Implementing BIM on conservation heritage projects: Lessons from renovation case studies Abstract Purpose: Heritage or Historic BIM, often referred to as HBIM, is becoming an established feature in both research and practice. The advancement of data capture technologies such as laser scanning and improved photogrammetry, along with the continued power of BIM authoring tools has provided the ability to generate more accurate digital representations of heritage buildings which can then be used during renovation and refurbishment projects. Very often these representations of HBIM are developed to support the design process. What appears to be often overlooked is the issue of conservation and how this can be linked to the BIM process to support the conservation management plan for the building once it is given a new lease of life following the refurbishment process. Approach: The paper presents a review of the context of conservation and HBIM then subsequently presents two case studies of how HBIM was applied to high profile renovation and conservation projects in the UK. In presenting the case studies, a range of issues is identified which support findings from the literature noting that HBIM is predominantly a tool for the geometric modelling of historic fabric with less regard for the actual process of renovation and conservation in historic buildings. Findings: Lessons learnt from the case studies and from existing literature are distilled to develop a framework for the implementation of HBIM on heritage renovation projects to support the ongoing conservation of the building as an integral part of a BIM based asset management strategy. Five key areas are identified in the framework including Value, Significance, Recording, Data Management and Asset Management. -

BELLS IN AND AROUND BIRMINGHAM: A SURVEY AND HISTORY (PART 1: PREFACE, EXPLANATORY NOTES, INTRODUCTION, LOCATIONS A-E) Chris Pickford Version date: 29/09/2020 Preface Not long after I took up ringing in 1966 I began collecting information on the bells in Worcestershire (where I was at boarding school) and Warwickshire (where my parents lived). I date my first ‘serious’ visits to April 1968 since when I have been working intermittently on comprehensive surveys of bells in the two counties. The prospect of tackling a large urban area like Birmingham was always a rather daunting one and for a long time I skirted round it. However, when I took on the role of Bells Adviser to the Birmingham Diocesan Advisory Committee in 1987 I decided to pick up the challenge and during the course of the next couple of years managed to visit nearly every belfry in the area. The work originally led to the creation of a Diocesan Inventory (rather in the format of the present National Bells Register) and the updating of the Council for the Care of Churches’ preservation list for the Diocese. I stepped down as Bells Adviser in 1998 but in 2003-4 - following a return to the Midlands - I did some further survey work and wrote up the entire work in its present form. Since then I have tried to keep it up to date as best I can. I never intended this to be a book - and long ago gave up talking of books to replace Walters’s books on the Church Bells of Warwickshire (1910) Church Bells of Worcestershire (1925-31) - as this sort of study is too specialised (and too detailed in this form) for traditional publication. -

ABSTRACT This thesis is the first to examine the lives and careers of professional women who were working within the thriving Arts and Crafts Movement in Birmingham in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It utilises previously unresearched primary and secondary sources in art galleries, the Birmingham School of Art and local studies collections to present a series of case studies of professional women working in the fields of jewellery and metalware, stained glass, painting, book illustration, textiles and illumination. This thesis demonstrates that women made an important, although currently unacknowledged, professional contribution to the Arts and Crafts Movement in the region. -

MADRESFIELD COURT Text by John de la Cour Madresfield Court stands at the foot of the Malvern Hills in a spectacular setting among park- land and gardens at the centre of a large, predominantly agricultural, estate of approximately 4,000 acres. The house is completely surrounded by a wide moat. Amongst other types of fish, this contains carp who show themselves on sunny days. Occasionally the blue flash of a passing kingfisher is seen. The earliest known construction on this site was a great hall built in the twelfth century within the moat for safety, and designed for the feudal and communal life of the Middle Ages. In the Tudor period a manor house grew up round the hall, which remained as a dining hall in the middle. The new Tudor house had more rooms for different purposes, including a Long Gallery typical of the times, which suited an increasingly private domestic life. During the succeeding centuries this core was added to, altered and renovated to suit the current circumstances of the family. The biggest changes were made in the last century when the Victorian architect Philip Hardwick (1792–1870) designed a major reconstruction in the Victorian Gothic style which was carried out over several years from 1865. During this time some of the seventeenth and eighteenth century alterations were removed in order to restore the original Tudor appearance of the old house. A little later, in 1875, the Bell Tower was added, echoing this general style. HISTORY OF THE HOUSE AND FAMILY Madresfield has never been bought or sold since records began. -
