Reproductive Biology of E Biology of Steindachnerina Insculpta (F Reproductive biology of Steindachnerina insculpta (Fernandez-Yépez) (Teleostei, Curimatidae) in Furnas reservoir, Minas Gerais, Brazil Vinicius M. Rua Dom José Gaspar 500, 30535-610 Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil. ABSTRACT The ‘saguiru’ Steindachnerina insculpta, a small teleost detritivorous fish species in Furnas reservoir, upper rio Paraná basin, Minas Gerais, Brazil, has a prolonged period of reproductive activity that extends from September to March, with fractionated spawning. During gonadal maturation, the females showed a low hepatosomatic index, suggesting that hepatic substances are possibly transferred from liver to ovaries. During the reproductive period, this fish had lower stomach repletion and coelomic fat indexes, indicating that the species eat less and consume more fat reserves. The weight of the ovaries influenced positively the condition factor (K1), since the lowest K2 values (without the gonads weight), were obtained during maturation, confirm- ing the influence of the weight of the ovaries upon the physiological condition of the females. KEY WORDS. Freshwater teleost fish; reproduction; spawning,. • Tempo and Mode of Lineage and Morphological Diversification in a Hyperdiverse Freshwater Fish Radiation (Teleostei: Characiformes)
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF Michael D. Burns for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Fisheries Science presented on April 17, 2018. Title: Tempo and Mode of Lineage and Morphological Diversification in a Hyperdiverse Freshwater Fish Radiation (Teleostei: Characiformes) Abstract approved: ________________________________________________ Brian L. Sidlauskas Characiform fishes form one of the most diverse freshwater fish clades in the world. Comprising more than 2000 species and distributed primarily in South America and Africa, characiforms vary dramatically in their ecomorphology. However, the evolutionary processes responsible for the immense ecomorphological diversity remains unknown. Recently, a study postulated that the unparalleled ecomorphological diversification arose through an ancient adaptive radiation, as evidenced by the clear segregation of morphological traits, such as body shape, among different trophic and habitat groups. However, no formal macroevolutionary analyses have been conducted on the entire order of Characiformes and the mechanism responsible for the diversity remains unknown. Here, I conduct a macroevolutionary analysis of body shape diversification to determine if Characiformes evolved through an adaptive radiation. I estimated the first time-calibrated molecular phylogeny for the order Characiformes, assembled the first ever geometric morphometric body shape dataset, and compiled an exhaustive trophic ecology database. In my second chapter, I combined these datasets to test whether body shape adapted

  • Ontogenic Events and Swimming Behavior of Larvae of the Characid Fish Sa/Minus Brasiliensis (Cuvier) (Characiformes, Characidae) Under Laboratory Conditions
Ontogenic events and swimming behavior of larvae of the characid fish Sa/minus brasiliensis (Cuvier) (Characiformes, Characidae) under laboratory conditions Jose Enemir dos Santos 1 Hugo Pereira Godinho 1 ABSTRACT. The larval ontogeny and swimming behavior of the characid fish Sa/minus brasiliensis (Cuvier, 1816) were studied under experimental laboratory conditions, from hatching to yolk absorption . At day I, the larvae were transparent, with sparse dendrite chromatophores and a we ll -developed adhesive organ on the head. The retinal epithelial cells were initiating pigmentation. The branchial arches were at the initial phase of differentiation. The larvae were able to perform only vertical displacements and, when resting on the tank bottom, remained in lateral decumbency, in groups of 3 to 15 larvae. On day 2, the mouth was open, with con ical teeth, and the digestive tube presented lumen and folded mucosa. The gaseous bladder and pectoral fins also were in differentiation. The larvae performed vertical and horizontal move ments, adhered to the water surface by means of the adhesi ve organ or formed groups of three to six on the tank bottom. On day 3, the adhesive organ turned dorsal, the retina was pigmented, the digestive tube mucosa showed goblet cells, and the yolk sac exhausted. The larvae were now scattering in the water column forming no groups on the bottom. KEY WORDS. Sa/minlls brasiliensis, larval ontogenic events, larval swimming behavior Knowledge on larval development of freshwater teleost is limited (SOUSA & SEVERI 2000). Regarding neotropical teleosts, the paucity of data is mainly due to the difficulty of collecting complete ontogenic series in the wild.
