After around 5.5 miles, turn right Carehouse Cross (Stokenham) signed East Prawle/ Beesands. After a further 2.75 miles, take the left hand fork at Dunstone Cross signed Kellaton/ Hallsands/ Start Point. After a further 1.25 miles, turn left at Hollowcombe Head, signed South Hallsands and then, almost immediately, right again, signed South Hallsands. Follow this road down the hill past Prospect House. Turn left on the brow of the hill and continue until the end of the road where there is a gravelled parking area. Situation The scenery that surrounds Chalfont Cottage is unparalleled, with panoramic and beautiful views towards Start Point, with its lighthouse, and towards Dartmouth the other way. Hallsands is a small village of only a handful of properties flanked by a site of special scientific interest, a veritable haven for wildlife and bird lovers. Lining the Eastern Coast of the South Hams, Start Bay has a magnificent coastline of interspersed long beaches and characterful fishing villages with colour-washed cottages, cafes, shops and old-fashioned country pubs. Of particular interest locally is the Slapton Ley and Line, a narrow strip of land, two miles long, separating the freshwater Ley and the English Channel. The South Devon coast path runs right in front of the cottage, and offers miles of glorious walks, with the highly- regarded Cricket Inn at Beesands a 20 min walk away. It is within easy reach of both Kingsbridge and Dartmouth and there are many beaches close by, including Lannacombe, Mattiscombe, Blackpool Sands and East Portlemouth, from where one can catch the ferry to Salcombe. The market town of Kingsbridge is at the head of the Salcombe estuarywith an excellent range of shops and local facilities including a health centre/ cottage hospital, an outstanding secondary school and a sportscentre. The sailing town of Salcombe, with its wonderful beaches and many shops and boutiques, is just 14 miles away. Steeped in history is Dartmouth on the River Dart with its worldfamous Royal Regatta and Naval College. The town offers interesting architecture and a dynamic range of modern and quirky shops, galleries and eateries. There are excellent schools in the area including Kingsbridge Community College which has an excellent reputation. Dartmouth, famous for its historic port and boating amenities,is also home to the Britannia Royal Naval College. The town has excellent facilities for sailing, with deep water moorings, three marinas and a number of boat yards.
