Newark, DE: Juan de la Cuesta, 1999. xx + 258 pp. ISBN: 0-936388-83-8. Geoffrey L. Stagg is duly honored in this latest addition to the handsome “homenajes” series published by Juan de la Cuesta. The collection of essays edited by Ellen M. Anderson an d Amy R. Williamsen contains some truly excellent contributions to Golden Age studies across the board. As most readers of this journal probably know, Stagg’s research focuses on the Cervantine œuvre, and he served as an Associate Editor for Cervantes since the journal’s inception until the date of publication of this Festschrift in celebra- tion of his eighty-fifth birthday. However, the editors’ introduction makes quite clear the fact that Stagg is nothing less than a Renaissance man—trained in both arms and letters—and this diversity is reflected through the fine selection of scholars and articles that make up this academic accolade. In addition to sketching Stagg’s academic career in their introduction to this homage, the editors also bring to light the human touch of this humani- tarian. His diplomatic manner with his students, his very special relationship with his wife, and the couple’s generous dinner parties with colleagues and students all paint an intimate portrait that gives a sense of wholeness to this academic tribute. The volume itself is divided into fou r sections. The first section, titled “Comparative Contexts,” contains three essays that “contribute to the under- standing of Spanish Renaissance and Baroque works in the light of the classi- cal letters and the Elizabethan literature Stagg knows and loves so well” (xvii). -

EL ALMA QUE ALLÍ CANTA… ES EL ALMA DE SU ANDALUCÍA. LA PRESENCIA DE ANDALUCÍA EN LA OBRA DE FEDERICO GARCÍA LORCA Clara Eugenia Peragón López (Universidad de Córdoba) Resumen: La configuración de un itinerario andaluz a partir de la obra del poeta granadino Federico García Lorca revela una intensa y profunda relación con la ciudad de Granada. Sin embargo, analizando su producción como poeta, prosista y autor dramático podemos apreciar, aunque en menor medida, la importante presencia, no siempre explícita, de otras ciudades y paisajes andaluces que igualmente llegarán a convertirse en entidades poéticas. Por tanto, además de la ya mencionada, y con personalidad propia, irán desfilando por la obra lorquiana las grandes ciudades históricas consagradas tales como Sevilla y Córdoba, sin olvidar la presencia de Jaén, Málaga, Almería y Cádiz. Abstratc: The aim of the present paper is to analyze how the work of Federico García Lorca, both his prose and poetry and theater, shows a close and intense relationship between the author and Granada, although in his words we also can find the presence of other landscapes and places of Andalusia, such as Jaén, Málaga, Almería and Cádiz, beside the two great historic cities, Seville and Córdoba, which will become poetic entities. All rights reserved Multiperspectivism in the Novels of the Spanish Civil War Hans Lauge Hansen, Aarhus University Since the turn of the millennium, Spanish society has been engaged with an intense public and political debate about the Civil War and the post-war period. The number of publications has exploded within all genres, and narrative fiction clearly participates in the negotiation of the cultural memory of this period. Taking its point of departure in Todorov’s concept of restorative narratives, this article investigates whether contemporary Spanish novels continue a Manichaean division between ‘us’ and ‘them’, and whether it is possible to detect a difference in narrative patterns before and after the turn of the millennium. Keywords: cultural memory, Spanish Civil War, restorative narrative, multi- perspectivism, Spain. Since the turn of the millennium, Spain has witnessed a renewed public and political debate about Spain’s history in the twentieth century which has focused particularly on the memory of the Civil War of 1936–1939 and the immediate post-war period. The number of publications dedicated to this issue has exploded, not only in historiographic discourse, but within all genres, including novels, biography and autobiography.1 Through dialogue with other social discourses, narrative fiction clearly participates in the construction of the cultural memory of a given society. But what is the nature of this involvement? This article engages this question by examining the change in narrative perspective in the contemporary Spanish novel and by discussing the possible cultural and social impact of this change. -

Belton: To Hell with Christ!—the Gospel, According to Lazarillo: Parodia Sacra & Picaresque Signifying on the Novel as Genre (Under the direction of Jessica Lynn Wolfe) This thesis looks at an anonymously-authored work of early modern Spanish prose fiction, namely La vida de Lazarillo de Tormes, y de sus fortunas y adversidades (The Life of Lazarillo de Tormes: his Fortunes and Misfortunes). It makes the argument that Lazarillo, as a progenitor-text for the picaresque and novelistic traditions, initiates the use of intertextual signifying and the play of the parodic as an imaginative practice that will come to define twentieth century notions of the novel as a generic form with identifiable techniques. Major portions of this essay read parody as it functions within the text, both thematically and structurally; applying Bakhtinian notions of parodia sacra to discuss methodology, form and the construction of meaning within the work. iii ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS Throughout my work on this thesis, a number of people have been dedicated to providing support for its completion. Today, when the world seems to teeter on the edge of major religious conflict, this enlightened period when Muslims, Jews and Christians lived in relative Aamity serves as a powerful reminder of the achievements of co-existence or ‘conviviencia’. This was the time when the Zohar, the seminal kabbalistic work, was compiled by Moses de Leon. It was also the period of Ibn ‘Arabi, the Sheik Al-Akbar, the greatest of Sufi teachers, while further north in Majorca the Christian philosopher, Ramon Llull, developed a form of wisdom that drew from the deepest esoteric teachings of all three cultures. Join us on a quest for the beauty and spiritual philosophy of this largely forgotten age, a time when the magical city of Cordoba contained a library of scores of thousands of books while the largest collection elsewhere in Europe had no more than 400. The Islamic culture that conquered Spain went on to translate the works of the ancient Greek philosophers and was familiar with the secrets of alchemy. In this vibrant world, Kabbalists intermingled with Sufis, and streams of wisdom flowed into Spain from both the far East and the North. This sixth in the Open Center’s series of conferences on the Western Esoteric Tradition will take place in Granada, the evocative and beautiful city lying below the snowy Sierra Nevada that, alone on the Iberian Peninsula, remained under Muslim control until the fateful year of 1492. -

Transatlantic Study Abroad Program in Europe Alcalá de Henares (Madrid), Spain The Consortium for Transatlantic Studies and Scholarships The mission of the Consortium for Transatlantic Studies and Scholarship (CTSS) seeks to encourage and promote a transatlantic perspective by providing faculty and students with a unique multicultural environment in order to aid their personal, professional, and academic development. Furthermore, we encourage collaboration within the consortium and among the member institutions in the area of academics, research, sharing of resources, and development of new programs, at all levels of the college/university: student, faculty, and administration. To that end, the CTSS has established a Study Abroad Program in Alcalá, Spain, which is held during the Fall and Spring Semesters. An annual Conference--open to faculty and students alike--is held every two years as a way to promote research, dialogue, and discussion among "scholars from across the world and from across the arts, humanities, and social sciences, [on] the nature and changing traits of Global Challenges through the lens of the transatlantic perspective. Program objectives To promote the knowledge and understanding of the historical, cultural, political, economic and social relations of both sides of the Atlantic Ocean by offering a diversity of courses suited for students with different interests, which will contribute to develop ideas, discussion and debate on subjects important to the transatlantic community. Lecturas de Emilio Prados Tatiana AGUILAR-ÁLVAREZ BAY Instituto de Investigaciones Filológicas, UNAM [email protected] En este trabajo presento algunas conclusiones sobre el material que he reunido con vis- tas a la edición de una “Antología” de materiales críticos sobre Emilio Prados (1889-1962). Al desarrollar este proyecto me propuse agrupar artículos publicados entre 1926, cuando aparece la primera reseña sobre Tiempo, y 1962, año en que muere el autor. Con base en este conjunto señalo las líneas críticas más destacadas, deteniéndome en los artículos que subrayan la radicalidad de las aspiraciones políticas, místicas y de exploración verbal del po- eta. La citada “Antología” está dividida en dos secciones, la primera reúne material crítico diverso –reseñas, notas, capítulos de libro–, y la segunda retratos del poeta escritos en su mayor parte por otros poetas. Dentro de este conjunto en ocasiones se superponen el co- mentario crítico y el apunte biográfico, pues la revisión de algún libro o aspecto poético da lugar al recuerdo personal o, a la inversa, al hilo del recuerdo personal se insertan valora- ciones sobre la obra. Ordenados cronológicamente, los artículos de la primera sección cu- bren distintas fases del autor, que reviso brevemente para dar una idea de la recepción de su obra en momentos diversos. El poeta Emilio Prados se apropia de una conciencia y de un lenguaje que le permiten expresar claves recibidas, que considera arcanas y casi intransmisibles. Desde esta perspecti- va su búsqueda se asemeja a la de corrientes radicales de pensamiento, como algunas for- mas de la vanguardia y el surrealismo, y explica su inicial adhesión a la actividad política1. -

Appendix B: A Literary Heritage I. Suggested Authors, Illustrators, and Works from the Ancient World to the Late Twentieth Century All American students should acquire knowledge of a range of literary works reflecting a common literary heritage that goes back thousands of years to the ancient world. In addition, all students should become familiar with some of the outstanding works in the rich body of literature that is their particular heritage in the English- speaking world, which includes the first literature in the world created just for children, whose authors viewed childhood as a special period in life. The suggestions below constitute a core list of those authors, illustrators, or works that comprise the literary and intellectual capital drawn on by those in this country or elsewhere who write in English, whether for novels, poems, nonfiction, newspapers, or public speeches. The next section of this document contains a second list of suggested contemporary authors and illustrators—including the many excellent writers and illustrators of children’s books of recent years—and highlights authors and works from around the world. In planning a curriculum, it is important to balance depth with breadth. As teachers in schools and districts work with this curriculum Framework to develop literature units, they will often combine literary and informational works from the two lists into thematic units. Exemplary curriculum is always evolving—we urge districts to take initiative to create programs meeting the needs of their students. The lists of suggested authors, illustrators, and works are organized by grade clusters: pre-K–2, 3–4, 5–8, and 9– 12. -
