12 13 2018 SEASON PREVIEW

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – Although a series of early-season injuries short-circuited a promising start to West Liberty’s 2017 campaign, head coach Roger Waialae expects a brighter 2018 when the Hilltoppers return to West Family Stadium this fall. “I like our talent level and I’ve been around this game long enough to know our starters can compete against anybody,” Waialae said. “Obviously, it presents challenges when you get into your twos and threes but we were 2-1 before the injuries hit last year and I’m an optimist. The game rewards preparation, effort and consistency. When you commit to doing those things, the bounces - and the injuries - even out over time.” » The dean of Mountain East Conference coaches with 13 seasons at the helm and well into his third decade on the WLU grid staff, Waialae isn’t trusting to luck to propel the Black and Gold back into the thick of the MEC chase. » In addition to the several mid-year transfers who joined the program in time to participate in spring drills, the 2018 season finds a couple of new faces on the coaching staff. » Waialae brought former Concord and Lenoir-Rhyne head man Mike Kellar on board as the new offensive coordinator and hired Brian Hill as defensive line coach. Both men are former head coaches with more than two decades of collegiate coaching experience. “The best thing about adding Mike and Brian to the staff is that we found two veteran guys with great track records who know how to coach,” Waialae said. “Somebody asked me if I was worried about bringing in a former head coach to run the offense and I just shook my head. I hired Mike because I know he can make our team better. I want to win.” » The Hilltoppers return 15 starters and 40 lettermen from last year’s squad, which dropped seven of its last eight games after a 2-1 start. Four of those losses came by margins of 6 points or less and one was decided in overtime. “We were all frustrated by the close losses,” Waialae said, “but the guys I really felt for were the starters who couldn’t contribute due to injury. They were starting for a reason so as competitors it’s very hard for them to stand on the sideline unable to help. A lot of those guys are coming back and that frustration fueled their off- season conditioning. They can’t wait to start up again in August.” » The Hilltoppers were still looking to add a few players over the summer but here’s how things looked at the end of spring practice.

14 15 QUARTERBACKS “This was our strongest position coming out of spring,” DEFENSIVE LINE CORNERBACKS Waialae said. “Durbin’s probably the most well-rounded, » This will be one of the most interesting battles of Moffett’s really coming on after missing almost two » Graduation losses and injury issues have beset » Junior Josh Ojo returns at one corner but talented preseason camp. If he can’t go, we’ll with Morrison if he’s 100 percent.” Phillips showed they can move the team in the spring. Aaron Farmer and L.J. Sutton, sophomore Wisdom rotate several guys inside. 16 17 ROGER WAIALAE Head Coach University of Dubuque (1989) The dean of Mountain East Conference football coaches, Roger Waialae brings a 74-70 career mark into his 14th season as head man at West Liberty. Those 74 victories rank No. 2 on the school’s all-time list of head coaching wins, trailing only WLU Hall of Famer Joe Bartell, who went 118-55-11 from 1933 to 1956. After the past couple of seasons, the veteran Hilltopper grid boss is hoping a few more bounces will go West Liberty’s way. The Black and Gold’s 7-15 mark over that span could easily have been flipped as no less than nine of those 15 losses were decided by margins of a touchdown or less with three of the setbacks coming by a single point and two more in overtime. Injuries have also played a significant role in West Liberty’s recent challenges but the Hilltoppers have enjoyed more than their share of on-field success during the Waialae Era, finishing .500 or better in league play during nine of his 13 seasons and making their presence felt at the regional and national levels. Waialae’s 2010 Hilltoppers made history as the only NCAA Division II team ever to lead the nation in scoring and total offense in consecutive seasons. That group just missed an NCAA Division II playoff bid with a 7-3 record and tied for runner-up honors in the WVIAC with a 6-2 league mark – the fifth straight year Waialae’s Hilltoppers had finished first or second in the league. That 2010 team followed on the heels of the powerful 2009 squad which won a school-record 11 games while carving an unbeaten swath through the WVIAC and advancing to the NCAA Division II national quarterfinals. The 2009 Hilltoppers cracked the AFCA Top 25 for the first time in school history, finishing the year ranked No. 9 in the national poll. The team success during the Waialae Era has been matched at the individual level. Ben Staggs won the 2009 Gene Upshaw Award as the nation’s top NCAA Division II lineman while Zach Amedro shattered several NCAA Division II passing records and was a 2-time runner-up for the Harlon Hill Trophy as National Player of the Year. Waialae has coached 17 NCAA Division II All-Americans and 54 first-team All-Conference selections.
