Some Albums to Keep Your Toes Warm This October
Some Albums To Keep Your Toes Warm This October Bittles‘ Magazine | Record Review As Autumn wraps her chilly arms around the country we look to music for the comfort that we can no longer get from happiness or the sun. Luckily, this time of year tends to be when great new bands get off their asses and go out on tour, while it also seems like there is another fantastic new album to delight us every single day. By JOHN BITTLES In fact, there are so many great new releases this month that there is absolutely no chance of squeezing them into one single article. This week alone I will be reviewing Caribou, Gui Boratto, The 2 Bears, A Winged Victory For The Sullen, and tons more. While, next week we’ll have new albums by Slam, Distal, Huxley, DJ Koze among others. So, make yourself comfy, turn off the phone, geta nice glass of wine, and let us begin. As lead single ›Can’t Do Without You‹ won both our hearts and minds this summer it is only fair to commence with ›Our Love‹, the much anticipated follow-up to ›Swim‹ by Caribou. The aforementioned ›Can’t Do Without You‹ opens proceedings in, sadly, edited form, yet that doesn’t stop it from being one of the most touchingly beautiful four minute pop song you are likely to hear all year. Next track ›Silver‹ keeps the emotional trance elements to the fore, while alternate sounds are explored with ›All I Ever Need‹ utilizing UK Garage style bass over Dan’s falsetto and the title track›‹ recalling a time when the Es were good, and hugging strangers was par for the course. -

Schiavo Kurt Cobain (1967-1994) musician, artist songwriter, and founder of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band, Nirvana, was dubbed, “the voice of a generation”; a moniker he wore like his faded cardigan sweater, but with more than some distain. Cobain’s journey to the top of the Billboard charts was much more Dickensian than many of the generations of fans may realize. During his all too short life, Cobain struggled with physical illness, poverty, undiagnosed depression, a broken family, and the crippling isolation and loneliness brought on by drug addiction. Cobain may have shunned the idea of fame and fortune but like many struggling young musicians (who would become his peers) coming up in the blue collar, working class suburbs of Aberdeen and Tacoma Washington State, being ii on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine wasn’t a nightmare image. Truck, which had been the centrepiece of Oxford’s live music calendar since 1998, surviving both floods and foot and mouth crises, succumbed to financial woes last year, going into administration in September. However, the event has been taken over by the organisers of Y-Not Festival in Derbyshire, which won Best Grassroots Festival 2011 at the UK Festival Awards. The new organisers hope to take Truck back to its roots as a local community festival. In a statement on the Truck website, Joe and Robin announced, ““We have always felt a great responsibility for the integrity and sustainability of Truck Festival, which grew so quickly and with such enthusiasm from very humble beginnings in 1998. The launch of Loghaven Artist Residency is the culmination of years of planning, research, design, and input from artists, arts leaders, and the Alliance of Artist Communities. The residency features artist housing in historic, rehabilitated log cabins, as well as a newly constructed Performing Arts Studio and Visual Arts Studio, and a 3,900-square-foot Gateway Building with additional studio space and facilities for artists—all located on 90 acres of woodland, minutes from downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. Loghaven Artist Residency offers: • Facilities for dancers and theater makers—there are limited residencies that offer dancers and theater makers the facilities that are essential for their work. Loghaven has a professionally designed Performing Arts Studio and a Multidisciplinary Studio to support these practitioners. • Spaces for collaborative artist groups—the number of artists working collaboratively has grown significantly, and few residences are designed to accommodate this type of practice. Loghaven’s studio spaces serve the needs of collaborative teams: all are large enough for group work, and three of the artist cabins are suited for an intensive live/work experience for a collaborative team. -

THE KEYBOARD WORKS AND HYBRID CREATIVE PRACTICES OF ! TRISTAN! PERICH! ! David Benjamin Friend, D.M.A.! Cornell University,! 2019! ! !This dissertation examines the life and work of Tristan Perich, with a focus on his works for keyboard instruments. Developing an understanding of his creative practices and a familiarity with his aesthetic entails both a review of his personal narrative as well as its intersection with relevant musical, cultural, technological, and generational discourses. This study examines relevant groupings in music, art, and technology articulated to Perich and his body of work including dorkbot and the New Music Community, a term established to describe the generationally-inflected structural shifts! in the field of contemporary music that emerged in New York City in the first several years of the twenty-first century. Perich’s one-bit electronics practice is explored, and its impact on his musical and artistic work is traced across multiple disciplines and a number of aesthetic, theoretical, and technical parameters. This dissertation also substantiates the centrality of the piano to Perich’s compositional process and to his broader aesthetic cosmology. A selection of his works for keyboard instruments are analyzed, and his unique approach to keyboard technique is contextualized in relation to traditional Minimalist piano techniques and his one-bit electronics practice." ! ! Mikky Ekko Has Come Home. He Recorded His 2015 Debut Album
Mikky Ekko has come home. He recorded his 2015 debut album, Time, in places as far-flung as London, Stockholm, and Los Angeles, plus any point on the compass where inspiration struck while he was on tour with Justin Timberlake, One Republic and Jessie Ware. But he wanted to record Fame, his next album, in the city that had proved both a permanent address and an inspiration for him since moving there in 2005 to attend college. It’s said that people have lucky cities, a geographic location where they seem to flourish or feel that they are their best selves. Although born in Shreveport, Louisiana, with its rich history of country rock and electric blues, Ekko found such a place in Nashville. It allowed him the freedom to be who he wanted to be — starting with those early gigs he played at 12th and Porter with slashes of red painted across his chiseled face. It informed the haunting music of his largely a cappella 2009 dreamscape Strange Fruit, a five-song EP he recorded while still a student at nearby Middle Tennessee State University that had far more in common with Brian Eno than it did Billie Holiday. A restless creator — sometimes writing two songs a day, starting most days at 4:45 am — Ekko quickly followed up Strange Fruit with two companion EPs the next year: Reds and Blues. One of the songs on Reds, "Who Are You, Really,” made its way to underground beatsmith Clams Casino, known mainly for his work with ASAP Rocky, Lil B and The Weeknd. -
