Films like When Harry Met Sally take advantage of the cryptic nature of female orgasm to point to how easy it is to fake. Biologists, too, have problems with female orgasm, or at least its evolution, because it is an enigmatic trait compared with many oth- ers.Women can conceive without orgasm, making it less directly connected with reproductive success and hence fitness than male orgasm, which virtually always accompanies ejaculation.What is more, most women do not experience orgasm during so-called “unassisted” intercourse, in other words, without additional stimulation of the clitoris before, during, or afterwards. Freud thought that this type of orgasm was more mature than one resulting from clitoral stimulation, and although his ideas have largely been debunked, they have left a legacy of assign- ing ranks to female sexual response, so that women worry that their orgasms are somehow inferior or abnormal. The orgasm has also taken its place in the battle about adaptationism, with scholars debating whether female orgasm evolved through natural selection in much the same way as morphological traits, because they enhanced the ability of Department of Biology, University of California, Riverside, CA 92521. -

In contrast, the following study details species-typical and universal aspects of human sexuality that must be adequately theorized if an accurate model of the ideological forces impacting Victorian sexuality is to be fashioned. After a short survey of previous scholarly projects that examine literature through the lens of biology—much of it marred by an obvious antipathy toward all attempts to discover the involvement of ideology in human behavior—this study presents a lengthy primer to the modern study of evolutionary psychology, behavioral genetics, and human sexuality. -

Although mathematical models attempting to explain this transition have been published as early as 1932, the 1972 model of Parker, Baker, and Smith is considered to be the first explanation for the evolution of anisogamy that is consistent with modern evolutionary theory. The central idea of the model is ingenious in its simplicity: selection simultaneously favours large gametes for zygote provisioning, and small gametes for numerical competition, and under certain conditions the outcome is anisogamy. In this article, I derive novel analytical solutions to a 2002 game theoretical update of the 1972 anisogamy model, and use these solutions to examine its robustness to variation in its central assumptions. Combining new results with those from earlier papers, I find that the model is quite robust to variation in its central components. This kind of robustness is crucially important in a model for an early evolutionary transition where we may only have an approximate understanding of constraints Citation: Lehtonen, J. 1 [August, 2013] Foreword to 20th Anniversary edition of Robin Baker’s Sperm Wars Todd K. Shackelford Oakland University 2 As an undergraduate at The University of New Mexico in the early 1990s, I took a course on the evolution of human sexual behavior with evolutionary biologist Randy Thornhill. This course would change my life, setting me on a career path in academia focused on investigating the evolutionary psychology of human sexuality. I loved the course, all of the material. But it was Randy’s presentation and discussion of a particular area of research that most profoundly affected me, an area of research that I have pursued as an evolutionary psychologist for more than two decades. About midway through the term, Randy introduced the research on human sperm competition conducted by evolutionary biologists Robin Baker and Mark Bellis. I could not believe what I was hearing—it was amazing! Baker and Bellis had provided the first empirical evidence that humans have evolved adaptations to sperm competition. Their work indicated, for example, that men adjusted the number of sperm in their ejaculates as a function of the proportion of time they spent apart from their regular partner (a proxy for the risk of sperm competition) since the couple last had sex. And women contrived to place the ejaculates from different men into competition. What’s more, women deployed their orgasms to bias the retention of the sperm from favored men. The evidence was there, published in the most prestigious journals in evolutionary science. Having spent most of my undergraduate career in psychology, learning mostly about humans, this was my first exposure not just to sperm competition in humans, but to sperm competition, more generally. -

Sperm Wars, Sex Hormones, and the Female Orgasm: An Evolutionary Look at Human Sexual Behavior Joshua Wesalo, Class of 2013 Bonchek College House October 14, 2012 Joshua Wesalo, a double major in chemistry and economics (with an applied math minor), hopes to earn an MD-Ph.D and eventually to contribute to the advancement of medicine as a physician- scientist. He ran varsity Cross Country and Track & Field at F&M, while playing piano, trombone, and guitar in his spare time. Josh hails from Owings Mills, Maryland. Sperm Wars, Sex Hormones, and Female Orgasm “Will the Junto Society find my paper interesting?” This question has plagued many Junto Society members with doubt as they converted their scholarly interests into essays. I know that you will find this paper interesting. Thanks to natural selection, I am certain of your interest. During this meeting, those in this room will produce approximately 360 million mature sperm, which is more than twice the female population of the entire United States. In the world, men will produce 7.38x1016 sperm during the same interval1. Barring the exception of the appendix, humans have evolved for energy efficiency. Every organ has its function, and every physiological process yields an advantage to justify its energetic cost. If all it takes is one sperm to fertilize an egg, it makes no sense—on a surface level—for men to produce so many sperm. Granted, men put these to use, considering that the average ejaculate contains enough sperm to impregnate every woman in the country twice over. But why so many sperm? Tonight, I plan to answer the “why so many sperm?” question.
