DOCUMENT RESUME ED 435 403 IR 057 553 AUTHOR Halliday, Blane TITLE An Examination of Essential Popular Music Compact Disc Holdings at the Cleveland Public Library. PUB TYPE Dissertations/Theses (040) EDRS PRICE MF01/PC04 Plus Postage. DESCRIPTORS *Audiodisks; Discographies; *Library Collection Development; *Library Collections; *Optical Disks; *Popular Music; *Public Libraries; Research Libraries; Tables (Data) IDENTIFIERS *Cleveland Public Library OH ABSTRACT In the 1970s and early 1980s, a few library researchers and scholars made a case for the importance of public libraries' acquisition of popular music, particularly rock music sound recordings. Their arguments were based on the anticipated historical and cultural importance of obtaining and maintaining a collection of these materials. Little new research in this direction has been performed since then. The question arose as to what, if anything, has changed since this time. This question was answered by examining the compact disc holdings of the Cleveland Public Library, a major research-oriented facility. This examination was accomplished using three discographies of essential rock music titles, as well as recent "Billboard" Top 200 Album charts. The results indicated a strong orientation toward the acquisition of recent releases, with the "Billboard" charts showing the largest percentages of holdings for the system. Meanwhile, the holdings vis-a-vis the essential discographies ran directly opposite the "Billboard" holdings. This implies a program of short-term patron satisfaction by providing current "hits," while disregarding the long-term benefits of a collection based on demonstrated artistic relevance.

  • Parody As a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015
Parody as a Borrowing Practice in American Music, 1965–2015 A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory of the College-Conservatory of Music by John P. Thomerson BM, State University of New York at Fredonia, 2008 MM, University of Louisville, 2010 Committee Chair: bruce d. mcclung, PhD ABSTRACT Parody is the most commonly used structural borrowing technique in contemporary American vernacular music. This study investigates parody as a borrowing practice, as a type of humor, as an expression of ethnic identity, and as a response to intellectual trends during the final portion of the twentieth century. This interdisciplinary study blends musicology with humor studies, ethnic studies, and intellectual history, touching on issues ranging from reception history to musical meaning and cultural memory. As a structural borrowing technique, parody often creates incongruity—whether lyrical, stylistic, thematic, evocative, aesthetic, or functional—within a recognized musical style. Parodists combine these musical incongruities with other comic techniques and social conventions to create humor. Parodists also rely on pre-existing music to create, reinforce, and police ethnic boundaries, which function within a racialized discourse through which parodists often negotiate ethnic identities along a white-black binary. Despite parody’s ubiquity in vernacular music and notwithstanding the genre’s resonance with several key themes from the age of fracture, cultivated musicians have generally parody. The genre’s structural borrowing technique limited the identities musicians could perform through parodic borrowings. This study suggests several areas of musicological inquiry that could be enriched through engagement with parody, a genre that offers a vast and largely unexplored repertoire indicating how musical, racial, and cultural ideas can circulate in popular discourse.

  • Richie Spice Biography
Richie Spice Biography Most reggae fans became acquainted with Richie Spice in 2004 when his single “Earth A Run Red” began its ascent on the charts, first in Jamaica, then internationally, ultimately emerging as one of the years biggest hits despite being more than four years old! “Earth A Run Red” was originally featured on Spice’s debut album Universal released by the Cambridge, Massachusetts based label Heartbeat Re cords in 2000. At that time, Spice was a lone reggae soldier armed with an arsenal of well-crafted, lyrically uplifting tunes, but without supporting troops, he found it difficult to advance towards the professional frontline. “The songs were there but they weren’t getting any promotion,” Spice recalls, “and with just me going out there singing them, it was like one man against the world.” In early 2004 Spice signed with 5th Element, a Kingston based management company/record label and they began a vigorous promotional campaign for “Earth A Run Red” in Jamaica which resulted in the song’s steady rotation on the airwaves and in the dancehalls. A subsequent video (directed by Ras Kassa) brought even greater visibility to Spice’s career and it wasn’t long before he became one of the most sought after artists for stage shows across the island. Additional hit tunes including the ominous “Folly Living (Blood Again)”, the haunting “Ghetto Girl” and the resounding hymn to herb “Marijuana” were featured on Spice’s debut album for 5th Element Records “Spice In Your Life” which earned unanimous critical praise. The New York Times named “Spice In Your Life” one the best reggae releases of 2004; the Los Angeles Times broadened the accolades, citing it as one of the year’s ten best albums of any musical genre and in Jamaica, The Observer newspaper honored Spice as artist and vocalist of the year.

  • Lyrical Threat, Musical Poison: Vybz Kartel and Spice’S Ramping Shop
Image owned and published by Clovis Brown and the Jamaica Observer. Lyrical Threat, Musical Poison: Vybz Kartel and Spice’s Ramping Shop Zena Bibler | New York University Creeping beyond the boundaries of genre, geography, artistic license, and economic ownership, “Ramping Shop” is a most dangerous pathogen. Released in November 2008, the song hijacked the instrumental track from United States R&B recording artist Ne-Yo’s recent hit, “Miss Independent,” transforming it into a raunchy lyrical romp that details the heterosexual exploits of Vybz Kartel and Spice, two of dancehall’s most popular artists.1 Its danceable beat and explicit lyrics detailing hardcore sexual activity in plain and literal terms www.hemisphericinstitute.org | www.emisferica.org Phoca PDF situate it in a subgenre of dancehall music called “daggering” music. While “Ramping Shop” is certainly not unique in its lyrical content, it has been used as a pole around which to center discussions of obscenity and ownership, indexing the complicated and intersecting ways that dancehall has proved and continues to prove socially, artistically, financially, and geographically uncontainable. Dancehall music, movement, and lyrics are both prolific and symbiotic in nature. Riddims (recycled, usually electronically-produced instrumental tracks) provide the framework for songs, which both mimic and generate dance movements in a loop of interpenetration between movement, music, and thematic content.2 These riddims, which serve as the building blocks for most dancehall songs, are part of a tradition that began much earlier. Deejays as early as the 1950s used “toasting” as an artistic technique, adding their own style to songs by ska bands.
