Most successfully, ABC Family uses Twitter to promote the teen drama Pretty Little Liars through the use of hashtags and celebrity interactions. This study analyzes Pretty Little Liars’ use of hashtags created by the network and by actors from the show. It examines how the Pretty Little Liars’ official accounts engage fans about their opinions on the show and encourage further discussion. Fans use the network- generated hashtags within their tweets to react to particular scenes and to hopefully be noticed by managers of official show accounts. -

From Disney to Disaster: The Disney Corporation’s Involvement in the Creation of Celebrity Trainwrecks BY Kelsey N. Reese Spring 2021 WMNST 492W: Senior Capstone Seminar Dr. Jill Wood Reese 2 INTRODUCTION The popularized phrase “celebrity trainwreck” has taken off in the last ten years, and the phrase actively evokes specified images (Doyle, 2017). These images usually depict young women hounded by paparazzi cameras that are most likely drunk or high and half naked after a wild night of partying (Doyle, 2017). These girls then become the emblem of celebrity, bad girl femininity (Doyle, 2017; Kiefer, 2016). The trainwreck is always a woman and is usually subject to extra attention in the limelight (Doyle, 2017). Trainwrecks are in demand; almost everything they do becomes front page news, especially if their actions are seen as scandalous, defamatory, or insane. The exponential growth of the internet in the early 2000s created new avenues of interest in celebrity life, including that of social media, gossip blogs, online tabloids, and collections of paparazzi snapshots (Hamad & Taylor, 2015; Mercer, 2013). What resulted was 24/7 media access into the trainwreck’s life and their long line of outrageous, commiserable actions (Doyle, 2017). Kristy Fairclough coined the term trainwreck in 2008 as a way to describe young, wild female celebrities who exemplify the ‘good girl gone bad’ image (Fairclough, 2008; Goodin-Smith, 2014). While the coining of the term is rather recent, the trainwreck image itself is not; in their book titled Trainwreck, Jude Ellison Doyle postulates that the trainwreck classification dates back to feminism’s first wave with Mary Wollstonecraft (Anand, 2018; Doyle, 2017). -

Disney, Latino Children, and Television Labor
International Journal of Communication 10(2016), 2616–2636 1932–8036/20160005 Starlets, Subscribers, and Beneficiaries: Disney, Latino Children, and Television Labor CHRISTOPHER CHÁVEZ ALEAH KILEY University of Oregon, USA Children’s television networks are invested with moral value not attributed to other networks, yet they depend on the labor of children to advance their economic goals. Using a case study approach of Disney’s cable channels, we found that Latino children perform labor on behalf of the corporation in three ways: as subscribers to Disney’s cable networks, as actors in programming designed to deliver those subscribers, and as beneficiaries in the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts. We found that the logic by which Disney assigns various forms of labor to different types of Latino children helps to advance the company’s economic goals, rendering Latino children hypervisible in some spaces and invisible in others. Keywords: children’s television, Disney, Latino, labor, media industry In 2012, executives at Disney launched a minor firestorm when they debuted Sofia the First: Once Upon a Princess, a 90-minute animated film that was intended to launch a new series on the Disney Channel. The movie (and the franchise that followed) centers on a young common girl who, through her mother’s marriage, suddenly becomes a member of the monarchy. Very early on in the promotion of Sofia, however, the public began to suspect that Disney had coded the new princess as Latina. Both the spelling of Sofia’s name (vs. the more Anglicized “Sophia”) and the darker complexion of Sofia’s mother led reporters to ask producers whether the character was indeed Latina. -

Steven Judd Is a Member of the Writers Guild of America
Steven Judd is a member of the Writers Guild of America. Was a staff writer Disney XD comedy series "Zeke and Luther." Zeke and Luther launched in June 2009 with the highest-rated primetime debut among kid demos in the 10-year history of the channel. His episode "A Very Hairy Problem" premiered on January 25th 2010. "MAC v. PC with a Native Twist" garnered Judd a semifinalist position in NBC/Universal’s Comedy Short Cuts Diversity Film Festival in 2007 and inclusion in an installment at the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian. In 2008, Judd was one of 14 selected from 2,500 script submissions for the Disney/ABC Writing Fellowship Program a paid writing position with ABC/Disney. The Disney /ABC Writing Fellowship has become one of the industry’s best known and well respected writing programs with over 250 alumni among Hollywood’s elite, including screenwriters, directors and television showrunners. In 2009 Judd was nominated Distinguished Alumni for the University of Oklahoma and asked to speak at the University as part of the Distinguished Alumni Lecture Series. In 2009 Judd won the Creative Spirt Award and direct his winning screenplay “Search for the World’s Best Indian Taco”. In 2011 it won Outstanding Short at the "North American Indigenous Image Awards" and "Best Narrative" at The Southwestern Association for Indian Arts (Indian Market), Best Short Film at AIFI. In 2011 the music video "The Storm" that he directed won Best Music Video at AIFI and is now in rotation at the Hard Rock Cafe's. -
