(M.S., Aerospace Engineering Sciences) Orbit Options for an Orion-Class Spacecraft Mission to a Near-Earth Object Thesis directed by Prof. Daniel Scheeres Based on the recommendations of the Augustine Commission, President Obama has pro- posed a vision for U.S. human spaceflight in the post-Shuttle era which includes a manned mission to a Near-Earth Object (NEO). A 2006-2007 study commissioned by the Constellation Program Advanced Projects Office investigated the feasibility of sending a crewed Orion spacecraft to a NEO using different combinations of elements from the latest launch system architecture at that time. The study found a number of suitable mission targets in the database of known NEOs, and pre- dicted that the number of candidate NEOs will continue to increase as more advanced observatories come online and execute more detailed surveys of the NEO population. -

NATURE | NEWS Rosetta craft makes historic comet rendezvous European Space Agency's comet-chasing mission arrives after 10-year journey. No one can deny that it was an epic trip. The European Space Agency's comet-chasing Rosetta spacecraft has arrived at its quarry, after launching more than a decade ago and travelling 6.4 billion kilometres through the Solar System. That makes it the first spacecraft to rendezvous with a comet, and takes the mission a step closer to its next, more ambitious goal of making the first ever soft landing on a comet. Speaking from mission control in Darmstadt, Germany, Matt Taylor, Rosetta project scientist for the European Space Agency (ESA), called the space mission “the sexiest there’s ever been”. Rosetta is now within 100 kilometres of its target, comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (or 67P for short), which in July was discovered to be shaped like a rubber duck. After a six-minute thruster burn, at 11:29 a.m. local time on 6 August, ESA scientists confirmed that Rosetta had moved into the same orbit around the Sun as the comet. Rosetta is now moving at a walking pace relative to the motion of 67P — though both are hurtling through space at 15 kilometres per second. Unlike NASA’s Deep Impact and Stardust craft, and ESA’s Giotto mission, which flew by their target comets at high speed, Rosetta will now stay with the comet, taking a ring-side seat as 67P approaches the Sun, and eventually swings around it in August 2015. -

The complete absence of national laboratories for standardizing radiation measurements and the lack of physics departments in most radiotherapy centres in Latin America warrant the setting up of one or more regional dosimetry facilities, the functions of which would be primarily to calibrate dosimeters; to provide local technical assistance by means of trained staff; to check radiation equipment and dosimeters; to arrange a dose-intercomparison service; and to co-operate with local personnel dosimetry services. To be most effective, this activity should be in the charge of local personnel, with some initial assistance in the form of equipment and experts provided by the Agency. Although the recommendations were presented to the IAEA as the or ganization responsible for the setting up of the panel, the participants re commended that the co-operation of the World Health Organization and the Pan-American Health Organization should be invited. It was also suggested that the panel report be circulated to public health authorities in the countries represented. MESSENGERS FROM OUTER SPACE Although no evidence has yet been confirmed of living beings reaching the earth from space, it has been estimated that hundreds of tons of solid matter arrive every day in the form of meteorites or cosmic dust particles. Much is destroyed by heat in the atmosphere but fragments recovered can give valuable information about what has been happening in the universe for billions of years. Some of the results of worldwide research on meteorites were given at a symposium in Vienna during August. During six days of discussions a total of 73 scientific papers was present ed and a special meeting was held for the purpose of improving international co-operation in the research. -

Today, most of Mars is as dry as a desert except for ice deposits in its polar regions. Where did the rest of the water go? Some of it disappeared into space. Water molecules, pummeled by particles of solar wind, broke apart into hydrogen and oxygen atoms, and those, especially the lighter hydrogen atoms, sped out of the atmosphere, lost to outer space. (Reuters) But most of the water, a new study concludes, went down, sucked into the red planet’s rocks. And there it remains, trapped within minerals and salts. Indeed, as much as 99% of the water that once flowed on Mars could still be there, the researchers estimated in a paper published this week in the journal Science. Data from the past two decades of robotic missions to Mars, including NASA ’s Curiosity rover and the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, showed a wide distribution of what geologists call hydrated minerals. “It became very, very clear that it was common and not rare to find evidence of water alteration,” said Bethany Ehlmann, a professor of planetary science at the California Institute of Technology and one of the authors of the paper. -

After the Science Capsule door was opened, numerous foils and samples were exposed to the various solar wind environments during periods including slow solar wind from the streamer belts, fast solar wind flows from coronal holes, and coronal mass ejections. The Survey and Examination of Eroded Returned Surfaces (SEERS) program led by NASA's Space Environments and Effects program had initiated access for the space materials community to the remaining Science Capsule hardware after the science samples had been removed for evaluation of materials exposure to the space environment. This presentation will describe the process used to generate a reference radiation Genesis Radiation Environment developed for the SEERS program for use by the materials science community in their analyses of the Genesis hardware. I. Introduction ASA's Space Environments and Effects (SEE) Program initiated the Surveying and Examination of Eroded N Returned Surfaces (SEERS) Initiative in 2003.
