I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract This thesis presents a study of how identification, according to Kenneth Burke's theory, can be observed in the media-related practices promoted by the cyber-activist collective Anonymous. Identification is the capacity of community-building through the use of shared interests. Burke affirms that, as human beings are essentially social, identification is the very aim of any human interaction. Cyber-activism deeply relies on this capacity to promote and legitimise its campaigns. In the case of Anonymous, the collective became extremely popular and is now a frequent presence even in street protests, usually organised online, around the world. Here, I argue that this power was possible through the use of identification, which helped attract a large number of individuals to the collective. Anonymous was particularly skilled in its capacity to create an ideology for each campaign, which worked well to set up a perfect enemy who should be fought against by any people, despite their demographic or social status. Other forms of identification were also present and important. -

Introduction Egypt has experienced many political and social changes prior to and since the 2011 uprising. These changes have had a significant impact on civic space offline, as well as online. Digital rights are simply human rights in online spaces and are recognised as being of central importance. This is especially true when closing civic space in the physical world means that opening civic space online is a necessary last resort. The coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic has highlighted the importance of digital rights, especially for vulnerable groups such as refugees and people in rural and remote areas. The main objective of this report is to give an overview of digital rights in Egypt, especially in the context of freedom of expression and freedom of assembly, the right to access the internet, and for access to information, and the right to knowledge; and to explore the impacts of the political context on civic space in general and digital rights in particular. -

And finally, how, in the early years of the 21st century he became the face of the international hacktivist group known as Anonymous. Furthermore, I will be analyzing the historical context in which the character of Guy Fawkes was conceived as well as explaining why he was the main figure who was accounted responsible for the Gunpowder Plot despite the fact that he was not its leader. Moreover, I will analyze why the group Anonymous chose the “Fawkesque” mask from the character from the graphic novel as well as the movie V for Vendetta which was at the same time inspired in the historical character, to become the face of the 21st century hacktivist movement. REEDOM OUSE Freedom on the Net 2011 1 F H FREEDOM ON THE NET 2011: GLOBAL SCORES Freedom on the Net aims to measure each country’s level of internet and new media freedom. Each country receives a numerical score from 0 (the most free) to 100 (the least free), which serves as the basis for an internet freedom status designation of Free (0-30 points), Partly Free (31-60 points), or Not Free (61-100). Ratings are determined through an examination of three broad categories: obstacles to access, limits on content, and violation of user rights. Obstacles to Access: assesses infrastructural and economic barriers to access; governmental efforts to block specific applications or technologies; and legal, regulatory and ownership control over internet and mobile phone access providers. Limits on Content: examines filtering and blocking of websites; other forms of censorship and self-censorship; manipulation of content; the diversity of online news media; and usage of digital media for social and political activism. Violations of User Rights: measures legal protections and restrictions on online activity; surveillance; privacy; and repercussions for online activity, such as legal prosecution, imprisonment, physical attacks, or other forms of harassment. Tactical Frivolity Jemima Wyman
These collages developed out of witnessing various protest move- ments online. In early 2011, as part of an effort to be active, embodied, and empathetic in the interface with the computer screen, I started pulling, archiving, printing and hand-cutting images of pro- testers wearing Guy Fawkes masks. The archive has developed in Tactical Frivolity tandem with the growing protest culture over the last few years. There was something compelling about this shared collective face that ignored geographical borders and divergent ideological per- spectives. A mask is magic, especially when it multiplies to become Jemima Wyman a communal architecture and a social camouflage in a world of net- worked surveillance. This iteration in X-TRA documents a selection from six different sub- categories of protesters who customize and accessorize the Guy Fawkes mask. These interventions range from appropriated Ukuku masks (a traditional Peruvian mask that appears to merge the color- ful knitted balaclava of the Free Pussy Riot movement with the face of Guy Fawkes) to spray-painted masks by Black bloc and a decaled First Nations variation. On the mask: Guy Fawkes (1570–1606) was a British revolutionary whose failed plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 is still commemorated each year in the United Kingdom with bonfires and backyard fireworks. In the days leading up to November 5, chil- dren traditionally solicited donations to buy fireworks by displaying a “guy” on the sidewalk (a figure made of discarded clothing stuffed with rags or paper, often wearing a home-made mask).1 Their cry— “Penny for the Guy!”—rang out in the cold November evenings, as passers-by hurried home from work or school. -

Carranza NYC Department of Education Tweed Courthouse 52 Chambers Street New York, NY 10007 RE: Proposed DOE Communications Plan for Immigrants Dear Chancellor Carranza, The New York Immigration Coalition’s Education Collaborative is concerned about the New York City Department of Education’s (DOE) capacity to communicate with immigrant families and English Language Learners (ELLs) about the possible transition to blended learning models during the summer and into the 2020/2021 school year. To ensure immigrant families and ELLs have agency during the transition to blended school models, the Education Collaborative has outlined below pragmatic steps to improve school-based communications and central DOE capacity to do effective outreach to Limited English Proficient (LEP), low literacy, and low digital literacy households. The COVID pandemic has laid bare that DOE schools have a lot of work to do to become trusted places to share information and support for immigrant families. It is our hope that the DOE will employ these recommendations. While it is imperative that the DOE implement the following communications plan during the 2020 summer and into the 2020/2021 school, these multi-pronged approaches for communicating with immigrants should be implemented well beyond the pandemic. Recommendations for School-Based Communications: 1) Schools should communicate with parents through continuous touchpoints (phone calls, texts, social media, emails). Schools and educators should be instructed to communicate with immigrant families through a succession of different forms of communication, to ensure at least one source of communication will reach all families. Schools and educators should be instructed not to rely on sending messages through the instructional platforms, as this communications vehicle is the most challenging for hard to reach families. -

Januar, 2018 Erstgutachter: Prof. Dr. Jens Loenhoff, Universität Duisburg-Essen Zweitgutachter: Dr. Lutz Hachmeister, Institut für Medien- und Kommunikationspolitik (IfM) Abstract When in the summer of 2013 whistleblower Edward Snowden revealed the scope of the mass surveillance programs conducted by the National Security Agency and its international partners, privacy activists launched several global online and offline campaigns to protect privacy and resist surveillance. Applying methods of social movement frame and discourse analysis, the dissertation seeks to analyze the various ways activists have tried to shape the privacy discourse in a post 9/11 ‘Surveillance Society.’ A close reading of activist materials and texts over the course of four campaigns – “Restore the Fourth,” “Stop Watching Us,” “The Day We Fight Back,” and “Reset the Net” – reveals a set of frame packages, which are juxtaposed with the media coverage the campaigns have generated. In subsequent semi- structured interviews with 21 activists from 14 countries, participants involved in the protest events were asked to critically reflect on framing choices, media dynamics and the degree of transnational cooperation among various privacy advocacy groups. The dissertation contributes to the field of grass roots political communication research by discussing the potentials and limits of anti-surveillance frames as well as providing a cultural and oral history of organized resistance against surveillance in the post-Snowden world.
