Bible Study Outline

THEME: COVENANT WITH THE LIVING GOD SUB-THEME 3: God’s covenant with man (9) TOPIC: Marriage covenant TEXTS: Gen. 2: 18-25; Deut. 7: 1-4; 2 Cor. 6: 14-16 AIMS: i. to appraise the biblical basis for Marriage covenant, ii. to discuss contemporary challenges against God’s original plan and iii. to discuss practical ways of having successful marriage with the kingdom mind-set

INTRODUCTION: The Marriage covenant is the oldest relationship in the world, established by God in Eden for the union of a man and a woman as husband and wife. Man and woman are radically different physically, emotionally, and spiritually, yet they are designed by God to complement each other as they “become one flesh”. Despite the failure of Adam and Eve, God’s principles for marriage have remained the same –It is between a man and a woman; not a man and a man or a woman and a woman. It is also not about a human marrying an animal. Marriage symbolizes the greater relationship that exists between Christ and the true believer. Why then is it so difficult for some people to obey this Covenant principle?

STUDY GUIDE: 1. How do you understand the concept of the Marriage Covenant and how do the texts above agree with your understanding?

2. Why did God institute marriage with its associated responsibilities? Gen. 1: 27-28; 2: 18-20; 1 Cor. 7: 2-3, 10-16

3. What reason did Jesus gave for divorce and why? Matt 5:32; 19:9; Compare Job 24:15-17; Prov 7:10-23; 6:26-27.

4. Compare and contrast contemporary marriage challenges against the original plan of God in marriage and their consequences. Lev 20:10-16; Josh. 23: 11-13; Matt 19: 3-9; Rom. 1: 26-29. What are the solutions with the mind-set of the kingdom of God? 1 Cor. 7: 2-5; Col 3:5-6.

CONCLUSION: Although marriage will be only here on earth, God’s desire for His people in the Marriage Covenant is one-man-to-one-woman within the body of believers until they are separated by death. This can be difficult to Christians not heavenly-minded but Christians who are heavenly-focused will find it is not difficult.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: Only Christians heavenly-minded find it easy to obey and follow the biblical principles of marriage.

MEMORY VERSE: Gen. 2: 24 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

SPIRITUAL TONIC FOR THE WEEK Romans 5:1

"Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."

Thank You my Father and my God for making me right with You through the sacrifice of Your Son Jesus Christ. I know I have peace with You now. Today, I decree the same peace over all my life situations - marital, financial, spiritual, emotional and bodily. Let Your peace rule the hearts of my loved ones. ON THE OTHER SIDE An atheist is taking a hike through the woods when a huge bear starts chasing after him. The bear corners the atheist in a cave and he falls on his knees, shouting, ‘Lord, save me!’ God calls down, saying, ‘You hypocrite. All these years you’ve denied me and now you want my help.’ The atheist replies, ‘You’re right. It is hypocritical to proclaim myself a Christian after all these years, but could you meet me halfway and make the bear a Christian.’ ‘I suppose so,’ says God and gives the bear religion. The atheist breathes a huge breath and walks past the startled bear. The bear turns and bites the atheist in the neck, killing him. The bear then puts its paws together and says, ‘Lord, for this bounty...’

SOUL FOOD 16/2021

“Therefore, put on the full armour of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then… with the breastplate of righteousness in place.” - Ephesians 6:13&14

“For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.” - Matthew 5:20

The second piece of armour the believers need for the fight is the Breastplate of Righteousness. Historically, in the uniform of a Roman Soldier, the Breastplate was a soldier’s protection for his chest and abdominal areas including the shoulders and particularly the vital organs such as the heart and lungs. It was generally made of iron or bronze band with overlapping pieces of metal.

In Ephesians 6:15, Paul presents Righteousness as the believers’ breastplate armour to protects their vital spiritual organs during battle with the enemy. The human heart is a battlefield for the two forces of light and darkness. It is constantly under the struggle of who controls it. A believer who will be victorious must be dressed in the Breastplate of righteousness as he faces the struggle.

Theologically, Righteousness describes the state of being acceptable to God or being right with Him. In common parlance, it is the quality of being morally correct or justifiable. In the Old Testament, Righteousness is often connected to carrying out the law of God. The Psalmist identifies the Righteous as the “one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on His law day and night.” Psalm 1:1&2

Adam Clarke says: “As the breastplate defends the heart and lungs, and all those vital functionaries that are contained in what is called the region of the thorax; so (this) righteousness defends everything on which the man’s spiritual existence depends.” Every Christian has vital spiritual organ which needs to be guarded above all else. The Bible in Proverbs 4:23 says, “Keep your heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”

Jesus gives us insight into the nature of righteousness that protects the believers in the Sermon on the Mount, (Matthew 5:20) He says to be victorious in the battle of life, a believer’s righteousness must surpass that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law. In other words, the righteousness of the Pharisees and the teacher of the Law is defective and impotent to earn God’s backing in the fight against the enemy. Jesus denounced the “righteousness” of the Pharisees and the Teachers of the Law because it was based on outward, visible actions. It was not necessarily a righteousness based on the heart and on devotion to God. Theirs was a righteousness based on doing things to earn the praise of men. For example, they prayed and fasted, but did so to impress those who would see them and not out of love for God. They avoided adultery but lusted after those with whom they avoided adultery. They did not kill or commit violent acts against their enemies but held bitterness in their hearts toward them. They did all the right things which would convince their peers that they were righteous but not out of devotion to God. Breastplate of Righteousness is not about saying one thing and doing another. It is not about presenting oneself pious and holy in the sight of men while neglecting devotion and love for God and others. Rather, it is being morally right and justifiable before God who is Judge of all. Like Paul not having our own righteousness, which is of the law, but that which is through the faith of Christ, the righteousness which is of God by faith. (Philippians 3:9; also see Galatians 2:16). We know from the Scripture that our self-righteousness cannot protects our hearts, for “all our righteousness are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6).

The Breastplate of Righteousness is a gift obtained by faith (Romans 1:17, 5:17). In the Old Testament, the patriarch Abraham believed God, and his faith was counted to him for righteousness (cf Genesis 15:6; Romans 4:3, 20-22). In Isaiah 59, the Lord put on righteousness as a breastplate and went out to fight evil and corruption. “And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore, his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him. For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing and was clad with zeal as a cloak.” (Isaiah 59:16-17). The Lord shares this righteousness with His children, Paul in 2Corinthians 5:21 affirms that our righteousness comes only from God who made Jesus who knew no sin to be sin so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

To be right with God and be acceptable to Him, we must come to Him by faith through Jesus Christ our Righteousness. We are to let the light of Christ shine to those around us and follow the Lord’s leading in doing “good works” (see Matthew 5:16; Ephesians 2:10; Titus 2:14). Such works may involve standing firm against injustice (Leviticus 19:15), meeting the needs of the poor and fatherless (Psalm 82:3-4), and defending the helpless (Proverbs 31:8-9). These are all practical manifestations of the Lord’s righteousness.

I pray that the Lord will clothe us with His righteousness and lead us to victory in Jesus’ name. Amen.
