Students made original works of art depicting the theme of “The Importance of Voting.” The winning art piece, shown on the cover, was created by Kate Donoghue of Sylvan Lake. “Through my picture, I tried to portray that if you have the ability to vote but do not take the opportunity to do it, your thoughts and opinions will never be represented,” said Kate. Proven Results RECORD-SETTING PRIMARY ELECTIONS A record number of voters participated in Michigan’s primary election on Aug. 4, with more than 2.5 million people casting a vote either in person or by absentee ballot. One of the most followed races in the primary was the 13th Congressional District rematch between U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Detroit) and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones. Jones represented the district for a few weeks in 2018, following the resignation of Rep. John Conyers (D-Detroit) in December 2017. After his resignation, there were two elections for the seat with Jones winning the special election to complete Conyers unexpired term, and Tlaib winning the regular race for the Congressional seat. This year, Tlaib and Jones were the only primary candidates. On Tuesday, Tlaib won the strongly Democratic district with nearly twice as many votes as Jones, potentially guaranteeing her a second term. In the 3rd Congressional District in West Michigan, Republican Peter Meijer, a U.S. Army veteran whose family founded the well-known Meijer retail chain, won a five-way contest with more than 50 percent of the vote, including holding a strong lead over his main opponent Rep. Lynn Afendoulis. Meijer will face Democratic attorney Hillary Scholten. The winner of that race will succeed U.S. Rep. Justin Amash, a former Republican turned Libertarian who is not seeking reelection. In the 10th Congressional District, a Republican stronghold in the Thumb region, Republican businesswoman Lisa McClain of Bruce Township, a pro-Trump Republican who outspent her opponents, beat state Rep.

Declaration of Independence One of the most important duties of an American citizen is casting a ballot in an election. This November, Michigan’s citizens will be voting to select the fifteen representatives and one senator who will be responsible for making sure the voices of the people of Michigan are heard in the United States Congress. In order to help the voters of Michigan make an informed choice about their representation in Washington, D.C., the Michigan Catholic Conference has solicited the positions of the thirty Democratic and Republican candidates for the U.S. House and Senate on a variety of issues. We are pleased to make their answers available to you. Questionnaires were sent to the congressional and senate candidates from the major parties in early September 2002. Candidates were asked to mark whether their position was in support of, or in opposition to, the subject of questions found on pages two and three. Candidates were also given the opportunity of noting where they had no position on an issue. In some cases, candidates provided comments or answers on questions unsolicited by the Michigan Catholic Conference. Because the MCC candidate questionnaire did not include a spe- cific area for comment, these unsolicited comments and additions have not been reproduced here. The comments of the candidates will be provided upon request. The Michigan Catholic Conference does not endorse or oppose any candidates, under any circumstances, and no inference of endorsement or opposition should be concluded as a result of information provided in this issue of FOCUS.

    February 17, 2021 U.S. House of Representatives Washington, D.C. 20515 U.S. Senate Washington, D.C. 20510 Dear Members of Congress: As elected leaders representing communities across our nation, we are writing to urge you to take immediate action on comprehensive coronavirus relief legislation, including desperately needed funding for states, counties, cities, and schools, and an increase in states’ federal medical assistance percentage (FMAP). President Biden’s ambitious $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan will go a long way towards alleviating the significant financial strain COVID-19 has placed on our states, counties, cities, and schools, and the pocketbooks of working families. Working people have been on the frontlines of this pandemic for nearly a year and have continued to do their jobs during this difficult time. Dedicated public servants are still leaving their homes to ensure Americans continue to receive the essential services they rely upon: teachers and education workers are doing their best to provide quality education and keep their students safe, janitors are still keeping parks and public buildings clean, while healthcare providers are continuing to care for the sick. Meanwhile, it has been ten months since Congress passed the CARES Act Coronavirus Relief Fund to support these frontline workers and the essential services they provide. Without significant economic assistance from the federal government, many of these currently-middle class working families are at risk of falling into poverty through no fault of their own. It is a painful irony that while many have rightly called these essential workers heroes, our country has failed to truly respect them with a promise to protect them and pay them throughout the crisis.

Ingalls, Box 0476 Ann Arbor, MI 48109-0476 Dear Mr. Goldman, The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Hospital d/b/a Karmanos Cancer Center (Karmanos) received a BMT Certificate of Need approval relating to the acquisition of a Bone Marrow Transplantation Service from Harper University Hospital, effective November 7, 2005. Under the terms of the BMT Certificate of Need, Karmanos agreed to provide evidence, satisfactory to the Department of Community Health (Department), of approval as a Prospective Payment System (PPS)-exempt hospital within the time limits specified in Section 8(1)(g) of the Certificate of Need Standards relating to Bone Marrow Transplantation Services (the Standards). At the June 11, 2008 Certificate of Need Commission meeting, the commission took action on language to technically amend the Standards to extend the 24-month deadline to no later than the last session day permitted by the United States Constitution for the NEXT United States Congress then in Session AFTER THE EFFECTIVE DATE OF THESE STANDARDS Karmanos Cancer Institute strongly supports this action and requests that the commission take final action on the BMT standards at the September 16, 2008 Commission meeting. While Karmanos has not yet obtained the PPS exemption described in Section 2(1)(f) of the Standards, we continue to make significant progress toward that objective.
