  • The Gendered Voice of Australian Country Music
2011 © Graeme Smith, Context 35/36 (2010/2011): 27–38. The Gendered Voice of Australian Country Music Graeme Smith How do Australian country music singers sing, and why do they sing as they do? In his 1987 article ‘Why do songs have words,’ Simon Frith stresses that the words of a song constitute a very small part of the meaning of the musical act.1 The ‘voice’ of the singer, understood both as the sound produced and the discursive position that the singer occupies, is a complex vehicle for meaning, acting within musical, historical, stylistic and linguistic fields. As Australian country music emerged as a genre in the 1930s and 1940s, Australian singers produced versions of the musical styles of American performers like Jimmie Rodgers, the Carter family and others. Australian performers soon developed ways of performing localism within the music style. The genre has made persistent claims to be Australia’s authentic music and the true representation of Australian experience and national identity.2 For its practitioners and fans, Australian country music has become a voice of the nation. The national ideological and musical position occupied by Australian country music is not an unusual one. Many popular music genres around the world create in similar ways local mixes of nostalgia, nationalism, regionalism, address to rural and working-class audiences, and social conservatism. American ethnomusicologists Aaron Fox and Christine Yano have sketched out a field called Global Country, within which we might comfortably also include 1 Simon Frith, ‘Why do Songs have Words?’ Lost in Music: Culture, Style and the Musical Event, ed.

All correspondence addressed to: Telephone: (07) 4746 1202 The Chief Executive Officer Facsimile: (07) 4746 1272 17 Herbert Street BEDOURIE QLD 4829 www.diamantina.qld.gov.au MEDIA RELEASE Australian music legend to perform on top of Big Red Much loved Australian music icon John Williamson will kick start the first ever Big Red Run charity race with a special sunset concert atop of the Diamantina Shire’s 40-metre high Big Red sand dune on Monday, July 8. The songwriter who has penned Australian classics such as “True Blue”, “Cootamundra Wattle”, “Rip Rip Woodchip” and “Big Red”, will fire up an estimated crowd of more than 700 people to help celebrate the start of the six day, 250km stage race. Diamantina Shire Council Mayor, Cr Geoff Morton, said it was a real coup to secure such a well-known and respected singer to open the event. He said: “John Williamson has a real connection to the Australian bush and Australian’s through songs like Mallee Boy about eradicating rabbits and Diamantina Drover about the droughts and the hardship of the early drovers. I encourage everyone far and wide to take advantage of this once in a lifetime chance to enjoy John Williamson in the environment he so passionately tell stories about in song.” Based out of Birdsville from Monday, July 8 to Saturday, July 13, 2013 the Big Red Run has attracted participants from as far away as Singapore, Germany, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. Officially kicking off outside the Birdsville Hotel at 7am on Monday morning, the race will give runners and walkers the chance to tackle the famous red sands of the Simpson Desert, participating in either the Big Red Run, a 250km six day stage race, the Born to Run 100km or the Big Red Dash 42km.
