Posen B.A., Physics & Astrophysics, University of New Mexico, 2013 B.M., Performance (Piano), University of New Mexico, 2013 ABSTRACT As a result of Leonard Bernstein’s numerous didactic lectures, he is generally recognized as a tonal composer who misrepresented or even misunderstood other compositional grammars. But, while scholars criticize Bernstein for these reasons, close analysis of his own music reveals a different story. Using post-tonal theory and semiotics, I examine Bernstein’s music from the perspective of compositional grammars—some not tonal—through analysis of three pieces from West Side Story (1957), “The Rumble,” the “Tonight” ensemble, and the “Cool Fugue.” I demonstrate that although Bernstein passionately defended tonality as the means to unite composers and audiences—especially Broadway audiences—analysis of West Side Story reveals varied musical syntaxes, including particular intervallic structures, pitch centric passages, and twelve-tone serialism. Analysis of West Side Story challenges illusory notions of supposed binary oppositions: opera versus Broadway, highbrow versus lowbrow, and tonal versus atonal. By closely interpreting how various compositional grammars in West Side Story blur supposed opposing binary musical aesthetics, genres, and styles, this thesis opens new and perhaps unexpected avenues     Michael Schnitzius Diatonic-Collection Disruption in the Melodic Material of Alban Berg‟s Op. 5, no. 2 The pre-serial Expressionist music of the early twentieth century composed by Arnold Schoenberg and his pupils, most notably Alban Berg and Anton Webern, has famously provoked many music-analytical dilemmas that have, themselves, spawned a wide array of new analytical approaches over the last hundred years. Schoenberg‟s own published contributions to the analytical understanding of this cryptic musical style are often vague, at best, and tend to describe musical effects without clearly explaining the means used to create them. His concept of “the emancipation of the dissonance” has become a well known musical idea, and, as Schoenberg describes the pre-serial music of his school, “a style based on [the premise of „the emancipation of the dissonance‟] treats dissonances like consonances and renounces a tonal center.”1 The free treatment of dissonance and the renunciation of a tonal center are musical effects that are simple to observe in the pre-serial music of Schoenberg, Berg, and Webern, and yet the specific means employed in this repertoire for avoiding the establishment of a perceived tonal center are difficult to describe. Both Allen Forte‟s “Pitch-Class Set Theory” and the more recent approach of Joseph Straus‟s “Atonal Voice Leading” provide excellently specific means of describing the relationships of segmented musical ideas with one another. However, the question remains: why are these segmented ideas the types of musical ideas that the composer wanted to use, and what role do they play in renouncing a tonal center?     WALLINGFORD RIEGGER: Romanza — Music for Orchestra Alfredo Antonini conducting the Orchestra of the “Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia-Roma” Dance Rhythms Alfredo Antonini conducting the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra THIS RELEASE is but further evidence of the growing and gratifying tendency of recent years to recognize Wallingford Riegger as one of the leading and most influential figures in twentieth century American composition, in fact as the dean of American composers. Herbert Elwell, music critic of the Cleveland Plain Dealer, said it in April, 1956: “I am coming more and more to the conclusion that it is Riegger who has been the real leader and pathfinder in contemporary American music . not only a master of his craft but in some ways a prophet and a seer.” In the same month, in Musical America, Robert Sabin wrote: “I firmly believe that his work will outlast that of many an American composer who has enjoyed far greater momentary fame.” Riegger was born in Albany, Georgia, on April 29, 1885. Both his parents were amateur musicians and were determined to encourage their children in musical study. When the family moved to New York in 1900, the young Wallingford was enrolled at the Institute of Musical Art where he studied the cello and composition. Graduating from there in 1907 Riegger then went to Germany to study at the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin with Max Bruch. In 1915-1916 he conducted opera in Würzburg and Königsberg and the following season he led the Blüthner Orchestra in Berlin. Since his return to the United States in 1917, he has been active in many phases of our musical life.

    Music Theory Spectrum Advance Access published September 18, 2015 Schoenberg’s Chordal Experimentalism Revealed through Representational Hierarchy Association (RHA), Contour Motives, and Binary State Switching This article considers the chronological flow of Schoenberg’s chordal atonal music, using melodic contour and other contextual features to prioritize some chordal events over others. These non- consecutive chords are tracked and compared for their coloristic contrasts, producing an unfolding akin to Klangfarbenmelodie, but paced more like a narrative trajectory in a drama. The dramatic pacing enhances discernment of nuance among atonal dissonant chords, thereby emancipating them from subordinate obscurity to vivid distinctness. Thus Schoenberg’s music is strategically configured to differentiate its own pitch material.     Reflection and Emergence: Celebrating 20 years of the Academy for the Love of Learning and Leonard Bernstein’s 100th 201 AUGUST 25 8 1 Copyright © 2018 Academy for the Love of Learning, Inc. © Kate Russell About the Academy 2018 marks both The Academy for the Love of Learning’s 20th anniversary and the centennial of the birth of the 20th century musical giant Leonard Bernstein. The Academy shares a deep history with Leonard Bernstein, and ultimately was birthed from an intense collaboration between Bernstein and Academy founder and President Aaron Stern during the fnal decade of Bernstein’s life. Stern, then Dean of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago, had a profound discovery about learning while observing how music students learned music. From that discovery, Stern recognized that a restoration of the human capacity to learn was essential not only to the revitalization of music, but all of education and more generally, Western culture itself. From this, Stern began to develop a body of work, pedagogy and learning methodologies that are now at the center of the Academy for the Love of Learning. Stern’s approach to learning found its counterpart in Bernstein’s vision for a better world and a lifelong commitment to sharing that vision through music. Stern’s clear conviction that by “taking the lid of learning, we can learn ourselves to a better world, individually and collectively” touched and inspired Bernstein deeply toward the end of his life. Bernstein invested in Stern enormously during that last decade of his life. Following Bernstein’s death in 1990, Stern developed further and implemented peripatetically the methodologies he frst began to explore while at the Conservatory.

  • Hexatonic Cycles
    CHAPTER Two H e x a t o n i c C y c l e s Chapter 1 proposed that triads could be related by voice leading, independently of roots, diatonic collections, and other central premises of classical theory. Th is chapter pursues that proposal, considering two triads to be closely related if they share two common tones and their remaining tones are separated by semitone. Motion between them thus involves a single unit of work. Positioning each triad beside its closest relations produces a preliminary map of the triadic universe. Th e map serves some analytical purposes, which are explored in this chapter. Because it is not fully connected, it will be supplemented with other relations developed in chapters 4 and 5. Th e simplicity of the model is a pedagogical advantage, as it presents a circum- scribed environment in which to develop some central concepts, terms, and modes of representation that are used throughout the book. Th e model highlights the central role of what is traditionally called the chromatic major-third relation, although that relation is theorized here without reference to harmonic roots. It draws attention to the contrary-motion property that is inherent in and exclusive to triadic pairs in that relation. Th at property, I argue, underlies the association of chromatic major-third relations with supernatural phenomena and altered states of consciousness in the early nineteenth century. Finally, the model is suffi cient to provide preliminary support for the central theoretical claim of this study: that the capacity for minimal voice leading between chords of a single type is a special property of consonant triads, resulting from their status as minimal perturbations of perfectly even augmented triads.
