Welcome/ Questionnaire: Describe what Gotham means to you in 2 words. How do we bring to life the 2 words that you chose? What qualities define a Gotham Leader?

This was probably the most powerful discussion that our committee has held since our inception in July. I believe that hearing how special the league is from so many different people empowers you to become a better leader. The group’s answers ranged from ‘social sport’ and ‘being accepted’ to ‘life changing’ and ‘highway haven’. In many ways this discussion united our committee members around a specific goal; to build and promote community through our events and activities programs.

I) Old Business

A) Winter/Spring Tryouts: What was your role, share your suggestions and concerns: Run the practice gym like the tryout gym with ‘waves’ instead of open scrimmage Seek out the ‘99’s’ and make them feel welcome as well as explain the process Express the need for ‘Safety First’ in the practice gym Organize everyone trying out into groups. Have Leadership members provide overview/welcome/etc. throughout the day to the different groups. This suggestion is from someone noticing that some people who arrive later don’t hear the welcome speeches by Leadership There was an overwhelming need to make sure that people don’t feel like ‘cattle’ when trying out and that Leaders don’t act in a condescending manner towards new people

II) New Business

A) We kicked off the meeting with a Halloween Trivia Quiz to promote our upcoming SPOOKTACULAR WEEK at Gotham, October 26 – 30. During this week, we will be hosting several Halloween-themed events including Gotham Bake-Off scheduled for Wednesday, October 26, Tarot Card Readings before D3-6 Open Play on Thursday, October 27, Weekender Potluck on Saturday, October 29 and Halloween Drag Friendship Tournament on Sunday, October 30, 2016.

We are postponing the Coming Out Project postcards display until the last week of October to be timed with our Spooktacular Week events.

C) We have approached Monster Bar in West Village aboutth hosting our Welcome Social for Spring 2017 on either Tuesday, February 21 or 28 . (Quick follow up – they have agreed to host our event!) We are looking for a rooftop bar for Summer Social

D) Gotham Shopping Night was a huge hit! Doug Morris did an outstanding job of spreading the word and promoting this event. The committee agreed to make this an annual event to be held during Fall. Next year our goal is to encourage more participation from other vendors in the surrounding area too. We are hoping to call this event, ‘Gotham Block Party’

E) Doug shared a new idea, ‘Mr/Ms. Gotham Contest’ involving a representative from every Division and Power play division. It would be a fun, lighthearted and wacky, talent and beauty pageant.

F) Ice Skating Night at Bryant Park was discussed as an idea for November/December

G) Ballapoolza 2016 will feature a Talent Show. This is a new addition to our annual program. Our newest recruit, Erik Heitz who is a Gotham alumni is willing to help us coordinate our first ever, “Gotham’s Got Talent” show. Eric has worked for Disney for several years and has extensive entertainment work experience. We are hoping to recruit singers and drag queens from Division/Power Play to perform. (It’s nice to note that someone saw are announcements for a Talent Show on social media!)

discussed that thisth event tentatively called ‘The Volley Ball’ would be a great way to celebrate our 40 Anniversary. Order your tuxedos now!!!

We’re hoping these ‘Road to Bake-Off’ videos will spark interest in our first AIDS Walk fundraiser of the Fall season. Rachel from AIDS Walk alerted us that we cannot register our team until December so all donations will have to be cash or checks. VI) Another idea that we began brainstorming was about raising money for Gotham and/or AIDS Walk by selling volleyballs. Members suggested that we buy volleyballs in bulk and then resell them with profit margin to our members.

VII) Max also wants to acknowledge Juan’s courage for sharing his story in one of our Coming Out Project video. During our meeting, Juan discussed some personal issues that prevented him from actively playing in Division Play this season.

II.) Old Business

III.) New Business

A.) How To Deal with Leadership Role Burnout: Several members have commented to me via text or e-mail that they feel overwhelmed and overcommitted in their new positions. I took the opportunity to address any common feelings among attending members. I stressed that we are in the beginning stages of our new structure. Their feelings and concerns are important feedback that we should review at the end of the season. I also went into details about their roles and responsibilities related to ‘tryouts’ and ‘members on duty’ shifts to give them more clarity. We agreed to address this topic at each follow up meeting.

B.) New Improvements on Website: We discussed that our newly formed website committee will be tackling issues with the existing website. Most members agreed that they refer to the site for open play schedules, tournament schedules, team rosters and Fall/Spring/Summer registration. Group Members are asked to bring their suggestions for improvements and additions to the next meeting.

C.) New ideas for Alumni involvement: We had a lively discussion about how to engage our Gotham alumni in our ongoing programming. Members agreed that alumni could volunteer at tryouts and EOS tournaments and parties. They also suggested we invite alumni to act as volunteer coaches in league and open plays.

D.) Callen Lorde’s pending participation at Tryouts update (They are hoping to participate in either D7-8 or D9-10 Tryouts.)

E.) Bake Off video update: Last year’s Bake-Off winner, Tony Lerro has agreed to star in a FB live video entitled ‘ON THE ROAD TO BAKE-OFF’ to help us with early promotion for one of our biggest AIDS Walk Team fundraisers. Minutes of the Thursday, July 7, 2016 Meeting of the Activities and Outreach Leadership Group Location: Coffee Beanery, West 14th Street / New York, New York

Meeting Attendance: Max Szadek (Chair), Oscar Apaydlani, Juan Arevalo, Joe Hemsing, Dorothy Junio, Joe Mingano, Douglas Morris, Chris Ng, Cliff Wallace

I) Welcome

II) Old Business A) Summer Welcome Social – We raised $500 for Pulse. We have not received our donation from the Boiler Room. B) Pride Parade – We decided we need at least 2 Parade Marshalls (one in front and one in back) for next year. People seemed disappointed that we didn’t have a float and/or music. People liked the t-shirts.

III) New Business A) Max provided a brief overview of the roles and responsibilities for Opening and Closing Gym duties and Fall Tryouts. B) We discussed locations for the Fall Social that we are tentatively scheduling for Tuesday, September 27, 2016. At the top of our list is Industry. C) We discussed Coming Out Postcard distribution at Fall Tryouts and the first weeks of the Fall Season. We discussed Coming Out Project Display during the week leading up to National Coming Out Day on October 11, 2016. D) We discussed adding a social media element to the Fall Bake Off Competition benefiting AIDS Walk NYC to encourage donations from friends and family members. Our concept would be to have members submit short cooking videos prior to the competition and have some sort of online voting to tabulate leaders before the actual event. E) We discussed adding a Gotham Talent Show to Ballapoolza 2016 scheduled for Friday, November 19, 2016 at Rockbar NYC. Selected talent would appear in 15 minute shows at 7:30 PM, 8:30 PM and 9:30 PM. We want to ask members if they would participate in a talent show in one of our weekly e-blasts to gauge interest. We also discussed that Division 3 Captains, Ex-Captains, Board Members and Players will be our ‘celebrity’ bartenders this year. F) We discussed our Gotham Cares Corporate Outreach event tentatively scheduled for Sunday, December 11, 2016, 3-5 PM. This event would directly follow our Gotham Cares Mixer. 2 committee members, Juan, Joe M. have said that their companies would sponsor employees to come learn to play volleyball in exchange for a potential $50 per person fee to go to directly to our Gotham AIDS Walk team. Our plan is to host 3 hour event that’s similar in structure to our skills based tryouts. However our plan is to make the experience more enjoyable, less stressful for participants. We would run participants through our basic tryout skill drills with more time allotted per drill. We would also include a brief instruction and introduction before each drill begins. We would end the session with the ‘waves’ drill scrimmage. We would also play music throughout the event and host a refreshments table between the two Rustin gyms. We would like to involve the power coaches, leadership members and/or Gotham players as volunteers to help run drills and provide
