Attachment 1 1.Computer Virus Reported (1) Summary for this Quarter The number of the cases reported for viruses*1 in the first quarter of 2013 decreased from that of the fourth quarter of 2012 (See Figure 1-1). As for the number of the viruses detected*2 in the first quarter of 2013, W32/Mydoom accounted for three-fourths of the total (See Figure 1-2). Compared to the fourth quarter of 2012, however, both W32/Mydoom and W32/Netsky showed a decreasing trend. When we looked into the cases reported for W32/Netsky, we found that in most of those cases, the virus code had been corrupted, for which the virus was unable to carry out its infection activity. So, it is unlikely that the number of cases involving this virus will increase significantly in the future As for W32/IRCbot, it has greatly decreased from the level of the fourth quarter of 2012. W32/IRCbot carries out infection activities by exploiting vulnerabilities within Windows or programs, and is often used as a foothold for carrying out "Targeted Attack". It is likely that that there has been a shift to attacks not using this virus. XM/Mailcab is a mass-mailing type virus that exploits mailer's address book and distributes copies of itself. By carelessly opening this type of email attachment, the user's computer is infected and if the number of such users increases, so will the number of the cases reported. As for the number of the malicious programs detected in the first quarter of 2013, Bancos, which steals IDs/Passwords for Internet banking, Backdoor, which sets up a back door on the target PC, and Webkit, which guides Internet users to a maliciously-crafted Website to infect with another virus, were detected in large numbers. -
Backdoors in Software: a Cycle of Fear and Uncertainty
BACKDOORS IN SOFTWARE: A CYCLE OF FEAR AND UNCERTAINTY Leah Holden, Tufts University, Medford, MA Abstract: With the advent of cryptography and an increasingly online world, an antagonist to the security provided by encryption has emerged: backdoors. Backdoors are slated as insidious but often they aren’t intended to be. Backdoors can just be abused maintenance accounts, exploited vulnerabilities, or created by another agent via infecting host servers with malware. We cannot ignore that they may also be intentionally programmed into the source code of an application. Like with the cyber attrition problem, it may be difficult to determine the root cause of a backdoor and challenging to prove its very existence. These characteristics of backdoors ultimately lead to a state of being that I liken to a cycle of fear where governments or companies throw accusations around, the public roasts the accused, and other companies live in fear of being next. Notably missing from this cycle are any concrete solutions for preventing backdoors. A pervasive problem underlies this cycle: backdoors could be mitigated if software developers and their managers fully embraced the concept that no one should ever be able to bypass authentication. From the Clipper chip to the FBI and Apple’s standoff, we will examine requested, suspected, and proven backdoors up through the end of 2017. We will also look at the aftermath of these incidents and their effect on the relationship between software and government. Introduction: A backdoor has been defined as both “an undocumented portal that allows an administrator to enter the system to troubleshoot or do upkeep” and “ a secret portal that hackers and intelligence agencies used to gain illicit access” (Zetter). -

Email: [email protected] Introduction As 2012 Matasano summer interns, we were tasked with running a research project with a couple criteria: • It should be something we are both interested in. • We should be able to present our research for the company at the end of our internship. However, on completion, we decided that it would be best if we made our findings public. With John Villamil, our advisor, we decided that given our interest in low-level analysis, we should analyze Remote Administration Tools (RATs). RATs have recently seen media attention due to their use by oppressive governments in spying on activists and other “dissidents”. We felt this to be a perfect project. Remote Administration Tools are pieces of software which, once installed on a victim’s computer allow a remote user to control and access the system. RATs can be used legitimately by system administrators, or they can be used maliciously. There are a variety of methods by which they are installed on a computer: Various social engineering tactics can be employed to get a user to open the executable, they can be bundled with other pieces of software, they can be installed as the payload of a virus or worm, or they can be installed after an attacker gains access to a system through an exploit. -

NAME DESCRIPTION Conficker A/B Conficker A/B is a downloader worm that is used to propagate additional malware. The original malware it was after was rogue AV - but the army's current focus is undefined. At this point it has no other purpose but to spread. Propagation methods include a Microsoft server service vulnerability (MS08-067) - weakly protected network shares - and removable devices like USB keys. Once on a machine, it will attach itself to current processes such as explorer.exe and search for other vulnerable machines across the network. Using a list of passwords and actively searching for legitimate usernames - the ... Mariposa Mariposa was first observed in May 2009 as an emerging botnet. Since then it has infected an ever- growing number of systems; currently, in the millions. Mariposa works by installing itself in a hidden location on the compromised system and injecting code into the critical process ͞ĞdžƉůŽƌĞƌ͘ĞdžĞ͘͟/ƚŝƐknown to affect all modern Windows versions, editing the registry to allow it to automatically start upon login. Additionally, there is a guard that prevents deletion while running, and it automatically restarts upon crash/restart of explorer.exe. In essence, Mariposa opens a backdoor on the compromised computer, which grants full shell access to ... Unknown A botnet is designated 'unknown' when it is first being tracked, or before it is given a publicly- known common name. -
