These can be pre-existing folds that become modified or folds developed during the shearing event. Among the syn-shearing folds, a second subdivision is based on the relative age of the folded surface, which can be pre-existing or newly formed during the shearing event. In each of the three categories final fold geometry and orientation show complex relationships with the kinematic frame. The final fold geometry depends on the vorticity within the shear zone, the rheology and the initial orientation of the folded surface relative to the kinematic framework. It follows that folds are complex structures, difficult to use as kinematic indicators. However, in shear zones where undeformed wall rocks with pre-shear structures are accessible and where kinematics can be well established, folds can provide a valuable natural means to understand the initiation and evolution of structures under non-coaxial regimes. We point to the need of discriminating among different plausible categories, based on the nature of the folded surface and on the inherent structural features of each category. q 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Stylolite formation depends on rock composition and structure, stress and fluids. Stylolite geometry, fractal and self-affine properties, network structure, are investigated. The experiments and physics-based numerical models for their formation are reviewed. Stylolites can be used as markers of strain, paleostress orientation and magnitude. Stylolites impact transport properties, as function of maturity and flow direction. Abstract Stylolites are ubiquitous geo-patterns observed in rocks in the upper crust, from geological reservoirs in sedimentary rocks to deformation zones, in folds, faults, and shear zones. These rough surfaces play a major role in the dissolution of rocks around stressed contacts, the transport of dissolved material and the precipitation in surrounding pores. Consequently, they 1 play an active role in the evolution of rock microstructures and rheological properties in the Earth’s crust. -

Gootsrooo, U niver si.tyoJ W ashington, S eattle, W ashington. Assrnacr Porphyroblastic textures are common to hornfels in the Cornucopia area oJ the Wal- lowa Mountains of northeastern Oregon. Recent petrographic studies indicate that they are also common to some of the rocks of the Cascades of Washington. Plagioclase porphyro- blasts range from initial allotrioblastic forms to fully developed idioblastic crystals. They exhibit many characteristic features which may include poikioblastic structures, helizitic inclusions and complex aggregates. The arrangement within the crystal of inclusions of either identifiable minerals or turbid material, is apparently directly related to the stage of development of the porphyroblast. This included matter differs chiefly in its arrange- ment from the products of endogenetic or subsequent alteration. Recognition of these metamorphic textures and structures is one of the points essential to the interpretation of recrystallization-replacement as applied to igneous-appearing rocks which are believed to have been formed in situ by processesof additive hydrothermal metamorphism. In a previous paper the writer outlined the development of qaartz porphyroblasts in a siliceoushornfels.2 The quartz porphyroblasts in the siliceoushornfels were too small (0.5 mm.) to be conspicuousin the hand specimens,but were readily seenunder crossednicols, although in plane light they merged almost completely with the groundmass of the horn- fels, and contained the sameabundance of small inclusions as the ground- mass. The siliceoushornfels is not the most abundant; biotitic and horn- blendic varieties are far more common.
