Proven Results RECORD-SETTING PRIMARY ELECTIONS A record number of voters participated in Michigan’s primary election on Aug. 4, with more than 2.5 million people casting a vote either in person or by absentee ballot. One of the most followed races in the primary was the 13th Congressional District rematch between U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones. Jones represented the district for a few weeks in 2018, following the resignation of Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) in December 2017. After his resignation, there were two elections for the seat with Jones winning the special election to complete Conyers unexpired term, and Tlaib winning the regular race for the Congressional seat. This year, Tlaib and Jones were the only primary candidates. On Tuesday, Tlaib won the strongly Democratic district with nearly twice as many votes as Jones, potentially guaranteeing her a second term. In the 3rd Congressional District in West Michigan, Republican Peter Meijer, a U.S. Army veteran whose family founded the well-known Meijer retail chain, won a five-way contest with more than 50 percent of the vote, including holding a strong lead over his main opponent Rep. Lynn Afendoulis. Meijer will face Democratic attorney Hillary Scholten. The winner of that race will succeed U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a former Republican turned Libertarian who is not seeking reelection. February 17, 2021 U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 U.S. Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Members of Congress: As elected leaders representing communities across our nation, we are writing to urge you to take immediate action on comprehensive coronavirus relief legislation, including desperately needed funding for states, counties, cities, and schools, and an increase in states’ federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP). President Biden’s ambitious $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan will go a long way towards alleviating the significant financial strain COVID-19 has placed on our states, counties, cities, and schools, and the pocketbooks of working families. Working people have been on the frontlines of this pandemic for nearly a year and have continued to do their jobs during this difficult time. Dedicated public servants are still leaving their homes to ensure Americans continue to receive the essential services they rely upon: teachers and education workers are doing their best to provide quality education and keep their students safe, janitors are still keeping parks and public buildings clean, while healthcare providers are continuing to care for the sick. Meanwhile, it has been ten months since Congress passed the CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund to support these frontline workers and the essential services they provide. Without significant economic assistance from the federal government, many of these currently-middle class working families are at risk of falling into poverty through no fault of their own. It is a painful irony that while many have rightly called these essential workers heroes, our country has failed to truly respect them with a promise to protect them and pay them throughout the crisis.

The artist is unknown. The drawing predates the placement of the statue of Austin T. Blair on the capitol grounds in 1898. (Michigan State Archives) PAGE GRAPHICS Capitol Dome: The architectural rendering of the Michigan State Capitol’s dome is the work of Elijah E. Myers, the building’s renowned architect. Myers inked the rendering on linen in late 1871 or early 1872. Myers’ fine draftsmanship, the hallmark of his work, is clearly evident. Because of their size, few architectural renderings of the 19th century have survived. Michigan is fortunate that many of Myers’ designs for the Capitol were found in the building’s attic in the 1950’s. As part of the state’s 1987 sesquicentennial celebration, they were conserved and deposited in the Michigan State Archives.
