Highlights of Provence Trip Notes Current as of: September 13, 2019 - 14:16 Valid for departures: From January 1, 2017 to December 31, 2022 Highlights of Provence Trip Notes Ways to Travel: Guided Group 8 Days Land only Trip Code: Destinations: Adventure Holidays in France Min age: 16 TEA Leisurely / Programmes: Walking & Trekking Moderate Trip Overview A stunning part of Provence and relatively untouched by tourism, Greoux les Bains offers the perfect base for a walking holiday. We stay in the comfortable Hotel des Alpes in the heart of the town, allowing us to enjoy the variety of restaurants, cafes and shops on our doorstep. During the week we explore the region with a mixture of walks directly from the hotel or following a short private bus transfer. With the bustling market town of Forcalquier, the dramatic Verdon Gorge and depending on the season, elds of lavender or poppies just a short drive away, there is much to be explored. At a Glance 5 days centre-based walking Well marked trails and paths Altitude maximum 1300m, average 700m Countries visited: Adventure Holidays in France Trip Highlights The beautiful Verdon Gorge Local markets and villages Relaxed daywalks Is This Trip for You? This trip is graded Leisurely/Moderate - Level 2. Although the pace of the walks is leisurely and there is plenty of time to rest and enjoy the views, we place this itinerary at the tougher end of the leisurely/moderate scale due to several of the walks heading to or descending from hilltop villages. You should expect some ascent and descent and we recommend reading the daily itinerary carefully. The terrain and type of path track will vary from manmade paved tracks to tarmac. All walks take between 4 and 6 hours including lunch stops and require a moderate level of tness. If you wish to take an extra day out of the programme you can choose to relax by the hotel pool or explore the shops and cafes of Greoux les Bains. All walks are optional so should you choose to have an extra day relaxing by the pool or exploring the area independently this will not be a problem. You may find our Fitness Training Guide a useful reference. (inquire for details) Following a review of all our trips we have categorised this trip as generally not suitable for persons of reduced mobility. However if you are a regular traveller on such trips, please contact customer services to discuss the trip and your personal condition. Group Throughout the week you will be accompanied by a local French leader, although they will not be staying in the hotel they will coordinate the airport transfers, guide all walks and will join the group for a farewell dinner in the hotel at the end of the week. Adult min age: 16 Min group size: 5 Max group size: 15 Itinerary Provence Land Only Itinerary Day 1 Start Greoux-les-Bains. Start at the Hotel des Alpes, Greoux-les-Bains. The surrounding countryside is beautiful, especially in the spring when the almond trees are in bloom. In the summer, aromas of lavender and thyme waft through the air conrming the fact that Valensole is one of the most important producers of lavender in Provence. After time for exploring the myriad of stalls, we head on to see the Mourres Plateau. Follow a walkway along the lower Verdon Gorge with views of the sparkling turquoise waters. Les Gorges du Verdon, also called "Le Grand Canyon du Verdon" or Verdon Canyon, define the border between the département Var and Alpes de Haute Provence. The Verdon River carved a deep canyon into the limestone cliffs here for about 21 km. It is much smaller than the Grand Canyon but it's Europe's deepest. This is a nature conservation area, the Parc Naturel Regional du Verdon. The Parc Naturel Régional du Verdon was inaugurated in 1997 finally recognising and officially protecting the special nature of the region. Les Gorges du Verdon is not only an exceptional natural site, we find a lot of beautiful typical villages through the Verdon River. Villages and towns of character such as Riez-la-Romaine, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, Castellane, Entrevaux or Annot ( the villages ranked as "villages et cités de caractère") unfold on the hills covered with oaks, vineyards and orchards. La Palud sur Verdon is heaven on heart for climbers from all over the world, Castellane is an exceptional site, overlooked by Notre- Dame-du-Roc or Entrevaux, a medival town, has kept its ramparts and its citadel built by Vaudan.

  • Report on 2011 Geological Mapping Project for the Class of 2005 Mapping Fund Castellane
Report on 2011 Geological Mapping project For the Class of 2005 Mapping Fund Castellane Nathan Allen & Emma Woodward Overview of the mapping area Castellane in the southern sub-Alpine chains – approximately 100km NW of Nice in southeast France – is world-renowned for its ammonite fauna (including a stratotype location) and lies in the ‘Réserve Géologique des Alpes de Haute Provence’. The mapping area was centred around the villages of Chasteuil and Taloire at the head of the spectacular Verdon gorge, where the Mesozoic strata record a facies shift from platform to basin (in both time and space); since deformed during the Pyrenean and Alpine orogenies. Project objectives • Identify and define lithological units of the area • Interpret the transition between platform and basin in both time and space; and determine the depositional environments • Investigate structural relationships and attempt to deduce deformation history This work was carried out over July and August 2010 (see below). Total duration of field trip 35 days Duration of fieldwork 28 days Total area mapped 34km2 Transport to and from mapping area On foot Transport around mapping area On foot Hours spent daily in field 06:00 – 16:00 Temperature range 4˚C (early morning) – 38˚C (midday) Accommodation Camping Gorges Verdon (all geology within 3 hours walk) Land use Mixture of natural scrub, private grazing land, and artificial forest. Geological summary The Mesozoic carbonate sequence of Castellane, southeast France, records a transition from basinal (“Dauphinois”) pelagic facies in the north to platform (“Provençal”) neritic facies in the south; although this zone of transition is poorly studied and understood, despite excellent exposure and plentiful fossils.
