Students’ involvement in community service is also reflected in HCC’s response on the 2012 Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). Participation in a community- based project as part of a regular course was among the top five items in which HCC performed most favorably compared with the 2012 CCSSE Cohort, with 9.3 percent of HCC students, compared to 7.1 percent of other students in the cohort, who responded often or very often. Active and Collaborative Learning, one of five key areas of student engagement tracked by the national survey, underscores the value of volunteerism as part of a student’s experience. Event Spotlight: “Threads of AFRICA” The HCC Fashion Program presents “Threads of AFRICA,” which will be on display at Gallery 3601 through September 30. The dazzling works of fashion students were made primarily with Ankara fabrics from West Africa. Kente cloth fabric, which represents some of the finest and most important weaving in existence, will be on display. African village costumes from Zulu and Bamileke tribes will also be displayed among South African animals. Student’s jewelry and handbags are juxtaposed among African artifacts and Nomadic Jewelry. Contemporary and traditional artifacts are on loan to HCC from the private collection of faculty member and HCC Collections curator Alex Chapman.
