Vol.LXXXIVNo.2l Storrs, Connecticut Thursday, September 25,1980 Senate agrees to sell nuclear fuel to India WASHINGTON (UPI) - President Carter won a major foreign policy victory Wednesday when the Senate, which he lobbied intensely over the past few days, narrowly rejected a House-passed resolution to block the sale of nuclear fuels to India. Since disapproval by both houses was needed to prevent the controversial sale, the Senate's 48-46 vote against the resolution cleared the way for it to go ahead. The House had voted against the sale last Thursday, 298-98. The close vote in the Senate reflected deep differences on the issue, centering partly on India's stormy relations with the United States. The White House welcomed the outcome, saying in a statement it will further the administration's "policy of seeking to prevent nuclear proliferation and adds support to our discussions with the government of India toward bringing all of that nation's nuclear facilities under international The sprawling oil refineries at Abadan in Iran have been bombed by the Iraqi Air Force. safeguards."
