Cark in Cartmel1 Banking in Cark-in Cartmel In today's high street the bank is becoming a rarity and 2017 will see the closure of another branching the Cartmel Peninsula; the National Westminster Bank in Main Street, Grange over Sands.2The banks are leaving the small market town high street but in the late nineteenth and for the first half of the twentieth century they were part of the local landscape in not only market towns, but even villages and hamlets such as Cark in Cartmel. Until 1826, banks were essentially private merchant banks but the Bank Act of 1826 permitted joint stock banks of issue with unlimited liability to be established. The Lancaster Banking Co. was one such bank which was set up in 1826 and existed until 1907 when it was taken over. For over seventy years, the hamlet of Cark in Cartmel, Cumbria had three banks ; the Lancaster Banking Co. which according to the Bulmer's Directory of 19113 was located at Bank House, Station Rd. and opened initially on Fridays ; the York City and County Banking Co. which became 1 HSBC archives April 18th 2017 2 The Westmorland Gazette, Thursday, March 31st. 2017 3 Bulmer's Directory of 1911. the London and Joint Stock Bank Ltd. was also located at 119 Station Rd. ; and the Bank of Liverpool and Martin's Ltd. which was located opposite at 114 Station Rd. All three banks were characterised by the fact that the banking premises occupied only one room of the building that they occupied and in addition were staffed by one member of staff , which in the case of the Midland and Martin's banks was the bank manager from either the Ulverston or Grange branch.

    Three Banks in Bristol The National Westminster Bank in Corn Street 1750-1980 814 NAT pam MftT Three Banks in Bristol The National Westminster Bank in Corn Street 1750-1980 the birth of the National Westminster Bank on 1 st January 1970 all three of its constituent banks — District, National Provincial and Westminster A — were represented in the centre of Bristol. The roots of the newly fashioned bank ran deep into the city's past. The National Provincial had grown in Bristol from five banks founded in the eighteenth century and the Westminster from two established in the first decade of the nineteenth. The Old Bank Pride of place goes to the Old Bank, the first full banking partnership to be established in Bristol. The partners — Onesiphorus Tyndall, Isaac Elton, Harford Lloyd, William Miller, Thomas Knox and Matthew Hale — opened the 'Bristol Bank' in Broad Street on 1 st August 1750 in the reign of George II. Once other banks opened in the city it became known as The Old Bank. Eventually the Old Bank's office had to be demolished for the construction of John Street at its junction with Broad Street and the bank moved in 1777 to the former Royal Insurance site in Corn Street; although at that time Leonard Lane marked the end of Corn Street and the bank's address was Clare Street. In 1794 the bank moved up Corn Street to begin its long occupancy of the present building at number 35. Charles Cave, to whose 'History of Banking in Bristol' we are much indebted, records that in 1816 two clerks employed in the Old Bank were taken into partnership — an example of industrial democracy within a year of the Battle of Waterloo.

Wilson paid little heedto the state'srole, but Cameronhas emphasizedin an historicalapproach the significanceof legislationfor bankingstructures and their performance [1970, pp. 9-10].This paperaccepts that, with regardto Englandand Wales, joint- stockbanking's early growth was strongly influenced by the timingof liberal- izinglegislation. Lothbury from outside the present bank premises Front cover picture National Westminster Bank 41 Lothbury at night 41 Lothbury 1834-1984 The 150th anniversary in 1984 of the opening of National Westminster Bank's Lothbury Office marks not only the founding of one of its major constituents -the former Westminster Bank -but a unique event in the history of City of London banking. The place-name Lothbury was attributed by John Stow the 16th century antiquary to the 'loathsome' noise made by founders and others working in the street at that time. This picturesque theory is now discounted; the derivation is believed to be much earlier from lode' or watercourse of the Wallbrook flowing to the Thames from Islington or, more probably according to Fairfield's 'Streets of London' 1983, from the 'burgh' or enclosed area belonging to Lotha's or Hlothere's people. Hlothere as a personal name was known in the 7th century. Certainly the Romans were in Lothbury, for remains were found at a depth of ten feet during rebuilding on the Bank site. However, the story of our office in Lothbury begins in 1833 when William Robert Keith Douglas gathered a group of business associates to consider founding a joint stock bank in London. Joint stock banking had been allowed to develop in England and Wales only since 1826 and legislation to allow it in London was still being contested in Parliament when Douglas and his friends issued the Prospectus of the London & Westminster Bank.

Banking, reputation and regulation in nineteenth century England and Wales Victoria Barnes and Lucy Newton Georgetown Law, Georgetown University, Washington and Henley Business School, University of Reading Abstract In this chapter, we investigate the motivations of bank directors and the mechanisms to ensure their virtuous behaviour. In particular, by drawing on two contrasting case studies, this chapter establishes what role the community played in determining behaviours of bank directors. Overall, we find that it was in the interests of joint-stock banks to govern themselves responsibly and honestly/virtuously in order to gain a trust and serve the wider community in which they operated in. Key words: joint-stock banks; directors; virtue; behaviour; common good 1 Introduction Following the financial crisis of 1825/6, legislation led to the establishment of joint- stock banks in competition to the existing private banking institutions. The 1826 Bank Act aimed, in principal, to stabilise the banking system in England and Wales. The joint-stock banks formed under this legislation differed greatly in comparison to existing private banks as they possessed a formal hierarchical structure with an elected board of directors, salaried managers, and were owned by shareholders. Private banks, in contrast, were privately owned and were limited to a maximum of six partners. Joint-stock banks established themselves successfully from 1826 onwards, to the extent that they eclipsed the private banks by the end of the nineteenth century and became the dominant form of retail bank in the UK by 1900.
