Scores of drunken students who ran riot on a cross-Channel ferry have been banned from returning with the company. Around 200 undergraduates stripped naked, smashed glasses and overturned furniture during a night of havoc on the P&O Spirit of France last week. The early-morning ferry was sailing from Dover to on Sunday April 1 when

students from the University of Manchester clashed with rivals from the Manchester Metropolitan University in the ship’s bar. Passengers, many with young children, had to be moved to a secure room for their own safety. Crew members said many of the students, who were going skiing, were drunk before they boarded the ship. It has been reported that students were seen dancing on the tables and were even exposing themselves. Men and women are believed to have been streaking and fighting at the bar and a P&O spokeswoman said they were forced to take all non-university passengers to an area of the ship which is usually an exclusive lounge so they were 'out of harm's way'.

The spokeswoman said: 'P&O can confirm that around 200 students from the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University caused disruption on an early morning sailing of its ship the Spirit of France on Sunday April 1. 'The company deplores the behaviour of this group of students, who were clearly drunk before they boarded the ship and whose actions on board were wholly unacceptable. 'P&O ferries has contacted both universities to advise that it will not be transporting these groups on their homeward voyage and to seek assurances that their behaviour is addressed.'

She added: 'Customers and staff on board the ship were appalled by the students' aggressive and lewd conduct, which should be stamped out by the authorities.' The company said it had reported the incident to the police. Discussions with the tour operators and the universities have since place and the spokeswoman added: 'We don't want to prevent people who go on these trips and behave themselves, but we don't want to end up with the scenario where we disturb other passengers as we saw last week.' Students at Manchester University have already been warned over their drunken behaviour. Last month they were told that they face expulsion following a growing number of complaints from local residents near student housing. Reports of loud, drunken parties has since seen the university intervene. Officials are believed to be in the process of writing a clause into their student charters, that will be introduced in September. That will see strict off-campus rules in place in a bid to deter students from their 'notorious' antics. Source : dailymail

Baltic sea index up on panamax, capesize rates The Baltic Exchange's main sea freight index tracking rates for ships carrying dry commodities rose on Wednesday, as Atlantic activity boosted panamax and capesize vessel rates. The main index, which factors in the average daily earnings of capesize, panamax, supramax and handysize dry bulk transport vessels, rose 16 points or 1.72 percent to 944 points. "In the near term, dry bulk freight rates are expected to remain rangebound with a positive bias," brokerage ICICIdirect said in a note on Tuesday. The brokerage said it expects the overall index to consolidate at current levels before resuming a gradual upward move, supported by higher demand for smaller vessels for trade of minor bulks and coal. "However, over the longer term, freight rates are expected to remain weak due to the high level of Chinese iron ore inventory and significantly high fleet addition over the next two years." The Baltic's panamax index gained 32 points or 3.08 percent to 1,072 points, with average daily earnings for panamaxes rising to $8,570. Panamaxes usually transport 60,000 to 70,000 tonne cargoes of coal or grains. The Baltic's capesize index climbed

1.96 percent to 1,561 points. However, earnings for capesizes, which typically transport 150,000 tonne cargoes such as iron ore and coal, have fallen about 75 percent this year. "A temporary reduction of export tariffs for Indian iron ore has resulted in a recovery in iron ore shipments from WC India to China over the last month," RS Platou Markets analyst Frode Morkedal said in a note to clients. "This has been to the benefit for the medium sized tonnage in the Pacific. On the contrary, less iron ore export from Brazil to Asia has affected the Capesize segment negatively." Growing ship supply has been outpacing commodity demand for quite sometime now and is widely expected to cap dry bulk freight rate gains in the coming months. The overall index, which gauges the cost of shipping commodities such as iron ore, cement, grain, coal and fertiliser has fallen about 46 percent this year. Source: Reuters

Cruise ship returns from trial Xisha voyage A cruise ship has returned from the Xisha Islands after investigating possible routes for developing tourism among islands in the South China Sea, the cruise operator said Tuesday. The Japan-imported Yexiang Gongzhu, or Scent of Princess Coconut, docked at a port in Sanya, a city in South China's island province of Hainan, on Monday after a three-day voyage to the northern shoals of the Xisha Islands, said Zhou Naijun, an official with Hainan Strait Shipping Co,Ltd, the cruise operator. Zhou said the company would fine-tune Xisha cruise tourism plans based on information collected during the trial sail. But he said there is still no timetable for officially launching the cruise plans.

Officials with the Hainan provincial government said they are drafting plans to develop tourism on the Xisha Islands, a chain of islands scattered along the western part of the South China Sea. Hainan Strait Shipping has been issued a license to operate the Haikou-Sanya-North Xisha route. Huang Peng, an official with the provincial transportation bureau, said that in the initial stage of tourism development, cruise ships will be allowed to sail to Yongxing Island but tourists will have to stay on board. "They will tour around the northern shoals of Xisha, enjoying the awesome views and the blue sea, before returning to Hainan," Huang said. "For the next stage, we will build bigger ships and make other improvements to meet the demands of high-end customers." The Scent of Princess Coconut, measuring 140 meters long and 20 meters wide, has been serving as a deluxe passenger and cargo ferry between south China ports since 1999. In order to operate the Xisha cruise route, it has been refitted with enhanced capabilities for withstanding high winds on the rough South China Sea.

The Xisha route spans a distance of about 180 sea miles, or about a 12-hour boat ride, and a round-trip cruise takes about two days, Zhou said. Over the years, China has repeatedly reiterated its indisputable sovereignty over the Xisha Islands and adjacent waters. China's State Council said in a regulation issued in late 2009 that the government would work to "actively, prudently and neatly" open the Xisha Islands to tourism. Huang said Xisha tourism development is "very important" because it is a declaration of sovereignty over the islands on the South China Sea that have been a part of Chinese territory since ancient times. He said tourism development in the area would also signal that the government of Hainan is exercising effective administration over the islands. Source : chinadaily

Taiwan navy ships enter Indonesia with flags flying Taiwan's Fleet of Friendship naval ships entered an Indonesian port with national flag flying, in accordancewith international practice, the Navy Command Headquarters clarified Wednesday in a statement. The officials were refuting a report in Next Magazine that Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) representative office in Indonesia had caved to pressure from China and instructed the navy fleet to lower their flags before entering Surabaya port for supplies and refueling late last month.

According to the magazine, the ships entered Surabaya port underthe cover of dark, after 6:00 pm on March 22, and left in a hurry the next day. But the Navy command said the fleet had entered Surabaya port at 10:00 a.m. Indonesia time with all flags on their sterns and bows raised, in accordance with international customs. Military authorities said that whenever the Fleet of Friendship visits a foreign country it adheres to principles of equality, respect and national integrity. Missions carried out by the Fleet of Friendship are usually supported by the foreign ministry, they said.

The Fleet of Friendship usually carries navy cadets on a two month pre-graduation training mission, giving them a chance to practice combat skills and navigation. The fleet has sailed to Middle East and South Africa on previous missions. Source : Focus Taiwan

The Dutch P 842 FRIESLAND arriving in Harlingen for the christening ceremony where the new Ocean Going Patrol vessel was christened April 11th - Photo : Wytze van de Witte - www.janvandewitte.nl (c) Sub HMCS Windsor back in water after 5 years HMCS Windsor, one of Canada's trouble-plagued submarines, will go into the water this week after undergoing five years of costly repairs. The Department of National Defence hopes to have the submarine in the water on Wednesday, Defence Minister Peter MacKay told reporters at a news conference in Halifax on Tuesday, making it the second submarine to begin sea trials this year after an extensive refit program.

Windsor has been in drydock since 2007. A refit was supposed to take two years, but it dragged on and costs skyrocketed. In 2010 alone, the navy spent $45 million repairing the boat when it had budgeted to spend just $17 million, according to documents obtained by CBC News last year. The documents itemize a litany of problems with the British-built sub, including bad welds in the hull, broken torpedo tubes, a faulty rudder and tiles that can fall from the boat's topsides (the area between the waterline and the deck).

Windsor is expected to be fully operational next year. Canada bought the submarine and three others from the British Royal Navy in 1998. There have been serious electrical problems, as well as rust and general deterioration in the subs, which had sat mothballed in salt water for the previous four years:

• HMCS Chicoutimi caught fire on its maiden voyage in 2004, resulting in the death of Lieut. Chris Saunders. It's not expected back in service for another two years. • HMCS Corner Brook ran aground last June during manoeuvres off Vancouver Island. Like Chicoutimi, it will be another couple of years before it's ready for service. • HMCS Victoria has had its share of problems too. It was at sea for only 115 days between 2000 an 2010. • Torpedoes tested • HMCS Victoria, based on the West Coast, was the first submarine to complete the refit. It successfully test- fired torpedoes last month.

The Royal Canadian Navy is expanding the number of submariners it has to 330 from 278 in the coming months, MacKay said. New training courses and personnel are meant to synchronize with the availability of the submarines, the minister said, with three of the boats scheduled to be in the water in the next 12 to 18 months. "There are courses in place to match the arrival of operational submarines," MacKay said. "That should give us sufficient personnel." Source : cbc / the Canadian press

Submarine Mississippi Completes First Voyage The United States' newest and most-advanced nuclear-powered attack submarine, Mississippi (SSN-782), returned to the Electric Boat shipyard Apr. 9 following the successful completion of its first voyage in open seas, called alpha sea trials. Mississippi is the ninth ship of the Virginia Class, the most-capable class of attack submarines ever built. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics.

During the alpha sea trials, Mississippi submerged for the first time and conducted high-speed runs on and under the surface to demonstrate that the submarine's propulsion plant is fully mission-capable.

The sea trials were conducted by Adm. Kirkland Donald, director Naval Nuclear Propulsion. Also participating in the sea trials were Rear Adm. David Johnson, program executive officer Submarines; Rear Adm. Richard Breckenridge, commander Submarine Group Two; Rear Adm. (Select) Michael E. Jabaley, program manager Virginia-class Submarine Program; Capt. Darlene Grasdock, supervisor of shipbuilding in Groton; Kevin J. Poitras, Electric Boat senior vice president Engineering and Design Programs; John Holmander, Electric Boat vice president Virginia Program; and Joseph A. Walsh, Electric Boat vice president Operations. Mississippi is commanded by Capt. John McGrath.

SHIPYARD NEWS

Emerging Nation Shipyard Delivers Largest Ship Yet to German Owners Ananda Shipyard and Slipways Ltd have handed over Enzian, an oceangoing multi-purpose vessel, to German company Komrowski Maritim Gmbh. The 110.9-metre long and 16.5-metre in breadth ship is the largest ever locally built ship for export, say Ananda. Bangladesh started exporting oceangoing ships in 2008, and Ananda was the first local company to export its first vessel to Europe, to a Danish company. At present, Ananda, Western Marine, Highspeed Shipbuilding, Dhaka Dockyard and Engineering Works, Khan Brothers Shipbuilding and Karnaphuli Shipyard are the leading shipbuildersof ocean-going ships for international buyers. These companies have received export orders of world-class seagoing vessels, both small and medium, worth $478 million with a deadline to deliver by 2013, according to Export Promotion Bureau data. Source: Ananda Shipyard Guangzhou Shipyard warns of 50% drop in Q1 profit Guangzhou Shipyard International is expecting a 50% year-on-year plunge in net profit for the first quarter as at 31 March 2012 due to the decline of the shipbuilding market. The shipyard had recorded a net profit of RMB174.89m ($27.7m) in the first quarter of 2011. “During the first quarter of 2012, as affected by the decline of the shipbuilding market, the prices of the ships under construction dropped sharply as compared to the same period last year, which resulted in the decrease in profits of the company derived from shipbuilding,” Guangzhou Shipyard said in a profit warning statement. Italy Shipbuilder Fincantieri Said to Be STX OSV Bidder Fincantieri SpA, the Italian state- controlled shipbuilder, is among final bidders for a stake in STX OSV Holdings Ltd. (SOH), the world’s biggest maker of offshore support vessels, said two people with knowledge of the matter. An investment fund also made an offer, one person said, declining to identify the bidder. South Korea’s STX Group, which is seeking to sell its 51 percent stake in Singapore-listed STX OSV, may conclude a deal next month, the person said, asking not to be identified because the process is confidential. STX Group’s stake is worth S$1.02 billion ($809 million) based on yesterday’s closing price, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. Singapore’s takeover guidelines require any buyer of more than 30 percent of a publicly traded company to make an offer for the rest of the stock. STX OSV, based in Alesund, Norway, has a market value of S$2 billion. The company may draw bids as energy exploration in new offshore fields bolsters demand for vessels used to move and supply rigs. Deep-water explorers are projected to spend a record $232 billion on new equipment in the next five years, according to Canterbury, U.K.-based researcher Douglas-Westwood. STX OSV is “definitely well positioned in terms of what they do and long-term industry demand trends,” said Vincent Fernando, an analyst at Religare Capital Markets (Singapore) Pte. “Deep water is clearly the future for the oil and gas offshore investment.” Fincantieri, which builds cruise ships, ferries and luxury yachts, is owned by Fintecna SpA, a company controlled by Italy’s finance ministry. A spokeswoman at Fincantieri declined to comment on the company’s interest in STX OSV. The offshore-vessel builder fell 1.5 percent to S$1.67 in Singapore

trading. It’s jumped 44 percent this year. Och-Ziff Capital Management Group owns 20 percent of STX OSV, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. STX Group, also parent of the world’s fourth-largest shipbuilder, said in October it plans to raise more than 1.3 trillion won ($1.1 billion) early this year by selling overseas assets and bonds to repay maturing debt. In January, the company said it hired JPMorgan Chase & Co. and Standard Chartered Plc to arrange the sale of its STX OSV stake. STX OSV won orders worth 11.1 billion kroner ($1.9 billion) last year, including 6.03 billion kroner in the fourth quarter. Its order book stood at 16.7 billion kroner at the end of December with deliveries stretching into 2016. The vessel-builder has yards in Europe, Asia and Brazil. It is building a second facility in the South American nation as Petroleo Brasileiro SA drills new wells off the country’s coastline. The company was bought by STX Group through the takeover of Aker Yards ASA, completed in February 2009. It sold a stake in an initial public offering in November 2010. Source: Bloomberg Korean Shipbuilders DSME Establish Smart Shipyard DSME has now established the fourth generation of cellular wireless standards (4G) in the shipyard with technology belonging to SK Telecom, and by this means DSME adopted its Long Term Evolution (LTE) wireless communication technology. In the project, DSME first rebuilt the shipyard’s communication infrastructure and Okpo shipyard’s 3G radio wave reception was enhanced, so that the mobile user could access the network even in sealed areas such as the engine room of the vessel. The company also installed more base stations to improve calling during a sea trial. Secondly, DSME developed new applications which can be used on smart phones or tablet PCs. By connecting Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Supply Chain Management (SCM) for use with this application, it is possible to record inspection results and track the material using only the material numbers on the spot. DSME has plans to issue a tablet PC to all staff involved in production and quality management in the first half of this year. Through this optimum IT environment, DSME has increased its employees’ work effectiveness and convenience. Source: DSME

Keppel signs five rig, $4.12 billion LOI with Sete Brasil Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M), through its subsidiaries, Keppel FELS Brasil S.A. and Estaleiro BrasFELS Ltda, has signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) with Sete Brasil Participações S.A. (Sete Brasil), for the design and construction of five semisubmersible (semi) drilling rigs based on Keppel's proprietary DSS 38E design. The rigs are

additional to the order for a DSS 38E for Sete announced by Keppel in December 2011. Like the first rig, the additional five rigs are intended to support Brazil's exploration of its vast proven offshore oil and gas resources.

The aim of the LOI is to facilitate Keppel O&M's preparation work on these potential projects, pending the signing of the final construction contracts. The total value of the contracts, if and when successfully agreed and executed between Keppel O&M and Sete Brasil, will be approximately US$4.12 billion. The DSS 38E design is an enhancement of Keppel's proven fifth generation deepwater solution, the DSS 38. With improved capability and operability, the DSS 38E is well suited to meet the stringent requirements of the deepwater "Golden Triangle" region --- Brazil, Africa and the Gulf of Mexico.

Sete Brasil's Chief Executive Officer, Mr Joao Carlos Ferraz, said, "We have entered into this LOI for five additional semis from Keppel, as we are confident of Keppel's strong track record in the design and construction of deepwater rigs, as well as their established yard in Brazil. It is full steam ahead for us in growing our fleet of rigs and vessels to support the E&P activities in offshore Brazil, and we need to partner shipyards like Keppel which can deliver the quality rigs in a timely manner which we are looking for."

Mr Tong Chong Heong, Chief Executive Officer, Keppel O&M, said, "We are pleased that Sete Brasil is moving ahead with the decision to order five additional semis on top of the first DSS™ 38E semi ordered late last year. With our proven track record at our Angra yard in Brazil, we believe we are in a good position to continue to contribute effectively to the growth of Brazil's oil and gas industry." Jointly developed and owned by Keppel's Deepwater Technology Group and Marine Structure Consultants, the DSS 38E design is an innovative and cost-effective design. It is rated to drill to depths of 10,000 m below the rotary table in 3,000 m water depth. Its operational displacement is approximately 45,000 tonnes.

Each rig will have accommodations to house a crew of up to 160. The vessel is designed to stay in position via eight Azimuthing thrusters and the configurations comply with the American Bureau of Shipping Dynamic Positioned System (DPS-3) requirements. The transaction mentioned above is not expected to have a material impact on the net tangible assets or earnings per share of Keppel Corporation Limited for the current financial year.

Keppel O&M established its shipyard in Brazil, BrasFELS, in 2000. It has gone on to achieve many firsts for the Brazilian offshore industry, including the construction of some of the world's largest floating production units, P-52, P- 51 and P-56 for Petrobras. The yard, located in Angra does Reis, is currently working on a number of projects, including the upgrade of two drillships for Noble, the construction of the P-61 Tension Leg Wellhead Platform for Petrobras and Chevron, as well as the building of the first DSSTM38E semi for Sete Brasil. It faces France across the narrowest part of the , and lies south-east of Canterbury; east of Kent's administrative capital Maidstone; and north-east along the coastline from Dungeness and Hastings. The surrounding chalk cliffs have become known as the White Cliffs of Dover, and the narrow sea passage nearby – the Strait of Dover.

Its strategic position has been evident throughout its history: archaeological finds have revealed that the area has always been a focus for peoples entering and leaving Britain. The name of the town derives from the name of the river that flows through River Dour. The town has been inhabited since the Stone Age according to archeological finds, and Dover is one of only a few places in Britain – London and Cornwall being other examples – to have a corresponding name in the French language, Douvres.

The PRIDE OF CANTERBURRY approaching Dover last Wednesday, This 1991 built 179 mtr long ferry was the second of four 'European Class' freight ferries ordered for P&O European Ferries' Dover-Zeebrugge route. Between 1992 and 2002 as the she sailed as the EUROPEAN PATHWAY (identical to European Seaway and European Highway) between Dover and Zeebrugge for P&O European Ferries and later P&O Stena Line. She was converted in the winter of 2002/spring 2003 and re-entered service as PRIDE OF CANTERBURRY (replacing the ageing P&OSL Canterbury). She currently sails from Dover to Calais. The installed 4 x Sulzer 8ZA40S Diesels are giving the vessel a speed of 21 knots, the vessel is capable to carry 2,000 passengers and 650 passenger vehicles or 120 15m freight vehicles

Services related to the Port of Dover provide a great deal of the town’s employment, as does tourism, although many of the former ferry services have declined.

The EUROPEAN SEAWAY departing from Dover, The 1991 built 179 mtr long European Seaway was the first of four freight ferries ordered by P&O European Ferries for the Dover-Zeebrugge route. She remained on the Dover – Zeebrugge route until 2000 when she alternated between the Calais and Zeebrugge routes. In 2003 she was moved to Dover – Calais full time after the Zeebrugge route closed but was laid up in 2004 returning to the route in 2005, the ferry is powered by 4 x Sulzer 8ZA40S Diesels for a speed of 21 knots, and is having a capacity of 200 passengers and 124 15m freight vehicles

The Dover Harbour Board is the responsible authority for the running of the Port of Dover. The English Channel, here at its narrowest point in the Straits of Dover, is the busiest shipping lane in the world. Ferries crossing between here and the Continent have to negotiate their way through the constant stream of shipping crossing their path. The Dover Strait Traffic Separation Scheme allots ships separate lanes when passing through the Strait. The Scheme is controlled by the Channel Navigation Information Service based at Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre Dover. MRCC Dover is also charged with co-ordination of civil maritime search and rescue within these waters.

The DUNKERQUE SEAWAYS is a ro-pax ferry owned and operated by DFDS Seaways. She is the first of three sister vessels (DOVER SEAWAYS and DELFT SEAWAYS) designed for the cross-Channel Dover - Dunkerque route, capable of making the crossing in 1 hour and 45 minutes. The Dunkerque Seaways is a Scandinavian designed vessel built at the Samsung shipyards in South Korea. The ship was originally named Maersk Dunkerque, delivered

on 30 September 2005, and made her maiden voyage on 9 November 2005. In 2010 Following the buy out of Norfolkline by DFDS, she was renamed Dunkerque Seaways

One of the sisters, named the DELFT SEAWAYS operates on the same route, powered by 4 × MAN 8L48/ 60B diesels (combined 38400 kW) for a max speed of 25 the ferries are capable to carry 780 passengers, 200 cars and 120 trucks

The Port of Dover is also used by cruise ship passengers, and the old Dover Marine railway station building, together with a newly built one cater for those passengers.

The 1850 passenger and 700 vehicles capacity NORMAN SPIRIT is a passenger and vehicle ferry operated jointly by LD Lines and DFDS Seaways between Dover and Calais.

Built as the Prins Filip for Belgian operator Regie voor Maritiem Transport (RMT) in 1991, the ferry entered service in 1992 on their route between Dover and Ostend. She remained in service with RMT when their UK port was switched to Ramsgate and until their operations ceased in 1997. Following a lay-up in Dunkirk, she was acquired by Stena Line in 1998, renamed Stena Royal and initially used on freight services between Dover and Zeebrugge on charter to P&O Stena Line. In 1999 P&O Stena Line decided to extend the charter and transferred the ship to its Dover-Calais route. Stena Royal was extensively refurbished to include the P&O Stena 'Brand World' concept and entered service on the Calais route as the POSL Aquitaine, following the naming pattern for P&O Stena Line vessels. In 2000, the POSL Aquitaine failed to stop whilst berthing at Calais due to a propeller fault. The crash caused many injuries and extensive damage to both the ship and berth. P&O Stena Line was a short-lived venture, ending in 2002 when P&O acquired Stena Line's share in the operation. However, the POSL Aquitaine remained in service, initially under the name P&O Aquitaine, then as the Pride of Aquitaine from early 2003 until May 2005 when she was withdrawn

following the introduction of two new P&O ferries. In October 2005, she began sailing on her present route between Portsmouth and as Norman Spirit. LD Lines, a French-owned company with existing ferry operations on the Mediterranean Sea, began this service following P&O's withdrawal from it the previous month.

In June 2006, Norman Spirit was reflagged to the British registry from the Italian second registry. She is now registered in Southampton rather than Genoa, although when she entered service with LD Lines she was registered in Dover. In September 2009, LD Lines announced that from November 2009 the vessel would be used on their service between Boulogne-sur-Mer and Dover. In March 2010 the Norman Spirit was chartered by TransEuropa Ferries. In a joint service between TransEuropa Ferries and LD Lines, the ship was renamed Ostende Spirit and began sailing between Ostend and Ramsgate. After changing the vessel name back to "Norman Spirit", it was announced on 28th November 2011 that DFDS Seaways would charter the vessel from LD Lines to operate on their Dover/Dunkerque service. This was to help alleviate unexpected traffic pressure on the route caused by the announcement of SeaFrance going into administration.

At 13:00 on 17th February 2012, the Norman Spirit was 'relaunched' by model and actress Kelly Brook and started a new service for DFDS Seaways and LD Lines. There are up to five return crossings per day on the Dover- Calais route. The ferry lines using the port of Dover are : to Calais: P&O Ferries to Calais: LD Lines to Dunkerque: DFDS Seaways

These services have been cut in recent years:

• P&O Ferries sailings to Boulogne (5 daily) were withdrawn in 1993 and Zeebrugge (4 daily) in 2002. • SNCF withdrew their three train ferry sailings on the opening of the Channel Tunnel. • Regie voor Maritiem Transport moved their Ostend service of three sailings daily to Ramsgate in 1994; the route now operates as TransEuropa Ferries • Stena Line merged their 20 Calais sailings into the current P&O operation in 1998. • ceased operations in 2005 and withdrew their 8 daily sailings. • SpeedFerries ceased operations in 2008 and withdrew their 5 daily sailings. • LD Lines ceased the Dover- service on 29 June 2009 and Dover-Boulogne 5 September 2010. Peter Herweijer – www.fotoserviceijmond.nl (c) Ferry company approves of study for Weymouth harbour A FERRY company is pleased to see council chiefs plan work for crumbling walls in Weymouth Harbour. Condor Ferries responded after Weymouth and Portland councillors committed to repairing the walls as quickly as possible to enable Condor Ferries to resume services next March.

Members of the management committee also called for consultant engineer Atkins to draw up a ferry terminal redevelopment plan to improve port facilities. Condor switched its services to Poole because of harbour damage. Borough councillors are confident the company will resume services from the resort next year and are facing a race against time to repair the harbour.

At a meeting last week they backed a move to spend £150,000 on design work for a harbour walls scheme. Condor Ferries' operations director Captain Fran Collins said: "We continue to liaise with Weymouth and Portland Borough Council regarding its plans for the future of Weymouth Port, as we do with all our ports. "Condor Ferries has a long and successful association with the area, operating services from Weymouth Port to the Channel Islands and Western France."

Capt Collins added: "We are pleased to hear that the council has agreed to allocate funding towards a design study for the quay walls and that the redevelopment of the port and its facilities is being given thorough consideration." Condor Ferries celebrates 25 years of passenger services between the UK and the Channel Islands today. The man who skippered the first sailing in 1987, Michael Dumont, was due to travel on a special anniversary sailing of the Condor Vitesse from Poole to the Channel Islands. Source : dorsetecho.co.uk

“We are proud to have been awarded for the delivery contract of the rotor tugs. Although T.O.S. personnel has been working on rotor tugs for harbour towing activities in Rotterdam for many years, this is our first rotor driven ship delivery”, says Rolf Kievits, Commercial Manager at T.O.S. The tugs sailed under full T.O.S. management and in close cooperation with SMIT. Due to the type of vessel and the travel distance the delivery crew made up a voyage and towing plan. During the stopover at Las Palmas, Spain, two chief engineers of URS joined the delivery crew. Later on also two captains of URS boarded at Vigo, Spain. During the last part of the delivery the URS crew was able to get familiar with the new build rotor tugs.

At the port of Antwerp Patrick de Jong and Danny de Munter (SMIT Towage), Rolf Kievits and Dennis van der Waal (T.O.S.) were present to welcome the delivery crews of both the SMIT KIWI and SMIT EMOE. T.O.S. has become a world known specialist in this line of work: delivering all types of ships worldwide. Maritime services including crewing solutions for maritime, offshore, oil & gas and renewable is the core business of T.O.S. Visit www.tos.nl for more information about all services. Source: T.O.S.
