Jesus told Peter, “Go to the sea, drop in a hook, and take the first fish that comes up. Open its mouth, and you will find a coin worth twice the Temple tax. 1 Ted Kirnbauer Luke 22:54-71 8/27/17 Jesus' betrayal and arrest was known and announced long before the events in the Garden of Gethsemane took place, so the arrest itself was anti-climactic. All four Gospels record the trial of Jesus. According to the Gospel of John, Jesus was first taken to Annas, the former High Priest, who still enjoyed dignity and power in the Jewish world (Jn. 18:13). Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas, the acting High Priest who filled that position from 18 AD to 36AD. Caiaphas was the one who first said clearly that it was a political necessity to murder Jesus (Jn. 11:49-50; 18:14). Peter denied Jesus at the house of Annas (Carson, Gospel of John, 582). Walking Through Holy Week As Friends of Jesus
WALKING THROUGH HOLY WEEK AS FRIENDS OF JESUS Introduction In the Gospel according to John, Mary, Martha and Lazarus represent the seed of the beloved community that rises and grows after Jesus’ resurrection. Stories about them in John’s Gospel seek to reveal to us, the later believers, what disciples of Christ living together in Christian community might look like. In the scene from Monday’s reading (John 12:1–11), we see Mary, Martha and Lazarus extending hospitality to Jesus, welcoming him into their home. This openness of heart is the key to belief and the essence of faith. Then the anointing of Jesus’ feet by Mary is an example of devotion and a kind of faith profession. The writing is on the wall, so to speak, Jesus’ death is imminent. But the way of self-giving love is hard to accept and even harder to live––as we will see in the days that follow for the disciples of Jesus. Yet Mary understands and willingly surrenders herself to the path of sacrificial love. Mary is a true believer, a beloved friend of Jesus. As we move through Holy Week, what will it mean for us to express hospitality to Jesus? to open our hearts and minds to his love and his way? I pray our devotion to and friendship with Jesus will grow and strengthen. About the Scripture Readings Since we will not be gathered for worship on Good Friday, I have chosen to veer somewhat from the lectionary readings for this week in order that we might hear more of the narrative over these days. -

Lent Vespers 1 16 March 2014 Concordia Lutheran Mission Terrebonne, Oregon “God Delivers Christ from Ruin and Sets His Foot upon a Rock for Us and for All Men.” He brought Me up also out of an horrible pit, out of the miry clay, and set My feet upon a rock, and established My goings.1 Psalm 40:2 Introduction What is this pit of horrors from which Christ is delivered? The pit of horrors is God’s everlasting wrath over the sins of men. Similarly, the miry clay is the terra infirma (unfirm earth, quicksand as it were) of God’s abandonment of Christ because of the sins of men. God, however, delivered Christ from these terrors based on Christ’s Merit for us, namely, Christ’s waiting patiently on the Lord, obeying the Lord faithfully even in the midst of these terrors. God replaced the unfirm ground of His forsaking Christ with the firm Rock of God’s good favor won by Christ’s obedience. This Rock and Sure Footing stretches out in all directions forever because God has established Christ’s Ways. Through this Work of Christ’s in our behalf, God re-stores all men. Men are no longer forsaken by God to the pit of horrors and everlasting quick sand because of their sin and are Placed on the Solid Ground and Secure Footing of Christ. This Blessed Work God accomplishes through the Rock that is the Gospel, i.e. God’s Word and Sacraments2. Introduction There were three crosses erected at Calvary: o The first cross was meant for a criminal. We don’t know his name. He died on the cross. o The second cross was meant for a criminal. We don’t know his name. He died on the cross. o The third cross was meant for a criminal. And we do know his name: . BARABBAS. He didn’t die on the cross but was released from prison. o All three deserved this sentence to death. “We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve” (Lk 23:41). But Christ took the place of Barabbas and gave his life as a ransom: “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many” (Mt 20:28; Mk 10:45; 1 Tim 2:6) — “now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant” (Hb 9:15). The context, form and structure, theological, technical and hermeneutical notes given in this sermon outline overlap with other sermon outlines taken from the Gospel of John. SCENE #1: John 18:1-14 EVANGELIST: When Jesus had finished praying, he left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side there was an olive grove, and he and his disciples went into it. Now Judas, who betrayed him, knew the place because Jesus had often met there with his disciples. So Judas came to the grove, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons. Jesus, knowing all that was going to happen to him, went out and asked them, JESUS: Who is it that you want? EVANGELIST [SOLDIERS]: “Jesus of Nazareth,” they replied. JESUS: I am he. EVANGELIST: And Judas the traitor was standing there with them. When Jesus said, "I am he," they drew back and fell to the ground. Again Jesus asked them, JESUS: I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go. EVANGELIST: This happened so that the words Jesus had spoken would be fulfilled: "I have not lost one of those you gave me." Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it and struck the high priest's servant, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus. But Jesus commanded Peter, JESUS: Put your sword away! Shall I not drink the cup the Father has given me? EVANGELIST: Then the detachment of soldiers with its commander and the Jewish officials arrested Jesus. They bound him and brought him first to Annas, who was the father-in- law of Caiaphas, the high priest that year. -
Did Jesus Forbid Ambition for Greatness in Luke 22:24–30? an Intercultural Reconsideration

AN INTERCULTURAL RECONSIDERATION Dr. George O. Folarin William Sunday Ojelade Department of Religious Studies, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State, Nigeria Abstract This is an Intercultural study of aspiration for greatness in Luke 22:24-30 first in the initial context of the first century Roman culture, and then in the contemporary Western Nigerian cultural context. The study looks at the common scholarly argument that the disciples were contending for superiority among themselves and that Jesus used this incident to correct their fight for power. After re-examining the text in the two cultural contexts, the study concludes that there is nothing condemnatory of aspiration for power in the text, but that the text challenges Jesus’ disciples to use the power inherent in it for and in his service. Keywords: Aspiration-ambition; greatness; power; servant; eschaton; and judgment. Introduction The issue of ambition or aspiration for greatness is contentious among Christians and the theological view of each Christian scholar is obviously reflected in his interpretation. Luke 22:24-30 has particularly been unfairly exploited by those who use the alleged condemnation of ambition for leadership by Jesus to subject their followers to perpetual followers and dependants. Expectedly therefore, many Christians remain at the level of followership. They rarely develop to become leaders since they are discouraged from aspiring to greatness. It is therefore common in Nigeria for leaders even in the church to pass down leadership baton in churches to relatives or close associates. -

The Passion According to St. John John 18:28-19:16a Narrator Pilate Temple Authorities Jesus Crowd (all) Soldiers Narrator: At daybreak, they led Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. The Temple authorities didn’t enter the Praetorium, for they would have become ritually unclean and unable to eat the Passover meal. So Pilate went out to them and asked, Pilate: What charges do you bring against this person? Temple Authorities: We wouldn’t have brought him to you if he weren’t a criminal. Pilate: Take him yourselves, and judge him by your own Law. Temple Authorities: We don’t have the power to put anyone to death. Narrator: This was to fulfill what Jesus had said about the way he was going to die. So Pilate re- entered the Praetorium and summoned Jesus. Pilate: Are you the King of the Jews? Jesus: Do you say this of your own accord, or have others told you about me? Pilate: Am I Jewish? It is your own people and the chief priests who hand you over to me. What have you done? Jesus: My realm is not of this world; if it belonged to this world, my people would have fought to keep me out of the hands of the Temple authorities. No, my realm is not of this world. Pilate: So you are a King? Jesus: You say I am a King. I was born and came into the world for one purpose – to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who seeks the truth hears my voice.
