shampoo cape and two towels. Avoid irritation do not shampoo before hydroxide relaxer.

Procedure for applying virgin hydroxide relaxer; 1.part hair in 4 sections top of forehead to nape of neck and from ear to ear. 2.apply protective base cream to hairline, ears and scalp. 3.wear gloves, begin relaxer, and apply to the most resistant area first usually back of head. Make 1/4 to 1/2 inch horizontal partings apply relaxer to top of strand then to bottom of strand, apply relaxer 1/4 to 1/2 inch away from scalp and up to porous end. To avoid scalp irritation do not allow relaxer to touch scalp until last few min. of processing. You can apply relaxer with an applicator bottle, brush, or a rattail comb. I prefer a brush and bowl. 4.continue applying working your way down the hairline 5.continue application with remaining sections, finish most resistant areas first. 6. After relaxer has been applied to all sections, use your comb or your hands to smooth each section. 7.process according to manufacturer's directions. Periodic strand test(use water bottle) processing time may be less than 20 min. 8.during last few min. work relaxer down to the scalp and through ends use additional relaxer as need. Comb and smooth all sections. 9.rinse thoroughly with warm water remove all traces of relaxer. (approx. 5-7 min) 10. Shampoo and condition the hair 11. Style as desired

Criteria; Check for breakage, how close to the scalp and ends for dryness.

Clean up and sanitation; 1.discard disposable supplies in appropriate receptacles. 2.disinfect implements and store according to sanitation requirements. 3. Clean sanitize and prepare station for next service 4.wash hands with warm soapy water 5.complete clients records
