Juni - 28. Juli 1998) Summary The expedition ARK XIV/la of RV POLARSTERN and the Russian nuclear ice breaker ARKTIKA was the first attempt to reach the Alpha Ridge in the central Arctic Ocean directly with surface ships in order to sample the area with geoscientific, biological and geophysical methods. The Alpha Ridge is a submarine mountain chain discovered almost 40 years ago by American ice drift station Alpha. While the surrounding deep sea basin shows a water depth of more than 3000 m, the Alpha Ridge has water depths up to 1200 m only. The available scientific information from this region is at least 20 years old. Geophysical measurements and geological sampling were performed from drifting ice station operated by American and Canadian institutions. Four short cores contained material documenting the environment of the Amerasian Basin in its early phase of development. One of the objectives was to try to reach this positions again to retrieve longer cores in the area with the more modern equipment available on POLARSTERN. Although there will be only a maximum of 5 days available for any science on the ridge, all scientific groups were ready to go for retrieving new and exciting material from this area. At the 27th of June 1998 POLARSTERN left Bremerhaven to meet the Russian nuclear ice breaker ARKTIKA at the boundary of the Norwegian-Russian

    The East Greenland Current North of Denmark Strait: Part I' K. AAGAARD AND L. K. COACHMAN2 ABSTRACT.Current measurements within the East Greenland Current during winter1965 showed that above thecontinental slope there were large on-shore components of flow, probably representing a westward Ekman transport. The speed did not decrease significantly with depth, indicatingthat the barotropic mode domi- nates the flow. Typical current speeds were10 to 15 cm. sec.-l. The transport of the current during winter exceeds 35 x 106 m.3 sec-1. This is an order of magnitude greater than previous estimates and, although there may be seasonal fluctuations in the transport, it suggests that the East Greenland Current primarily represents a circulation internal to the Greenland and Norwegian seas, rather than outflow from the central Polarbasin. Keighren 12 September 2003 Declaration of originality I hereby declare that this dissertation has been composed by me and is based on my own work. 12 September 2003 ii Abstract 2002–2004 marks the centenary of the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition. Led by the Scots naturalist and oceanographer William Speirs Bruce (1867–1921), the Expedition, a two-year exploration of the Weddell Sea, was an exercise in scientific accumulation, rather than territorial acquisition. Distinct in its focus from that of other expeditions undertaken during the ‘Heroic Age’ of polar exploration, the Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, and Bruce in particular, were subject to a distinct press interpretation. From an examination of contemporary newspaper reports, this thesis traces the popular reception of Bruce—revealing how geographies of reporting and of reading engendered locally particular understandings of him. Inspired, too, by recent work in the history of science outlining the constitutive significance of place, this study considers the influence of certain important spaces—venues of collection, analysis, and display—on the conception, communication, and reception of Bruce’s polar knowledge.     ARTICLE LESSONS FROM EXPERIENCE Echo Sounders versus Air Bubbles in Research Vessels Within echo sounding circles it is well known that air bubbles may have a negative effect on echo sounding systems. This article briefly presents the German way of dealing with air bubbles from sweep-down and cavitation processes as well as our experiences with the last three large research vessels (RVs Polarstern, Meteor and Maria S. Merian). The practical experience resulted in the development of an optimised new hull form for the replacement of RV Sonne. The new ship is now under construction at a German shipyard and will be delivered in autumn 2014. The basis of all echo sounding systems is the directed transmittance of sound into the water at different frequencies and the recording of its reflection through suitable receivers. The reflection (echo) occurs at boundary layers e.g. within the water column, at sediment surfaces or fishes. Even boundary layers within the sediment can be recorded in this way. Naturally, any air or other gas bubble within the water possesses a rather sharp sound- reflecting boundary layer too. So, as long as there is only water through which the sound is travelling, everything is fine and records are worth reading. But as soon as air or any other gas (e.g. methane) in the form of small and large bubbles (size range might be between less than 1mm to more than several cm) gets in the way of the sound, it is stopped and/or redirected. No or only bad echo sounding records are the result.
