DATES TO REMEMBER MUCH ADO ABOUT BUNKERS October 20 Ron Kirkman Superintendent - Pro Tournament With apologies to Stratford Upon Avon's bard, a couple of Massachusetts Brae Burn C.C. courses have recently had'much to do about bunkers. Newtonville, MA At Worcester Country Club, Superintendent Mike Nagle was confronted by a set November 3 of bunkers in need of a good facelift. Grass faces had been over-edged, resulting in GCSANE Regular Meeting deteriorated sand faces and sand was contaminated with soil, discolored and firmly Presidents G.C. packed, with the resulting one-two punch being poor payability and aesthetics. Quincy, MA With the goal of restoring the rolling grass bunker faces characteristic of a December 6 course, Billy Drake was retained to clean the old sand out of 74 GCSANE Christmas Party bunkers with a backhoe. The "hoe" was equipped with a boom extension and Needham G.C. "wrist" that permitted the machine to clean an entire bunker from one position. With the old sand removed, Mike and his crew fine graded bunker banks and December 11-12 floors. Tile was required in only two bunkers and Mike used a geo-textile liner in GCSAA/RIGCSA Seminar the two pot bunkers in front of his tenth green. A preponderance of crushed stone Desease Identification* under these bunkers forced the use of the liner. Seekonk, MA Mike's Green Committee members did their homework as far as bunker sand * Please note corrected program selection was concerned. By visiting other courses, they were able to select a double April 7, 1987 washed brick sand that other area courses were using successfully. The bunker sand USGA Regional Conference was stockpiled in the lower parking lot adjacent to the clubhouse and moved out to the bunkers in small six wheel trucks. Use of a small bulldozer helped ease the sand Brookline, MA spreading process. Sand depths averaged eight to ten inches. Mike split the re-turfing around restored bunkers between seeding and sodding. Bunkers opened to rave reviews two months after the restoration process was completed, with free lifts being the rule prior to fully opening the new features. —NEXT MEETING— If he had it to do over again, Mike would have a contractor do all of the work and November 3, 1986 would have sodded, rather than seeded, all affected areas. The price per bunker was Meeting Presidents Golf Club a real bargain, coming in around SI 100.
