Let me sincerely thank the Chiefs and people of Sunyani, in fact, the Brong Ahafo Region for making the land available to us. This is a clear indication of the support and collaboration between the Bank and the Chiefs. And let me also take this opportunity to thank the immediate past Governor of the Bank of Ghana Dr. Henry Kofi Wampah for spearheading this project and seeing to its completion. As we may all be aware, prior to the construction of this ultra-modern office complex, the Sunyani Regional Office had operated from the second floor of a building whose lower floors were occupied by GCB Bank. The regulator sharing office with the client is not ethically sound and exposes the Bank to familiarity threats. In addition, the former Office did not have a banknote processing capacity and depended on the Kumasi Regional Office for the processing of its deposits as well as fit-sorting banknotes for re-issuance to banks and other financial institutions in its catchment area. -

Airtel Partners with Ecobank
Airtel Africa announces partnership with Ecobank Group to allow Airtel Money customers to improve their access to mobile financial services London: 21 October 2019: Airtel Africa, a leading global telecommunications services provider with operations in 14 countries across Africa, and Ecobank Transnational Incorporated ("ETI"), the parent company of Ecobank the leading pan-African banking group operating in 33 countries, have signed a partnership which will allows millions of Airtel Money and Ecobank customers across Africa to improve their access to mobile financial services and carry out a variety of mobile transactions This partnership, which is subject to regulatory approval in each market, will enable Airtel Money customers , through Ecobank’s digital financial services ecosystem, make online deposits and withdrawals, effect real time domestic and international money transfers, make in-store merchant payments, and access loans and savings products amongst others. The partnership will also allow Ecobank corporate account holders to make bulk disbursements, such as payroll payments, directly into Airtel Money customer wallets. Additionally, Ecobank will be able to sponsor Airtel Money to issue both virtual and physical debit and pre-paid cards to Airtel Money customers. Raghunath Mandava, CEO for Airtel Africa, said: “This partnership is a further demonstration of Airtel Africa’s commitment to provide affordable, simple and innovative solutions for our consumers across Africa. We will continue to offer locally relevant M-Commerce solutions with partners like Ecobank in order to enhance the daily lives of our customers.” Ecobank Group CEO, Ade Ayeyemi, commented: “We believe that financial inclusion can ultimately contribute to economic development, collaborating with major telecommunications providers in Africa is therefore a key strategic driver towards closing the gap between the banked and the underbanked. -

Texila International Journal of Management Volume 3, Issue 2, Nov 2017 Synergies from Mergers and Acquisitions: A Study of Ecobank Ghana Limited and the Trust Bank Article by Daniel Kwabla- King Management, Texila American University, Ghana E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) the national Pension Scheme managers in Ghana with significant stake in the Ghanaian banking industry, in the year 2011 made a strategic move to drive bank consolidation in Ghana through the swapping of its shares in The Trust Bank (TTB) for ETI’s shares in Ecobank Ghana Limited (EBG). This study was set examine whether synergies were derived from the merger. It also examined whether the objectives set by SSNIT were met and finally determine whether the bank has remained competitive after the merger. The approach used for the study was quantitative technique and case study which concluded that the merger of Ecobank Ghana Limited and TTB achieved the intended results for SSNIT. Introduction The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) which had shares in most banks with controlling interest in TTB, in line with realigning its investments portfolio to achieve maximum returns, decided to drive bank consolidation through the swapping of its shares in The Trust Bank (TTB) for ETI’s shares in Ecobank Ghana Limited (EBG). The objective of the merger was to take advantage of efficiencies and synergies leading to enhanced shareholder value. Making a case for the merger, it was established that the core business of TTB was Commercial and retail banking with their focus on Small and Medium Scale Enterprises (SMEs). -

Kennedy Frimpong3 1Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology 2Senior Lecturer, Department of Accountancy, Kumasi Technical University, Ghana and Director, International Affairs and Institutional Linkages 3Lecturer, Department of Accountancy, Sunyani Technical University, Ghana ABSTRACT: The study provides empirical examination on the impact of business consolidation or mergers and acquisitions (M&A) on the financial performance of banks in Ghana. Both descriptive and correlational research designs were employed for the study. Two banks: Ecobank Ghana Ltd and Access Bank Ghana Ltd were chosen for the study. The annual reports of the banks from pre-merger period (2009 to 2011) and post-merger period (2012 to 2015) were used for the analysis. Two analysis techniques: ratio and regression analysis were used to examine the impact of mergers and acquisitions (M&A) on the profitability of these firms. Net profit margin (NPM) and return on capital employed (ROCE) were used as proxies for financial performance and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) regression model was used to estimate the level of impact of M&A on the performance of the banks. The study revealed that mergers and acquisitions (M&A) resulted to more than 80% growth in income and the net assets immediately after acquisition. The growth in profitability continued in subsequent years, however at a decreasing rates.
