THE SEARCH The Loomis Chaffee School seeks a Chief Financial Officer who will oversee all the finance and business operations of the school and will serve as a member of the Head of School’s senior staff—the leadership team of the school. The Loomis Chaffee School is a highly selective, coeducational, college-preparatory, located on a 300-acre campus in historic Windsor, Conn. Chartered in 1874 by five siblings who had outlived all of their children, the school embodies their democratic and inclusive vision enrolling 650 students from around the country and around the world. In the classroom, on the playing fields, or onstage, Loomis Chaffee’s students experience a challenging and transformative education in a community that cares about each individual. Thirty-three percent of the students receive financial aid. Notable alumni include Winthrop Rockefeller III ’31, ’63, George P. Shultz ’38, and Jason Wu ’01. The school will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2014.

In July 2008, the Loomis Chaffee Trustees appointed Sheila Culbert as the seventh Head of School. Prior to coming to Loomis, Culbert served as Chief of Staff to the president of Dartmouth College as well interim vice president for Communications. Throughout her time at Dartmouth, she also taught in the History Department. Earlier in her career, Culbert taught at .

Loomis Chaffee has 280 faculty and staff and an operating budget of $38 million. The school’s endowment has posted one of the best returns over the past 10 years among its peer schools and currently stands at $190 million. Loomis Chaffee recently announced a $10 million financial aid initiative, which it kicked off with a $3.3 million gift from an anonymous donor. In the past year, the school has opened two completely renovated state-of-the-art facilities: the Hubbard Music Center and Chaffee Hall and the Clark Center for Science & Mathematics. Other priorities include faculty salaries and support as well as the creation of a Center for Teaching and Learning.

Loomis Chaffee is currently in the midst of a number of planning efforts including a curriculum review, the development of a campus master plan, and preparations for a capital campaign, while also preparing for its decennial NEASC reaccreditation. The school expects the planning to culminate in a strategic plan that will establish its priorities and goals for the next 10 years and that will form the basis for a case statement for its Centenary Campaign.

1 The Chief Financial Officer must bring the ability to lead business and financial planning in a consultative manner. S/he must forge trusting relationships with faculty, staff, trustees, parents, and students and embody the integrity, accessibility, transparency, and high standards of excellence consistent with Loomis Chaffee’s values. An ideal candidate will bring significant experience in budgeting and planning, financial analysis, accounting, operations, and human resources management, and will have a minimum of 10 years financial experience, preferably in an education-related environment. S/he will also bring significant senior administrative leadership experience. A master’s degree in finance, accounting, or business is preferred.

CHIEF FINANCIAL OFFICER The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) reports to the Head of School and to the Trustees and is responsible for the school’s finances and business operations. S/he oversees approximately 70 staff in three departments: Business Office (6 staff), Information Technology (7), and Physical Plant (60), in addition to managing the school’s contract with ARAMARK Dining Services. The CFO also staffs the Trustee committees on Finance, Investment, Salaries & Benefits, Buildings & Grounds, and Audit. Additionally, the CFO serves in a leadership capacity for the school as a member of the Head of School’s Staff and various faculty and staff committees. The Chief Financial Officer oversees a complex financial and business operation and needs to have a demonstrated broad range of experience and sound technical skills. The core responsibilities for the Chief Financial Officer include:

Financial • Oversee the creation, administration, and reporting of the operating and capital budgets to the Head of School and the Trustees.

• Oversee financial planning, analysis, operation, and compliance.

• Consult and work with the Head of School and Trustees on other financial issues.

• Liaise with the school’s investment partners and communicate between them and the Trustees.

• Work with the Investment Committee to implement their decisions regarding the school’s investments.

Operations • Oversees the management of the physical plant including all renovations and construction projects. Is responsible for the continued maintenance of the campus.

• Approve the departments’ long-term operating plans and human and financial resource needs.

• Coordinate and communicate the departments’ activities with other departments whenever appropriate.

• Assure compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations and statutes.

• Oversee the school’s relationship with ARAMARK Dining Services.

Overall • Provide strategic counsel, supported with clearly communicated data and analysis, needed for continuous institutional planning.

• Staff the five Trustee committees: Finance, Investment, Salaries & Benefits, Buildings & Grounds, and Audit.

• Coordinate the development of a long-term campus master plan.

• Work with colleagues to identify areas in which greater coordination or collaboration can improve the quality or cost-effectiveness of operations, services, or administrative support.

• Develop, motivate, and lead finance and operations staff effectively. Commit to the professional development of staff, set clear expectations in order to ensure the highest level of staff performance, and delegate appropriately.

• Establish and maintain excellent working relationships with the Head of School, the Trustees, and others on the leadership team.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE The ideal candidate for the Chief Financial Officer will be a seasoned financial and operational professional with a collaborative leadership style. Experience and core expertise in budget planning, control, and presentation are essential. Candidates must be committed to the educational mission of Loomis Chaffee and be able to communicate effectively with constituencies inside and outside of the school. The role will require a leader with the highest ethical standards who is able to manage effectively in a complex organization and has a personal style that inspires confidence and respect. The successful candidate will embody the following qualities:

Professional Experience

• A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible financial management experience, preferably in an education-related organization.

• Human resource management experience.

• Demonstrated strong analytic and technical skills. Facility with budgeting, financial analysis, and reporting, particularly in a not-for-profit setting.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills. Experience conveying technically complex information and concepts in accessible terms.

• Experience developing short- and long-term financial and business strategies.

• Knowledge of endowment and investment management.

3 • Experience in the use and management of technology systems with experience overseeing systems implementations and/or upgrades.

• A master’s degree in finance, accounting, or business is preferred.

LOCATION AND COMPENSATION Loomis Chaffee is conveniently located in Windsor, Connecticut, close to the state capital Hartford and approximately 2 hours from both New York and Boston.
