Like many other townships, it was created during the apartheid era as a dormitory area for the non-white working class. Today residents continue to face challenges such as HIV/AIDS and poverty in post-apartheid South Africa. Our next stop is the Iliso Care Society, to meet Vivian Zilo and learn about her community and the work she does within it. Soliciting the help of four other women, she began providing services to her community in June 2005. The Iliso Care Society’s main objectives are to fight poverty, encourage community empowerment, organise youth workshops and provide safety and care for orphans, vulnerable children, the elderly and school children. Today, Vivian brings New Hope to the people of Khayelitsha.
