Labour Housing Group Newsletter - November 2020 SOCIALIST HOUSING POLICIES FOR A RECOVERING BRITAIN Making a reality of a decent home for all When it looked as if would be no Annual Labour Party Conference in 2020, LHG agreed with Thangam Debbonaire that we would hold a small conference just about housing. We knew there would be a lot of interest – at Annual Conference in 2019, there were more fringe meetings and resolutions about housing and homelessness than even the NHS. Our two key themes were how to win the next General Election through progressive housing policies and how to help the recovery from Covid-19. Our keynote speakers were Thangam Debbonaire, Shadow Secretary of State for Housing, who focused on the failings of the Tory Government on housing before and during the current crisis and housing policies to address climate change. This Assembly re-affirms its call that the UK Government must do more to ensure that innocent leaseholders do not pay the costs related to the building safety crisis and that all buildings impacted by the scandal can have remediation work completed as soon as possible. No child should attend school too hungry to learn, or struggle to concentrate because their family is unable to afford a healthy lunch. Last year, the high degree of public support for Free School Meals was demonstrated by Marcus Rashford’s powerful advocacy, alongside widespread local action and community groups. The Government also acknowledged the importance of ensuring children get at least one guaranteed meal a day, when it extended FSM during the school holidays last year. However, at least 1.7 million children and young people in families in receipt of Universal Credit miss out on this vital support all year round. We are calling on you to expand FSM provision eligibility to include these children. Coronavirus is having a far greater impact on the lives and educational experiences of children from disadvantaged and low-income families. There is significant financial pressure on thousands of families, some of whom are existing on as little as £20.27 a day. You have emphasised your Government’s determination to ‘level up’. Reshaping FSM provision to include children growing up in families in receipt of Universal Credit will provide an additional 1.7 million children with what they need to learn, thrive and achieve their full potential.
