Southern Coast of Norway SOUTHERN COAST OF NORWAY Day 1: ARRIVAL OSLO Arrival to the airport of Oslo Gardermoen. Pick-up your rental car and drive to the centre of the city. We recommend a visit to the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park, the Viking Ship Museum where the best preserved Viking ships ever found are on display, the Fram Museum where the entire original Arctic exploration ship Fram is exhibited with its original interior and inventory, the Kon-tiki Museum which contains original vessels and objects from Thor Heyerdal’s many expeditions or one of the many other interesting sights in Oslo. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Oslo, centrally located Day 2: OSLO – KRISTIANSAND (325 KM) Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning, departure from Oslo and start your tour in the southern part of Norway, “The Norwegian Riviera”. This stretch of coast has more sunny days per year than anywhere else in the country, making it a holiday paradise for Norwegians. Drive via Larvik, an attractive port town, which has a fine maritime museum, and continue to Kristiansand. Southern Norway’s largest city is charming with weathered old homes and a pulsating summer atmosphere. The city was built by King Christian IV in 1641 in his characteristic chessboard layout featuring four town “quarters”. The centre of the town is an attractive mixture of historic attractions and relaxed seaside atmosphere. Kristiansand’s most popular attraction is Kristiansand Dyrepark, which contains five parks of different themes, including a zoo, a water park and Kardemomme By (Cardamom City, inspired by the children’s books of Norwegian author and illustrator Thorbjørn Egner). Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Kristiansand, centrally located Day 3: KRISTIANSAND – STAVANGER (270 KM) Breakfast at the hotel. Leave Kristiansand and drive to Mandal, 42 km south-west of Kristiansand. This is the southernmost town in Norway which is built on both sides of the Mandalselva River. The town has a country park of 100 hectares and two kilometres of sandy beaches within easy reach. The wooden church of Mandal, built in 1821 and Norway’s largest, is worth a visit. Continue to Stavanger, the cosmopolitan town of the Rogaland region and Norway’s 4th largest city. Visit the cathedral (the oldest cathedral in Norway) and Old Stavanger, where you will find Northern Europe’s biggest and best preserved concentration of wooden houses, more than 170 houses built at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Stavanger, centrally located Day 4: STAVANGER– REGIONS OF ROGALAND AND HARDANGER (295 KM) Breakfast at the hotel. Departure from Stavanger to explore the Rogaland region. Ferry Lauvvik- Oanes (not included-direct payment). Accessible from Stavanger is one of Norway’s most famous sights, Preikestolen (the Pulpit Rock/NB! We recommend for guests to be experienced hikers to go to Preikestolen!). Preikestolen is an amazing flat rock formation standing out above the Lys Fjord, whose sheer rock walls rise as high as one kilometre in places. Hiking up to the Preikestolen gives you an astonishing view of the Lys Fjord from 600 metres above sea level. The tour up takes approx. 2 hours, and is very steep, so don’t forget appropriate footwear and water! Continue towards the Hardanger region, and take the ferry Hjelmeland-Nesvik (not included-direct payment). Arrival to the romantic village of Rosendal, located by the fjord and home of the Rosendal Baronial Manor. Accommodation at the Rosendal Fjord Hotel or similar Day 5: ROSENDAL – BERGEN (119 KM) Breakfast at the hotel. In the morning departure from Rosendal and drive to Utne. Travel by ferry to Kvanndal (not included-direct payment) and continue to the old Hanseatic town of Bergen, capital of western Norway and gateway to the fjords. Drop off rental car at local office. We recommend a tour of Bergen. Visit the Fish and Flower Market, the old harbour of Bryggen, and the Hanseatic quarters. It is possible to take a ride on the funicular up to Mount Fløien to admire the magnificent views over the city and the surroundings. Accommodation at 3 star+ class hotel in Bergen, centrally located Day 6: BERGEN DEPARTURE Breakfast at the hotel. Check out from the hotel. Tip! – This tour can be combined with one of our many other tours, eg. the Norway or Sognefjord in a Nutshell? – Or perhaps the Fjords of the Norwegian West Coast program. Tour includes: • 5 nights’ accommodation including breakfast • Car rental 6 days (144 hours) airport Oslo/city Bergen, including one way fee** Please choose between the following categories of transmission o Cat C, type Ford Focus or similar, with manual transmission o Cat J, type Toyota Auris or similar, with automatic transmission .

  • THE GRANITIC ROCKS of FARSUND, SOUTH NORWAY INTRODUCTION the Present Study Is a Reappraisal of the Granitic Rocks Described As F
THE GRANITIC ROCKS OF FARSUND, SOUTH NORWAY ERIC MIDDLEMOST MIDDLEMOST, E.: The granitic rocks of Farsund, South Norway. Norsk Geo/. Tidsskr. 48, pp. 81-99. Oslo 1968. The farsundite is a composite granitic body that crops out over an area of some 420 sq. km. in southern Norway. On a local scale the contact between the farsundite and the surrounding country rocks is often discordant; but when observed on a regional scale a broad structural conformity emerges. Three main facies are found within the farsundite body and the mineralogy and chemistry of these units is discussed. The farsundite is regarded as part of the Rogaland anorthosite province. It was emplaced as a magma that was augmented in volume by the in corporation of granitic gneiss. The charnockitic part of the farsundite body is believed to have crystallized under granulite facies conditions at a timl! whenthe main mass of rocks of the Rogaland anorthosite province was cooling down. INTRODUCTION The present study is a reappraisal of the granitic rocks described as farsundite by Barth (in Holtedahl 1960, pp. 41-44). These rocks crop out over an area of approximately 420 sq.km. in south western Vest-Agder, the southern-most county in Norway. Most of the farsundite crops out on a series of peninsulas and islands that are separated from one another by an intricate pattern of fjords. The highest point in the area is at Klåskniben (504 m.) which is 3.5 km east of Orange. The landscape is generally rugged, and it shows consider able evidence of ice sculpturing.

  • North-Norwegian Literature - an Example of the Oppression of a Regional Culture
NILS M. KNUTSEN NORTH-NORWEGIAN LITERATURE - AN EXAMPLE OF THE OPPRESSION OF A REGIONAL CULTURE L Introduction Since there is no difference, ethnically speaking, 1 between people of Northern and Southern Norway, North-Norwegian literature is not a minority literature in the usual sense of the term. But economically and politically Northern Norway has had a very weak position within the country as a whole during the last 4-500 years. Consequently, the cultural life in the North has been almost completely subdued by the cultural life in the political and economic centers in the South~ Through these centuries there has never been an open conflict between the culture in the North and in the South. The situa- tion has rather been that of an undisputed Southern supremacy, accepted by both parts as something self-evident and "natural". Thus, North-Norwegian literature is not the expression of a subdued culture's heroic struggle against an overwhelming enemy. What the study of North-Norwegian literature does reveal, however - or more precisely, the study of the litera- ture about Northern Norway - are the problems caused by the dominance of a central, "official", "National" culture. Such problems or conflicts may be found in most countries. This article can only give a rough sketch of the development of these problems in Northern Norway. As an introduction it is necessary to include some historical information on the politi- cal, geographical and economical factors having determined the cultural development of Northern Norway. 1 The Lapps of Northern Norway is of course not included here. 188 NILS M.

Norway - Fjords and Mountains A once in a lifetime destination that will take you to mountains, glaciers, deep coastal fjords and the land of the Vikings and trolls... B = Breakfast, L = Lunch, D = Dinner Norwegians can’t get enough of nature and we’ve discovered why! Norway’s scenic landscapes are best discovered by following a path on foot. Late summer is the best time to experience a sunlit landscape that has forced the snow to retreat to the mountains and has woken the flowers to their full bloom. Long days, mild temperatures and the fabled midnight sun promise ideal walking conditions, and we will be surrounded with those vibrant natural colours of the changing landscape. We’ll discover untamed, mythical landscapes as we trapse the classic (and sometimes challenging) hiking trails of Preikestolen, Galdhøpiggen, and Besseggen Ridge. You’ll never forget your first approach aboard the Hurtigruten Ferry, to the unsurpassed beauty of the Lofoten Islands. Tall, craggy spires dominate the skyline and beckon walkers to their valleys and summits. We stay in hotels and mountain refuges, so there’s no camping on this trip. Norway - it’s a love affair with nature! Day 1: Monday Arrive Stavanger Airport (Sola) Arrive in Stavanger and make your way to our hotel in downtown Stavanger.

  • 2019-06B Southern Norway
Southern Norway th th 8 – 30 June 2019 Oslo, Bergen, Flam and Beyond Join us for a tour of Norway – a land of scenic and cultural wonders with so much to experience and enjoy. This tour will take you to the cities of Oslo and Bergen, to the pristine landscapes of Norway’s dramatic coastline and takes in many beautiful scenic drives en route. Get ready to be captivated by all the wonderful views and Fjords that make Norway such an attractive destination. The start of our tour is Hirsthals in the north of Denmark from where we take the ferry to Kristiansand, the largest city on Norway’s southern coast. It’s along this coast many Norwegians spend their Summer Holidays in the area of Grimstad, known for its lovely white painted wooden buildings, narrow streets and Arendal, which the film “Frozen” was based upon. If you are familiar with another film, ‘The Heroes of Telemark’ and its spectacular setting of Rjukan you will picture the location where we visit the Industrial Workers Museum and follow in the footsteps of the saboteurs. We spend time in Oslo – the capital of Norway. Oslo sitting at the head of Oslo-fjord is known as the city of green spaces, museums & sculpture parks. With the light nights of being this far north in summer (darkness will come around 11:30pm) there is plenty of time for exploring the outdoor areas of this wonderful capital. Bergen is Norway’s second city and another wonderfully picturesque area, surrounded by mountains and fjords, including Sognefjord, the country’s longest and deepest.
