Spring 2019 Newsletter “STRIVING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE” SPRING/SUMMER 2019 SEE INSIDE FOR DETAILS OF ACTIVITIES CELEBRATING CARERS WEEK 10TH – 16TH JUNE 2019 Caring can be a hugely rewarding experience but carers often find it challenging to take care of their own wellbeing whilst caring. Its impact on all aspects of life from relationships and health to finances and work should not be underestimated. Caring without the right information and support can be tough. This Carers Week we’re coming together to help get carers connected. There are 6.5 million people in the UK who are carers. They will be looking after a family member or friend who has a disability, mental or physical illness, or who needs extra help as they grow older. Everyone has a part to play in connecting carers and helping them to get the support they need to care without putting off their own health needs or losing important relationships with others. Caring can be extremely complicated, whether your grappling with the benefits system or considering how to pay for care. There are lots of extra costs that can come with caring and giving up work or choosing to reduce working hours can lead to money worries. The most important thing you can do is recognize that you are a carer and connect with support services available. It’s important to find out about the different ways you can get advice and support with caring. Its natural to think of ourselves as family or friends rather than as carers. Looking after someone can be hard work though and carers often miss out on support services available. Getting a carer’s assessment which looks at what support you might need as a carer is a great start. From arranging a break from caring, getting the right equipment to care safely or getting support with improving your own well-being, services can connect carers to a range of support. The Havering Carers’ Hub has just celebrated the first anniversary providing a direct support service for adults with caring responsibilities for Havering residents. It has been a challenging, busy, exciting and rewarding twelve months for all of those involved in setting up the service. Carers have had access to information advice and support, as well as encouragement to develop the skills tools and confidence to continue their caring role. As well as the service providing one-to-one support either on the telephone or via home visits, many of our Carers have also attended regular Carer Forums and have participated in a variety of Group activities and experienced invaluable peer support from each other. At the Hub we have seen firsthand how important it is for a Carer to feel listened to and less isolated. As a result, and after taking Carers’ feedback on board, we will be developing more Groups to cover a wider area across the Borough. In June we will be introducing ‘activity only’ or ‘peer support only’ Groups which will enable Carers to choose what specifically suits them as well as which venue they prefer. (See inside for details) Throughout the year the Hub have engaged with both voluntary and statutory services and are fully aware of the benefits for more partnership working to ensure that Carers receive the support they need to maintain their own wellbeing. Thank-you to everyone who has supported us this year and we look forward to more exciting challenges to come. Maggie Walker – Operations Lead HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT ABOUT BECOMING A BOARD MEMBER FOR A CHARITY? Are you interested in carers’ issues? Would you be willing to give up around three hours every other month to attend a Board meeting? At Carers we work across Barking and Dagenham, Havering and Thurrock. We are looking to recruit new Board Members who can support the charity. This is a voluntary post; however you can claim out of pocket expenses for travel or mileage. You will be required to attend six Board Meetings a year 5pm to 7pm. You will receive a full induction and the support of the Executive Director and fellow Board Members If you would like to know more please contact Lorraine Goldberg Executive Director on 0208 593 4422 or email [email protected] “STRIVING TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE” SUPPORT GROUP NEWS! Previously, although there has been significant cultural activity within Havering, there has not been an up-to-date strategic context within which the diverse provision and opportunities that exist can sit. Culture touches upon many peoples’ lives in Havering and significantly contributes to the quality of life and health and well-being of residents and visitors to our borough. The Culture Strategy is fundamental to meeting the needs of the wider community. The strategy has been developed through a five part consultation process: 1. A series of seven public workshops held in venues across the borough. 2. A number of one-to-one meetings with representatives of individual organisations and stakeholders across the borough. 3. An online consultation questionnaire which the public responded to, developed in consultation with the new Cultural Stakeholders advisory group and promoted through social media and partner organisations.

  • Appendix 1 Havering Local Studies & Family History
APPENDIX 1 HAVERING LOCAL STUDIES & FAMILY HISTORY CENTRE 2010/2011 Prepared by The Local History Librarian, Havering Library Service. Havering’s Local Studies and Family History Centre opened to the public in the refurbished Central Library in July 2011. Local Studies is a long established aspect of the library service's provision and is a significant strand in the fulfilment of the Public Libraries and Museums Act. This service has been part of the Reference Library Service offered in the Central Library and its predecessor Romford Library since 1930. The local artist Alfred Bennett Bamford donated a significant collection of local books, maps, prints and drawings to the Romford Library in the 1930s. This print of one of his drawings shows Marshalls House 1889. Bamford’s collection is the foundation of the Local Studies and Family History Centre collection The refurbishment of the Central Library offered the opportunity to create a dedicated space for this service and the individuals and groups wishing to research the Havering area and their own family history. There are two staff, a Local History Librarian and a Family History Senior Library Assistant. The service is open to the public 36 hours per week including Saturdays and one late evening. Visitors to the library are able to browse a collection of key books about the Borough as well as a range of local history journals and an extensive collection of books dealing with specialist aspects of family history. Local newspapers back to 1866 and copies of parish registers for the area are available on microfilm. A subscription to Ancestry.com offers free access to a wide range of records of great interest to family and local historians, in particular Census returns between 1841 and 1901 and indexes to the General Registrar’s record of births, marriages and deaths since 1837.

  • 5 Things to Do in Romford
Beyond London’s Olympics: 5 Things to Do in Romford By Patti Morrow With the crush of bodies infiltrating London for the 2012 Summer Olympics, residents and tourists alike will be looking for an easy escape from the frenzied city. Just a mere 20-minute train ride from Olympic Park at Stratford lies their respite: Romford, a vibrant suburban town in northeast London. Long recognized as a bedroom community of Greater London, Romford is considered an ideal location due to its close proximity to either the English countryside or the seacoast. Whether you’re strolling down the quintessential chains of Tudor row houses or chatting up a local Brit in a neighborhood pub, Romford is a haven for those who are seeking a glimpse of the “true English lifestyle.” 1. To market, to market. Open every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, the Romford Market, a colorful open-air street extravaganza, is one of the oldest markets in England, formed from a grant from King Henry III in 1247 A.D. More than 150 stalls hawking every kind of bargain – fresh produce, butchers and fishmongers, home-baked pasties, clothing, antiques, jewelry, flowers, music and tech gadgets – you name it, it’s there. Look for the giant Union Jack flag on the Tollgate House building at the end of the market. For those who prefer traditional indoor shopping, adjacent to the market is the Liberty Shopping Centre, and within a short walk is the Brewery Shopping Centre. 2. Go Greyhound. Spend a day at Romford Greyhound Stadium, winner of the 1998 and 2003 British Greyhound Racing Board's 'Racecourse of the Year' award, where you can simply be a spectator or place bets on the dogs as well as enjoy the various bars and restaurants.
