And we did have to wait for it as it chugged its way up from Woodham Ferreers. YOUTH COUNCIL First event of the afternoon was the officiial opening of the Priory Fields by Rev. Mary Cottee. ‘It was a snip,’ she said. Following that, there wass live music from Spoiler and the Bocking BBrass Band. And all afternoon, plenty to see, to eat, to drinnk, to buy, to have a go at, take a channce on and lots of activities for children. Not forgetting the tug of war. Sadly, the grand finale, a maammoth, 50-a-side Where can our teenagers go??? football match didn’t happen. Possibly bbecause a number of the senior members of our community haven’t yet recovered from last year’s maatch! What do they have to do in our villages??

And so, the Community Fun Day camme to an end. Families drifted away, laden with coconuts, The Parish Council would love to hear a younger view on what people want and goodies of all sorts, and memories. Thhe traction engine got up steam and headed for home. It’s ideally for a Youth Council to be formed. This has proven very successful in other probably arrived by now. And as the volunteers packed up, they reflected on a veery successful Fun areas in Essex. Do any members in your family wish to become part of this?? Day. So a big thank you to all those who helped, and to all those who camee and made it so worthwhile. Please contact the Clerk who would love to hear from interested parties to suggest There’s no need to wait for next summmer to join in again. [email protected] Our sports partnership with the William de Ferrers School meant there were plenty of opportunities for our children to take part in a variety of sporting competitions and we were delighted with the high level of success our children had even when competing against much larger schools. We were also very proud of how hard they tried at everything they entered and the sporting way in which they conducted themselves. The Year 2 pupils taking part in a Mini Olympics in Chelmsford was an especially good occasion as so often special events are aimed at the older children.

There were also plenty of visits to different places to enrich the curriculum for all our children as much as possible including a very enjoyable residential visit to Scarborough for our Year 5 and 6 pupils.

The weather was something of a cause for concern as summer seemed to come and go very early on and there was then constant anxiety as to whether the rain would spoil long awaited events. We felt very blessed when the rain stayed away for our Summer Event and for our Sports Morning and Open Afternoon. Our Year 6 pupils doing their Cycling Proficiency training in Bicknacre only got damp and never soaked which was a bonus.

One of the most enjoyable indoor events of the term was the ‘Stars in their Eyes’ evening organised by the PTA. The quality of the performances was most impressive and the winning duo who did their version of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin were excellent. Needless to say St Mary’s being St Mary’s, certain members of staff put together an act – well, there had to be something to watch while the votes were being counted.

The Winners! The Teachers! The ‘gunking’ of the Headteacher Reception Children The summer term as it draws to its close is always tinged with sadness as we must say goodbye to Year 6 pupils. Most of the cohort had been with us from the very beginning of Year R, others had

www.wfandbpc.org.uk Page 16 www.wfandbpc.org.uk Page 9 joined along the way. We said our formal goodbyes at a special service in St Mary’s church and then all really let our hair down at a super Leavers’ Disco which had the whole school joining in with a special dance sequence to Queen’s “Don’t Stop Me Now” .

Now the new term has started, the summer term (and the summer holiday!) are merely a memory. The children all seem to have grown and the new Year 6 are suddenly very grown up. We have welcomed our new reception pupils into Class 1 and I guess all too soon the years will speed by and we shall be sending them off to their various secondary schools. Mrs S.M. Grocock free of charge. Currently 8 volunteers have come forward and we are waiting to hear from P.C. Gordon about a date for the training session. We would however, appreciate hearing from anyone else who would like to be part of the scheme. Photos from Danbury Juniors Medals Day in June 2008. In the meantime, the TAC have met with P.C. Graeme Gordon about developing a Community Speed Watch initiative in our two villages. This is a traffic-monitoring scheme that is co-ordinated by the police but managed New board and run by volunteers in the community - a similar scheme is in operation in .
